This series is like cozy mystery meets young adult. I don't read a lot of young adult novels, but I'll be reading every book of this series because I love the characters and living in this world for a moment.

I LOVED the first book of this series, and book two doesn't disappoint! They are all wonderfully witty and packed with Victorian history (but not in a tiresome way). I can't wait to read about the further adventures of this young detective and her governess.

I am a huge mystery fan. Like Mrs Bunce, I grew up on Trixie Belden. I read every mystery I could get my hands on.

I requested both Myrtle books from Netgalley, mostly because I LOVED Star-crossed and Liar’s Moon (READ them!). I really enjoyed both books, though if you are a young adult or adult reader, this is decidedly middle grades. As a connoisseur of young adult kit, I am already dreaming of Myrtle marrying Mr. Blake year when she grows up. His humor, competence, and devotion make him my very favorite character, although Peony (the cat), with her hilarious interjections, is a close second.

I was more fascinated on the mystery than the first. I am a sucker for a train story. But I missed Myrtle’s dad, and I was frustrated with Miss Judson for being far less encouraging and sympathetic than she was in the first book. I did peg the bad guy based on his or her extremely suspicious behavior, but I may not have done so if I had been a 12 year old, for whom this book is intended. The ending implies that the next release will be a Christmas mystery, which makes me super excited to see what happens next! More twisty suspense, Mr. Blakeney, and Peony please!!!

How to Get Away with Myrtle by Elizabeth C. Bunce

Summary
Myrtle Hardcastle is a vibrant young girl who always seems to be on a quest for answers, and there always seems to be an adult that wants her to act like a proper young lady in her way. When this second installment begins, Myrtle is left in the care of her aunt Helena and her usual companion Miss Judson. Quickly reader’s find themselves immersed in jewel theft, murder, and so much more.

Thoughts
I was able to read the first book in this series through another NetGalley ARC and I fell in love with Myrtle’s tenacious spirit so I was excited to request the second book in the series.

One thing that Bunce does quite well is dialogue. Conversations feel very natural for this time period and for an especially intelligent twelve year old girl. Another thing that Bunce excels at is character development. Many small character parts are necessary for the plot to move forward, but Bunce makes it easy for readers to distinguish one character from the next.

I also have great respect for those who write mysteries. Keeping all of the details straight is not an easy task, and Bunce brings them all together in the end.

Target Audience
This is a great book for young girls who enjoy reading adventure tales, tales about girls who don’t let the fact that they are a girl get in their way of achieving their goals.

Conclusion
I would recommend this book to just about anyone. I know plenty of adults that still read children’s chapter books partially because they remind them of their childhood. Even though this is newer fiction, I know that adult readers will fall in love with Myrtle.

In this second book starring Myrtle Hardcastle, 12-year-old detective, less time is spent introducing the series' characters and more time setting up a rollicking good mystery. Lots of local color and quirky suspects add to the twists and turns of the plot. Sure to become a new favorite series for middle grade mystery lovers. Highly recommended.

Review based on an ARC provided the NetGalley.
