Thank you Netgalley for letting me read and review this book. "After his snowmobile breaks down halfway across the sea ice on a trip back from a fishing camp, Serapio Ittusardjuat recounts the traditional skills and knowledge he leaned on to stay alive. This harrowing first-person account of four nights spent on the open sea ice—with few supplies and no water—shows young readers the determination and strength necessary to survive in the harsh Arctic climate, even when the worst occurs."

This is a short graphic novel, at only 48 pages. I enjoyed this story and liked learning about the traditional skills Serapio had to use to survive in the Artic.

I didn't get to read this one fully before I lost the copy but I loved the art. I'm all about graphic novels that tell complex stories so I will definitely go check this out soon so I can finish it!

This short graphic novel flew by much quicker than I had expected! It’s essentially a short story utilizing the graphic novel format to share the author’s story of survival. The story is built on a foundation of traditional knowledge that he grew up learning and how vital it was to his survival. It underscores the importance of not forgetting and to continue to pass on what we know. The illustrations themself were also really beautiful and added a lot to painting a picture of how harrowing the situation was. I definitely recommend if you’re looking for a middle grade read for your kid, classroom, or just for your own collection!

An interesting and easy read about an Inuit man stranded for four nights without food or water in the ice.

This is technically a children's book, which is why it's so short, but I felt that that put it in a strange halfway zone-- it can't be too long, or kids won't stay engaged, but the length makes it feel unfinished. I'm just certain that there had to have been more to say about being stranded for four days without food or water.

There's one small segment on how he managed to get water from the ice (twice--in four days!), and I'm not going to sit here and act like Ittusardjuat ought to have fictionalized his actual life story into some kind of Hatchet-esque Daring Tale Of Intrepid Creativity, but overall I wanted more. Effects of lack of food, or what he thought of, or even what he dreamed about.

It's not a bad book, though, and it's a solid starting point. I'm not disappointed I read it, and that's a very small critique in the grand scheme of things-- after all, better to have too short a book than too long of one. Hoping to read more from this author.

I think kids who love the I survived books or who may not be able to read those yet, may really enjoy this title. This is quick read and one where you hope your main character is okay! Love the back matter.

This was a very quick read. I wish there had been more to the story. I appreciated the glossary of terms at the back of the book.

Great, short graphic novel about a man who gets stuck in Arctic sea ice when his snowmobile breaks down. The book takes us through how the author survived four frigid nights.

The illustrations are beautiful, showing the vastness of the icy terrain.

Another thing I enjoyed is the exploration of indigenous survival techniques and the melding of these with modern materials such as gasoline and the snowmobile. In this way, the book illuminates the survival of indigenous cultures and counteracts stereotypes that indigenous cultures are static.

I wish the author had shared more of his internal experiences. The book skips over fear, loneliness, desperation, and other feelings someone trapped in the Arctic would likely feel. This was disappointing and made the book less powerful.

Overall, an enjoyable and informative book. Wish I could rate it 3 1/2 stars but I am rounding up to four.

This survival story has fairly good, cleanly drawn art but I found the storyline overly spare, slow, and boring. It has some appeal but a narrow one.

This is a very quick and intense read about a man's incredible story of survival.

Unfortunately, because the story is so short, the reader isn't given enough time to really appreciate what he went through - or the important lesson he shares at the end.

Thank you to the publisher and to Netgalley for the chance to read this beautifully illustrated story.

2.5

Serapio Ittusardjuat is on his regular trip from the back from the fishing camp with the unexpected happened. His snowmobile is broken and he is miles away from his home. Out in the cold Arctic winder, he must collect his hope and survive. This is a story about how he lasts four nights.

I really like the concept and the lesson it is trying to teach its readers but I think due it being so short it skims through a lot of it. We are shown his survival skills and told he was taugh by his elders but other than that we know little about it. The story flew by so quickly that I didn't have time to fear for him, to really see him struggle to survive. I think that is key to a survival story. I enjoyed reading the novel but I didn't take much from it.

I think the art is done well in this book and complements the story.

Since its such a quick read, give it a chance.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinions.

This is a really short graphic novel about an Inuit man that gets stuck out on the ice when his snow machine breaks down. He survives four nights out there by using some tricks he'd learned as he grew up. The artwork, & text. is real good, & I think all ages would find this quite interesting....& well worth the short time it takes you to read it.
I received this e-book from Myrick Marketing & Media, LLC/Inhabit Media via NetGalley after offering to read it & post my own fair/honest review. These are my own opinions.

Hmmm this had so much potential - how does one survive on the open ice for four whole days?? But it was less than 50 pages long, and with very few words at that, so it really skimmed the surface of the story. I mean, I still don’t understand how he survived. For starters, the whole moral of the story was that lessons taught in childhood can be life-saving late in life (which is a great moral for kids!) so I would have loved more background on his upbringing. Instead we got 2 panels. Then, it could’ve done with some more suspense building - start with childhood stories that you don’t know are going to be important, then get into the main story of his leaving home, add much more detail into the timeline so we understand better the passage of time, and add more details in general like the temperatures, what and how much he ate - really draw the reader into the story so they understand the isolation and the gravity of his situation!

Ittusardjuat’s How I Survived Four Nights on the Ice serves as a good reminder about what to do when stranded in the wilderness as the short graphic novel is equipped with survival skills passed by indigenous people. Because of its simplistic overview of the survival skills and its short length (literally 26 pages on the computer), I think this graphic novel is best suited for young children. Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this eARC. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

How I Survived is about a man who tries to survive in the frozen wilderness for 4 days while traveling. He describes how he got drinking water, stayed warm and how he was finally rescued. Children who enjoy reading about survival and /or about Alaska may enjoy this book. The illustrations are simple; however, they do help with creating images for children so that they can visualize the events in the story better.

A fantastic short survival story about an Inuit man who gets stranded on the sea ice in the Canadian Arctic. Short and sweet, perfect for anyone who is fond of survival stories or interested in Arctic stories.

I always enjoy survival stories, though this was much shorter than I expected. The art style was not my favorite. Props to the author for surviving and writing his harrowing story.

While this book was interesting it was very short. I felt like I didn't get a sense of the main character at all, they could have literally been anyone. I just wasn't a fan of this really. It was to short and it didn't hold my interest.

A picture book of an indigenous person’s survival story. Short in length like a comic book. I learned how to make drinking water from a gas can.
