I wanted to enjoy this book much more than I did. I liked the characters but wish the plot had had more details.

Lizzie grew up in a tavern, shielded from the worst by her caring mother.
Jonas grew up in privilege, though without a father from a young age.
When their paths cross and they are unexpectedly presented with ways to help each other, new possibilities are opened for each of them.
The supporting characters are well written and fully developed.
A page turner from start to finish, with an unexpected twist that changes everything.

I found The Noble Smuggler to be a beautiful historical romance. I will most definitely be looking for more by Sian Ann Bessey in the future. Five stars.

The Noble Smuggler is a wonderful book. I loved that as a historical fiction the reader is transported out of the ballrooms and to the seaside where smuggling runs rampant. I appreciated the perspectives offered as to how and why people were involved in smuggling and how it was a means of survival for many. Lizzie longs to break free from her father and the smuggling gang and finds the means with the arrival of Jonas. Together they embark to expose the leader of the gang and the corruption that has tainted so many lives. Along the way there is mystery, intrigue and of course, clean romance. The storyline is well written and captivated me from start to finish. Highly recommended.

This is a suspenseful and romantic as adventure set in the year 1782 in England. The author did a wonderful job with the description of the setting, and I felt as if I had stepped into the village of Lower Tillbury and met these characters for the first time. Elizabeth (Lizzie) is grieving the loss of her mother and is enduring the mistreatment of her father as she works in his inn. Lord Langton is working undercover as a smuggler and is trying to bring to justice the smuggling ring that was responsible for his father’s death. Lizzie finds herself in danger, and it’s up to Lord Langton to find a way to help her and bring the violent smuggling ring to justice.

This book has a sweet romance; action and adventure; and a sometimes suspenseful storyline. There’s an unexpected turn in the plot that sets up an intriguing ending. I thought this book was very well written, and the characters were well defined.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Despite living at her father's inn her entire life, Elizabeth Doyle has always managed to avoid involvement with the smugglers who frequently gather there. Until now. When a handsome smuggler is brought to her with dire injuries, Elizabeth risks everything to hide him—completely unaware that the wounded man is not who he appears to be.
When an opportunity arises to infiltrate the notorious smuggling gang he believes caused his father's death, Jonas Ainsworth, the Viscount Langton, pretends to be one of them. But when he is wounded midcharade, Jonas's life is placed in the hands of an unlikely savior: a smuggler's daughter. Forced to flee before his wounds have fully healed, he does not think he will ever see her again—until she appears on his doorstep, seeking safe haven. Divided by their social standings yet united in their mutual desire to expose the leader of the smuggling ring, Jonas and Elizabeth are undeniably drawn to each other. Neither realizes, however, that they are dangerously close to uncovering explosive secrets from the past—secrets that will alter the course of their lives forever.

This was a fun adventure romance! I admired how Elizabeth endured such difficult times growing up in an inn that helped smugglers and how she does her best to stay honest despite her surroundings. Jonas is quite brave is go undercover with the smugglers, but his desire to figure out his father's death inspires him. Both of these main characters were incredibly brave. There were definitely some twists at the ends that I didn't expect, but the book did start pretty slow and took a while to get going. Overall, a fun adventure with some sweet romance!

Thank you NetGalley and Covenant Communications for the eARC!

Besides the story being great, and well written, I loved the historical aspect of this. Everything from the tea tax, to the people in parliament who tried to lower it, to the history of smuggling and the why's behind it. Fascinating. And then let's throw in a good clean romance, some danger and some mysteries, and what you you have? A good book that won't take you long to get through.

I loved Elizabeth's moral's. I loved who she was as a character. She really fit well with Jonas, expect for the whole class separation thing which was another interesting part of the story. Jonas's mother and sister were also great characters to have in this book.

There isn't much more that needs to be said other than I would read it again (or listen to it as the case may be), and I'd recommend it to others to give a try. Actually, I've already got my teenage daughter interested in it, so I think that's a good sign.

Wow! The Noble Smuggler was such a beautiful read!! I loved getting to know more about this practice (which, admittedly, I hadn't heard much about before) while getting to know the main characters' lives, backgrounds, struggles, and of course, see them slowly fall for each other. I loved Ms. Bessey's blend of lush descriptions, action scenes, mischief, a suspense thread, and romantic moments wonderfully woven throughout this story.

I think Miss Elizabeth Doyle made for a great heroine, always facing uncertainty with bravery and determination while also maintaining a kind and gentle spirit towards others who needed it. Of course, Lord Jonas, Viscount of Langton was her perfect counterpart. Also brave and kind while looking for ways to serve king and country, as well as seeking justice for personal matters, I enjoyed and learned a lot through his Reynard persona, looking forward to his next interaction with Elizabeth. Of course, the cast of secondary characters was just as wonderful and added to my enjoyment of this book. Finally, what became the cherry on top of my experience while reading this book was finding out the shared loved of birds with the main character (I think I learned a bit more about them through these pages). ~5 stars

This is one of those historical fictions you will find yourself unable to put down once you get into it. It's filled with all the good things, intrigue, twists, a wonderful romance and more. I could not help but keep making up theories on what might happen next, it's just one of those books that leaves you turning pages to see what might happen/be revealed.

A truly enjoyable read, I recommend it for anyone who loves a little history mixed in with romance. Oh, and that cover simply cannot be ignored.

Easily 5 stars. :)

The Nobel Smuggler is an excellent read with many twists and turns. Although it is almost a history lesson it has a charming story. I really like the main characters. They have a really good banter and camaraderie between them. I like how Elizabeth works with Jonas's mother, she doesn't discount her but rather finds a way for her to function again. So sweet!

I received an advance copy in exchange for a fair review. The opinions are my own.

Elizabeth has worked as barmaid for her innkeeper father ever since the death of her mother - including serving the smugglers after a successful run. She doesn't like or agree with the smuggling, but sees no way to escape. Jonas, the Viscount Langton, hates the smuggling that goes on around his estate, but also has a more personal objection because of the mysterious death (declared an accident) of his father years earlier when he tried to interfere with the smugglers. Jonas decides to go undercover as a smuggler, but doesn't expect to be shot on his second run, thus risking exposure and disgrace. Elizabeth helps to save him from discovery and to nurse him, without knowing who he really is. When the need arises to escape a forced marriage, she contacts him under his smuggling name, offering him her mother's one treasure, a medallion, if he will help her. In the process, she inadvertently grows close to him - until she discovers who he really is. But a viscount could never marry a barmaid, so that dream must be put aside - or is there some way...?

Characters to love, characters to hate, situations to enjoy, situations to worry about - this book has them all. It's definitely not your typical Regency story, with a masquerading viscount and a surprisingly well-educated barmaid, but it works. It's a good story, quite well written, and keeps one's attention - though a few times I did think something felt a little fishy, but not enough to really bother me, though it might some people. I'd try more by the author.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

Fans of Georgian-era novels will enjoy this wholesome historical romance full of likeable main and side characters. Jonas pretends to be smuggler in an effort to thwart a gang of smugglers and find out what really happened to his father many years ago. Elizabeth's father is deeply involved in the gang, but she doesn't want to be. Both have secrets and face danger on their road to stopping the smugglers and achieving a happy ending for themselves.

I really liked this book. The intrigue and secret identities were really interesting. Elizabeth has a lot of pluck and Jonas was daring and kind. Frankly I wouldn't mind Lord Langton's sister, Rosalind, getting a story of her own because she is pretty awesome!
The setting and smuggling aspect of the story reminded me a little bit of Poldark.

Wonderful book! Pulls you in from the first page. This was my first book by Sian Ann Bessey; but it certainly won't be my last.

The Noble Smuggler by Sian Ann Bessey is a masterful combining of two worlds. A young woman raised in a pub that protects smugglers and a young aristocrat posing as a smuggler to find a way to catch the ringleader. Throw in instant attraction that can’t be acted on because of their different social standing and you have a setup that build a delightful story. The lead characters are well written, believable and robust. The story is filled with secondary characters that really take it from a story to an adventure. The tale is so well told I didn’t want it to end. I couldn’t even remember turning pages through most of it. I highly recommend The Noble Smuggler.

This was a great book. I enjoyed the intrigue and the smuggling story as it kept the reader in suspense as things played out. The characters were well developed and you came to love them and wanted to root for them. The conclusion was hinted at, but good to see how it resolved. An enjoyable read!

This story by Sian Bessey. set in Kent, England was truly charming. I really enjoyed being immersed in the smuggling world of 1780’s England. Things are not always as they appear in this novel by Sian Bessey, and there are many twists and turns. There is adventure, kidnapping, mistaken identities, mystery, and much more which all make for a very satisfying read.

Elizabeth Doyle works in her father’s, Cyrus Doyle, inn as barmaid. At the beginning of the book her mother passes away. Right before her mother passes, she shows Elizabeth a beautiful pendant that she has hidden in her room and tells her to use the necklace to find her way. Naturally, Elizabeth thinks that the only way her mother could have acquired the necklace is through smuggling, but is that true? There is no love lost between Elizabeth’s mother and father; when Elizabeth tells her father that her mother has died, he tells her that she needs to go serve the customers – there is no time to mourn her mother’s death. Why is he so cold?

Elizabeth’s father, Cyrus, is heavily involved in the Lamhurst Gang, a notorious group of smugglers. Jonas Ainsworth, Viscount Langton believes the Lamhurst Gang is responsible for the deaths of his father and other passengers aboard the ship Alouette seventeen years earlier. Jonas would like to expose the members of the smuggling gang, so he infiltrates the gang, and is known as Reynard. On a night that the smugglers are receiving cargo, Jonas is shot by the Preventative Men, officers of the crown. Advised to seek shelter at Cyrus Doyle’s inn, Elizabeth takes care of his wounds. While Jonas is at the inn, he tells Elizabeth that if she ever needs help, that she should go to Langton Manor and ask for him. The day soon comes that she needs help, and the world of Elizabeth Doyle, barmaid, and Jonas Ainsworth, Viscount Langton, also known as Reynard in the smuggling world, collide.

You will love this story, and you will be pulled into this web of mysteries. Why is Elizabeth’s father so cold? How could the necklace lead Elizabeth to find her way? Were the smugglers responsible for the death of Jonas’ father and others aboard the Alouette?
