While it's hard to tell too much from a short sample, I can definitely tell that I'm going to love this novel! I can't wait to read how Alexandra Bracken weaves in Greek mythology in this action-packed book. These first few chapters were amazing, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest!

This novel was an enjoyable read and I would recommend it to those who like to read new iterations or retellings of myths. Meloria, nicknamed Lore is a young, strong female character who has struggled with a traumatic past. She is part of a cult of ancient families who are attendant to the gods, but who can also ascend to be gods. This creates a hyper competitive hierarchical society that Lore must learn to navigate at a young age in order to survive. Her family's honor depends upon it. This society exists in the modern world but adheres to the traditions handed down to them. Lore's name is inflected with this definition of the term lore. Lore strives to succeed and be accepted while feeling great ambivalence over the society she inhabits. After losing her family she must find her way on her own, but is inevitably drawn back into the intrigues of her past.

[6 Chapter NetGalley Review of Lore by Alexander Bracken]

Wow, where to begin? Alexandra Bracken’s Lore is exactly what the title lends itself to be. Her twist on the world of Greek Mythology is something even I could not conjure up in my head. The main character, who is aptly named Lore, is someone I find so captivating that I’m itching to read more about. The Agon, which is held every seven years as punishment for rebellion, has chosen it’s location in the place where Lore calls home-New York City, during which nine Greek gods become mortal and are hunted by descendants of ancient bloodlines in hopes of obtaining their power. As Lore’s friend Miles’ puts it, it’s “the Olympics, only with more murders.” The descriptive writing alone is enough to have you keep turning the page to see what happens next. If this six chapter excerpt is any indication of how the rest of the book will proceed, then we’re all in for an unforgettable story with a protagonist that is not only relatable, but strong willed and charming. I can’t wait for the January 5th release!

So I got to read the first 6 chapters of "Lore" and I must say I want more, and luckily I will get the book in January.

I love the Greek mythology with a twist of hunger games, it gives it some spice to it. But I allso Luke Lore so far cause she seems to be a strong female character.

I'll give it 4 star simply because I actually want to know what happens now. The rating can change when I read the full book, but for now I'm very entertained and captured.

OVERALL RATING: 3/5 stars. I absolutely love the concept of this book, and I think it has a lot of potential, but the execution fell short. The pacing was off, the presentation of information was not done well, there was unnecessary graphic content, and there were some problems with diverse rep.
PACING: there was a lot of action in this sampler, but the pacing somehow felt very very slow. It was confusing and honestly despite the action some parts were quite boring.
INFORMATION: At the very beginning of the story, the reader is given almost no information. It feels like I was thrown into a pool without knowing how to swim and left on my own. Then in chapter five, the backstory is given all at once, way too quickly.
GRAPHIC CONTENT: In the first six chapters there is already some violence and gore that is graphic. Based on reviews I’ve read, it only gets worse - there is explicit talk of the s*xual abuse of children that is never addressed.
REP: Miles, Lore’s best friend, is Korean, but he is described as having “skin [...] white as a bone.” This plays into an unfortunately common and very harmful misconception that Asian people are white. Asian people are NOT white. That includes East Asian people. Light skin does not equal white. Miles is also gay. He feels very much like a token gay character of color; in these six chapters the only individual trait of his we see is that he has tattoos; he’s used as a plot device to reveal the background information in one large infodump.

Really enjoyed this! Explores Greek mythology with a lot of depth, and in creative ways. It's also action-packed and feels very cinematic. I also adored Lore as a protagonist--she's often angry, defiant, and out for revenge, which I love. Really excited for this one!

Full review coming soon.

This was a decent read! I’ve never read Alexandra Brackens other books so I didn’t know how I would fee with this one but the mythology in the contemporary setting was very interesting and I actually liked it a lot!

I have great expectations of this book, being Greek myself.

I very much enjoy Alex Bracken's writing style and I honestly want to see how the characters will evolve and how the story will progress later on.

Although there's not much I can say just from a sampler, I'm really excited to read more of it, and I highly suggest that people who love Greek mythology and Urban Fantasy give this one a try.

LOVE this tease!!!! I can't wait to get more. So far the story is action from the get-go and I am completely intrigued by the premise! MORE MORE MORE

I've had mixed reactions to Alexander Bracken's previous works, but the premise of LORE intrigued me too much to pass up, and I have to say it's got me hooked so far.
I think Lore's voice and humor is something incredibly easy to fall into and hooked me right away. I like her devil-may-care attitude and I have a feeling it will work very well when we see her interact with some of tge gods and gods-to-be.

Thank you NetGalley for the digital advance chapter sampler of this book.

I really enjoyed reading this sampler. I can't wait to read the rest of the book. Who doesn't love reading about fallen Gods and the people hunting them!?!

Lore by Alexandra Bracken started with a bang and it was quite intrigued that I got engrossed with the plot. To my surprise story is quite different as it sounded like a modern fantasy with a Greek mythology touch up with a strong feminist voice. However, I couldn’t connect well with the protagonist but I’m definitely looking forward to read as the story might develop as you read further.

Thank you #Netgalley for giving this opportunity to review.

The first 6 chapters of Alexandra Bracken’s Lore have made me even more excited to read the whole book! We are introduced to a world in which the Greek gods, goddesses, and myths we are familiar with are real—with a twist. As a punishment, nine Olympians are sent to earth as mortals every seven years for seven whole days, an occurrence known as the Agon. During this week, they are sought after by hunters, descendants of well known Greek myth heroes, who strive to kill these mortal turned gods to claim their powers and immortality and instate themselves as the new version of the particular god or goddess they killed. Our main character, Lore, despite her resentment of the Agon, finds herself caught within it once again after she is given new information by a now mortal Athena about her entire family’s murder from years prior. Lore must work together with Athena, among others, to prevent the rise of a new god and the possible destructive fate of humanity. Right off the bat, Lore is an enthralling protagonist who takes you on such a unique and imaginative adventure. I CANNOT wait to read the rest of this book when it comes out on January 5, 2021!

The fact that has greek mithology was the sole reason of my request, and I wasn`t let down by the first few pages of this book. It took some pages to fully understand what was happening but I loved the main character already and I can`t wait to read the rest of this book when it comes out! For fans who enjoy almost impossible situations, badass women, greek mithology, great one liners and someone just wanting to be at peace.

People frame this book as a Percy Jackson meet The Hunger Games, and I don't think it's an accurate description. Percy Jackson is MG, and it doesn't cover any of the themes in Hunger Games or Lore, and I believe the comparison can be very misleading and even harm the minors who will read this book thinking it's a la Percy Jackson.

Having said that, I didn't know what to expect from this story. I enjoyed the sample, and when the book comes out, I will borrow it from the library. But like Lore, I feel torn and can't really say if I liked it or just enjoyed it.

- The writing style is compelling, and the voice is appealing, but it does not read like a YA novel. It felt like I was reading an adult novel.

- Lore as the main character is intriguing. If I can only describe her with one word, that'd be torn, and personally, I couldn't connect to that--to Lore's motivations and why she was torn. Also, there was one conversation that felt too convenient and provided answers too easily.

- The world-building is intricate and interesting.

- According to one review on Goodreads, there's only one black character in the book, which I found very problematic. There's some LGBTQ representation.

/This is a sample of the first 64 pages aka first 6 chapters./

I enjoyed the sample; enough to want to read the book, but by borrowing it from the library. The writing style is quite compelling, and the voice is very appealing--albeit not YA. It felt like I was reading a NA/adult novel, which sadly happens a lot.

I also don't know how to feel about the main character. She's more torn than anything else, and from what I've read, I can't connect to that aspect of hers. To explain this further, I can understand both sides and why someone/I would be torn between them, but I can't connect to Lore's motivations and why she was torn. Also, there was one conversation with a certain goddess that revealed a lot of information, but it felt too convenient.

Misogyny was touched upon, which was good and gave the book a contemporary feminist perspective of the old ways, but at the same time, I felt like, building the world that way wasn't really necessary? In terms of the world, from what we learn through the sample, it's intricate and detailed and thorough. How the Greek words were written in the text felt jarring to me--a Greek person, born and raised in Greece-- and not very organic.

I tried to find reviews by marginalized people, and I could only find one on Goodreads, and that person said there's only one black character in the book and she wasn't fully developed. This is very problematic for me.

There's some LGBTQ representation, but I can't comment on if it was done well, because the sample is too short.

Overall, I'll read the whole book, and the concept is good, but it doesn't read like a YA and a few things were jarring to me; hence, my rating. Also, I hope content warnings are officially added to the book summary and on websites, etc, because it could be harmful to the minors who will pick up this book.

Thank you for offering the 6-chapter sample!
