I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. This is a fun and dark picture book for kids about facing your fears at night and for an added bonus it's a lift the flaps book.

Very dark illustrations in this one, which I think portrays the message of the story very well. I think a lot of children can relate to the story of being afraid of the dark. This has the message that we often see things that aren't there because of what we imagine.

I love the fact that this is a lift-the-flap book. The illustrations are beautifully done in dark tones and the monsters and fears assessed in this book are relatable.

As a kid who was afraid of everything I am so appreciative of books like this one. Having someone who loves us and helps us face our fears is so important and this book highlights not having to face our fears alone.

A sweet, engaging, and relatable story about dealing with nighttime fears. A young boy is afraid of different aspects of the dark, and goes to his older sister for help in vanquishing the night monster he fears. Instead of dismissing his fears, she has him first draw a picture of the monster and lock it in a box; when that doesn't work, she suggests writing the night monster a letter. The boy does this, and receives a response in the morning. The back and forth letters continue, with the monster explaining what the different things the boy doesn't like about it are, such as an owl hooting, until the boy is no longer afraid. The reader, of course, can guess that the sister is answering his letters, and I almost wonder if it wouldn't be better not to read this to kids, so parents/caregivers can use this method themselves! The story is a quicker method, though, and should open up discussion on what the child might be afraid of, and what the explanation might be. The artwork is lovely, starting off creepy while the boy is afraid of the dark, and more welcoming (but still dark) as the story progresses. Definitely recommended.

First off the book is dark and kind of scary. I LIKE it! This book won the Jarul Book Children’s Choice Award in India in 2017 and it so deserves it. It deserves some american awards too! A little boy is scared of the night. It keeps him up, it makes the curtains, move, etc. So his sister comes up with the idea to write the night monster and ask them to stop. Over many nights and many letters he learns to love the sweet dreams night brings him. This book has heart, it has a great story line, and a simple lesson. The illustrations are extremely well done and different from what most american picture books look like. I love everything about it, and think all libraries need to add it to their collection.

The Night Monster is about Avi getting help from his sister to overcome his nighttime fears. It's also about courage and of learning about what scares us so that they no longer do.

An interesting story about facing fear. I thought the approach was definitely an interesting one. The artwork was nice.

This is a beautiful little book which serves to show young readers not to fear the "monsters " of the night. The "monsters " are simply things like the wind blowing curtains or an owl outside the window . The illustrations are a little dark and mysterious ( maybe even a little creepy )yet they are extremely beautiful. I personally adore the cover art!

A small child is convinced to write letters to the things in the night that scare him. His living sister replies to each letter giving a name and a face to each one. The "monsters" in the night arent monsters at all but rather just normal animals, sounds and natural occurances.

I really enjoyed reading this simple and beautiful book to my sons at bedtime. If you have a small child who maybe struggles with fear of the dark this may be a book that helps them. You may even replicate the letters and write to the night yourselves.

Young Avi fears the titular Night Monster, but, when Avi turns to his older sister Swati, she helps him, although I don’t want to give away too much. Author Sushree Mishra unfurls a beautiful story about seeing something from someone else’s perspective, while illustrator Sanket Pethkar includes the dark, suggestive illustrations that let readers see things through Avi’s eyes as well.

The book is a treasure for young and old alike. And I truly hope we get to sister Swati again in a sequel.

In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley, Myrick Marketing & Media, and Karadi Tales Picturebooks in exchange for an honest review.

'The Night Monster' with story by Sushree Mishra and illustrations by Sanket Pethkar is about a little boy and the visitor he is afraid of.

Little Avi is brave enough during the day, but a monster he sees at night scares him. He confides in his sister Swati, and she gives him suggestions on how to make the monster go away. What follows is the story of a scared little boy and the older sibling who wants to help.

This was a really beautiful story, and I loved the illustrations. Told in soft colors of the earth and night, I loved the angles that some of the illustrations were given. The advice Avi gets is also good advice for little ones to defeat their own night monsters.

This is a very cute children's book. A young boy is scared of the night monster. His older sister has some suggestions to help. Soon the night becomes a peaceful, welcoming place.

My 3-year-old has been afraid at bedtime lately, and I am curious if this book would help her. On the other hand, while I love the (beautiful!) illustrations, I wonder if she would find them a bit dark and spooky. It's kind of a toss-up.

Regardless of my particular child's quirks, I think this is a great book.

I adore how dark and creepy the illustrations are in this book. Sanket Pethkar, illustrator, has done a wonderful job of making the pages feel like the shadows and curtains are moving. I felt like I would hear the owl hooting as Sushree Mishra, writer, talks about why the night is the way it is.
This is a clever little story in which a little boy 'talks', via letters, to what he believes to be the night monster. Through these letters our boy realizes it's not the night that is scary necessarily; but all the things that happen at night combined together. Of course there is no actual night monster to write back and instead the boy's older sister is writing the letters that are found in a locked box each morning.
I love that The Night Monster touches on a simple, yet very true concept, that darkness is scary to us humans. You can try to deny it but at some point in our lives we've all been afraid of darkness. Whether that be at night, a darkness in our heads or hearts. And so it's good to remind ourselves of what that darkness actually is. Reactions to individual stimuli. I think the psychology here has a lot of depth and I love how a simple children's book is able to dispel a fear of the dark so simply.
I am definitely going to get this book if I see it in the wild and add it to the collection as I can imagine gifting it to a child who is struggling to sleep because of fear.

This is a moody, sweet picture book about a child afraid of the dark and of monsters, and his big sister who helps him write letters to the dark and learn not to fear it. The dark writes back, explaining all that he does (that sound is not to scare you but an owl, and so on). The child eventually learns not to fear the night and to care for it. The illustrations are beautiful but a tiny bit spooky, and some kids may not be comforted by the book because of the tone of the art. It's a lovely book for those who can embrace the message.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.

What a fantastic concept for a book and suggestion for kids to deal with fears. Was not a huge fan of the artwork, but it was fine and worth the read for the story.

A big thank you to NetGalley and Myrick Marketing and Media LLC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is a children's book. I have been having issues for about a month with children's books. The formatting on my kindle is just messed up. Not sure whose fault this is, but it is beyond frustrating. How can you review something you can barely see? So with that said, I am not sure if I missed it or it isn't stated, but who the heck is Swati? Is this the monster? I thought the concept was cool of drawing your fear and locking it away! I liked what graphics I saw. This was tough for me to rate star wise, because of formatting issues and every other page was blank. 2.5 stars but take this with a grain of salt.

The Night Monster by Sushree Mishra and illustrated by Sanket Pethkar is, without a doubt, one of the most brilliant children's books I've ever read. In truth, I don't quite know what age group I would recommend it to as there is a level of deceit to the story, but ultimately I think it is one of the more beautiful book's I've had the pleasure to come across. It is all down to the relationship between the young girl and her little brother.

The Night Monster tells the story of a young boy, Avi, who is afraid of the dark and his caring sister who helps him overcome his fears. Each night he struggles to sleep, certain that there is a monster outside preparing to attack. He voices his fears and worries to his elder sister and she proceeds to give him advice.

First, she tells him to draw the monster and lock the monster away in the box. Soon begins a letter correspondence between Avi and the monster about all the things the monster does that scares him. The monster, in turn, tells Avi that it is merely the night and is not trying to scare him at all. And eventually, young Avi learns to no longer fear the night.

The illustrations in this book are gorgeous throughout, at times mimicking the dark and scary nature in which Avi sees the night. Avi and his sister are beautifully depicted and adorable. While it is not bright and colorful, the artwork is still quite engaging, though perhaps for an older child rather than a young one.

All in all, The Night Monster is a book I absolutely adored and one that I would be happy to recommend to many.

This was a beautifully illustrated children's book that tells a story of a young boy who is afraid of the monster's in the night. After taking his sister's advice and writing letters to the monster, the monster responds with calm reasoning as to why they are just the night, and not monsters at all.

I really really loved the illustration style of this book, and I found the story of the brother and his sister to be heartwarming and genuine.

A cute and short story with solid illustrations. The "twist" or reveal at the end was a bit confusing in the context of the supposed audience.
