I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed are my own.

I'm generally fairly annoyed when I see gendered books, but this one is important. (And also applicable to people other than "girls," though you might have a hard time getting some of them to read it.)

This book is really great. I love the sentiment behind all of it; now I just need to find the conviction to apply it. As someone who's been a "good girl" her whole life, I feel that pressure constantly. The need to please, the need to be strong. It sucks. This book does a fantastic job of breaking down why those stereotypes have been applied to women and how and why to go about re-evaluating them.

The only thing left is to "just say no"!

I should begin this review with the note that "enlightened" authors who claim to have it all together tend to get on my nerves... and I initially believed that Majo Molfino was going to be one of them. However, I was pleasantly surprised with her assessment of patriarchy and how it subtly and insidiously presses women into particular molds. There are exercises to identify and combat these influences in each chapter - and a mostly clear-eyed cry to transcend outdated models. I will say that much of the advice may sound familiar to readers who have looked into other self-help books (meditation, journaling) but Molfino has a style that is enjoyable to read and, in asking her readers to take a good clear look at some things we take for granted, her book may do some real good.
