I’ve always been intrigued with the history of the British Royals and this book didn’t disappoint. The author did a wonderful job of research and tie historical events into a great story. Thank you to Henry Holt and NetGalley for a gifted copy. This is my honest review.

Hilary Mantel’s brilliant writing immediately immerses the reader into 16th century Tudor England. She follows the brilliant mind of Thomas Cromwell from his humble beginnings as the son of a blacksmith to becoming dealmaker, strategist, and advisor to the King of England. Through Cromwell, this book comes to life. During this tumultuous time of political upheaval, religious freedom and women’s rights are explored in the connections of Cromwell.

Mantel doesn’t dumb it down, but assumes you can keep up with the history as Cromwell moves through it. The telling is is smart and contemporary, beautifully layered and multifaceted, making this part of history feel not so very long ago.
