I truly enjoyed this book as an adult. I'm not sure what the best way to use this in the classroom would be. I could see having some students use it as a mentor text for memoir writing or to include in the Family & Consumer Science Room as a way to help students find themselves in the kitchen.

Always Home by Fanny Singer is a little bit memoir, a little bit cookbook. Singer is the daughter of chef Alice Waters. The book is an homage to Singer’s mother. She shares brief stories from their lives as well as recipes that fit the narrative.

Most of the recipes are written within the text of her vignettes, which make them a little tougher to follow than a standard form. I had to reread the strawberry gelato “recipe” three times, and I still don’t understand where the remainder of the pound of hulled strawberries are used.

Fanny Singer’s strong bond with her mother, legendary food pioneer Alice Waters, is displayed on each page. This is Singer’s first book on her own. She previously wrote a book titled My Pantry with her mother.

My review will be posted on Goodreads starting August 29, 2020.

I would like to thank Penguin Random House Canada and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in return for an objective review.

It was such a delight to read Fanny Singer's lush, evocative book, especially in the current circumstances--such a good reminder of the beauty and pleasure to be had from food, but also art, writing, music, travel. Will highly recommend.

I know of Alice Waters but I'd never know of Fanny Singer. So I'm doubly glad I picked up this book. I met a new chef and learned what growing up with talented chefs was like. Ifs funny and loving and, of course, filled with wonderful food.

Following on the theme of #books for #mothersday2020, #alwayshome, is a dual #memoir #cookbook, written by @fannysinger as a tribute to her mom, the incredible @alicelouisewaters, of @chezpanisse, but also #theedibleschoolyardproject, and so much more.

Mother and daughter are holed up “at home”, in #Berkeley #California, unable to tour and promote their book.
Fortunately for me, I’ve gotten to virtually/ digitally see the duo twice, thanks to @zibbyowens and the @miamibookfair. I was also fortunate to get a copy of the book through #netgalley (and listened to it on @audible_ca), which tells you how much I love 💕 this amazing mother daughter story and book.

If your mom is more into #memoir then #fiction, and appreciates #books, I confidently recommend #alwayshome by @fannysinger. Thank you #netgalley for the e-arc, in exchange for my honest review. NB: Fanny & Alice have recently renamed the recipe #cominghomepasta to #alwayshomepasta thanks to #covid19.
