LORE by Alexandra Bracken

„A feather fallen from a wing is not lost, but free“

I was able to read a six chapter long sampler of this book, provided by NetGalley and the publisher. Both, sneak peeks shared by the author and the cover made me really excited to start this book. And I was so not disappointed.
Throughout the last two months I was in a reading slump and could never concentrate on one book for long, but LORE gripped my throat right on the first page and did not let go of me until I breezed through the chapters. Bracken mixes Greek mythology with a modern setting seemlessly and if someone would come up to me tomorrow and tell me 'Hey, it's all true' I'd believe it right that second.
LORE is the first of Bracken's writing I have read and her easy yet really beautiful writing made me screenshot every other line and now I can not even decide which quote I wish to put in front of this review. I simply know I need more of this.
The interesting and well written side-characters, no matter if there are as important as the best friend or only mentioned once like the bodega cat, center the main character Lore in her world and give her a threedimensional shape. We enter her world through a door and we are suddenly encompassed by it completely. The description and dialogue never once broke my immersion and the many layered main character combined with the mythology and worldbuilding left me almost desperate to find out what is actually happening.
I have always enjoyed Greek myths and stories inspired by it and I adored the detail and care that was put into this story by the author, clearly showing in simple things like the naming system of the characters as well as the bigger picture.
The last chapter left me a little hanging and now January 2021 cannot come fast enough because I desperately need to read this book! I am really rooting for the Lore and cannot wait to accompany her on this hopefully interesting journey.
Full review to come once I have read the entire book. This short review was cross-posted to Goodreads (and Amazon upon release) as well as quoted on Instagram and Twitter.

This chapter sampler left me wanting more! I was intrigued by the premise in the description, and I also love this author. I expected this new book to be a unique blend of our real world and sci-fi/fantasy, just like her other series. The beginning definitely lived up to the hype. Lore starts out swinging, literally, as our main character Lore is taking fights to make money and let out her grief and nerves. A mysterious figure from her past shows up and quickly upsets the routine she's been using to hide from her past. Then a goddess shows up nearly dead at her doorstep and pulls her back into her old world as a hunter with the promise of revenge for her murdered family. The mythology here draws on what gods readers would already know but imagines an entirely new relationship between them and mortals. The book explains it better than I ever could, but it comes across as if the gods and hunters are playing a deadly game for power and legacies that will live on in infamy. I can't wait to read more and see how these epic showdowns, Lore's past, and what choices she'll make in the future all come together in the rest of the story.

I need this book now! I love mythology and the first few chapters were enthralling. It already feels like a unique story and I completely trust this publisher to put out an amazing mythological novel!

I love all things related to Greek Mythology so this caught my attention immediately. Now after reading this chapter sampler I am dying to read the entire thing. I'm hooked!

Thanks to Disney-Hyperion and NetGalley for this sampler - anxiously awaiting the full thing!

I'm a sucker for anything related to Greek Mythology, and I'm so excited for this book! Also considering it is from the author of The Darkest Minds, I am all the more curious.
First thoughts from the sampler I read - interesting concept and the story has been setup well so far. Not a fan of all the main characters being just perfect to look at, with model-like features. For example, I hated how Lore was noticing how good-looking and Adonis-like Castor (?) was in the middle of a freaking fight, but oh well. It's a personal pet peeve of mine, one that I'm willing to overlook if the whole setup pays off at the end.

Anyway, the book holds great potential and I can't wait to read more!

Thank you so much to Disney Hyperion and NetGalley for this sneak peak at Lore!

With mythical characters old and new and a hunger games for the Gods Lore is sure to be a tasty morsel for fans of fantasy. In just 64 pages, this sneak peak hooked me as it will hook readers of all ages with great pacing, character development, and world building. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to request the full galley and will keep my fingers and toes crossed for approval.

I received a sneak peek into this book in the 2020 Fall/Winter Buzz book.
I was excited to request the full book, then I see there was a mistake in the posting and this was just a chapter sampler... so i got a slightly bigger sneak pee into this book ...
I NEED MORE.

I not a HUGE fan of Bracken. I bought the Darkest Minds box set, convinced I would love it. and I couldn't even make it to "Through the Dark"
I TORE through the first half of the darkest mind, it started off so strong and then failed me at the end. So the concern is that this book would do the same.

I am a fan of Greek mythology, and so far this book is 5 stars.
I just hope that it carries through and that I have the opportunity to change my opinion about the author.

This is based on a chapter sample and not the full book. This could change once I read the full book. However, I the chapter sample holds great potential. I hope to be approved for the full ARC when available.

This sampler already made me so incredibly excited for the book! Alexandra Bracken is one of my all time favorite YA authors, and in my opinion everything she writes is gold. I cannot wait to see how this story unfolds further... the sampler definitely made me want the full book even more.

This is my first Alexandre Bracken read, and just by this sampler I think I should definitely pick up the rest of her books! Lore instantly captured my attention from the first page--the story felt interesting and fresh. I loved the voice of Lore and her friendship with Miles. There was a bit of info dumping you have to get past when Lore explains to Miles how her world works, which kind of slows down the natural rhythm. The sampler ended on a good cliffhanger, just sad I wont get to see Lore and Cas' next interaction until Jan 2021. Definitely earned a pre-order in my book though.

I was excited for this sampler since I am a sucker for anything about mythology.
I had a hard time understanding the system that Bracken was trying to set up until the last chapter when it is fully laid out. All the tid bits up to then just caused more confusion as I tried to fit the idea into what I know about the Greek Gods.
I would be interested in reading the rest of the story to see how she builds upon it.

This was absolutely amazing! I loved every single moment in this sampler, and I cannot wait until the full book comes out. I was already really looking forward to this release, but I’m even more so now. Definitely have this marked on your TBR folks, it’s fantastic!

I had the opportunity to read a 6 chapter excerpt of Lore (coming 01/25/2021) and I can't wait to get my hands on the full book!
Admittedly, I'm a Greek mythology fanatic, and I love story lines that incorporate those ancient mythologies. Lore is a modern fantasy with a twist that brings those ancient deities into the modern world. Here's the blurb:
Every seven years, the Agon begins. As punishment for a past rebellion, nine Greek gods are forced to walk the earth as mortals, hunted by the descendants of ancient bloodlines, all eager to kill a god and seize their divine power and immortality.
Long ago, Lore Perseous fled that brutal world in the wake of her family's sadistic murder by a rival line, turning her back on the hunt's promises of eternal glory. For years she's pushed away any thought of revenge against the man--now a god--responsible for their deaths.

Yet as the next hunt dawns over New York City, two participants seek out her help: Castor, a childhood friend of Lore believed long dead, and a gravely wounded Athena, among the last of the original gods.

The goddess offers an alliance against their mutual enemy and, at last, a way for Lore to leave the Agon behind forever. But Lore's decision to bind her fate to Athena's and rejoin the hunt will come at a deadly cost--and still may not be enough to stop the rise of a new god with the power to bring humanity to its knees.

The first six chapters did not disappoint. It has an excellent pace, hints at mystery, adds some humor, and got right to the tension. It's a fresh, unique take on Greek mythology and I'm excited to read more.

Now...who do I have to bribe to get more?

*I received an excerpt of Lore from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

When I requested this, it was advertised as the whole book, and I don't like to read chapter samplers so I'm holding off until I read the entire book.

Well, this seems like an intriguing premise. Greek gods along with bloody thirsty, power hungry new gods, in a deadly game to the death (and rebirth): count me in. As a lover of all things Greek mythology, I liked how such myths were adapted and modernised, whilst set against a modern backdrop. Lore is set in the modern age, in the bustling city of New York, yet deals with myths that are thousands of years old. I loved the combination of new and old, myth and modernity. The game aspect piqued my interest and the characters, both mortal and immortal, intrigued me too. This sneak peak has definitely left me wanting more and to watch the story unfold and unravel before me. I need answers and more clarity. I'll definitely be picking up Lore in future.

Lore is a unique spin on Greek mythology, and after reading the first six chapters, I am excited to delve deeper into Lore's world. In the beginning, the reader gets a lot of back story (which can be overwhelming), however the vivid descriptions of how Lore feels and what she thinks really drew me in and made it easier to keep reading. So far, the potential love storyline seems to have a neon sign pointing toward it, but that doesn't mean that I'm upset about it. Overall, I am very eager to read the rest of this book!

This sample is really great and I'm excited for the actual release. As a kid I loved Greek mythology and that love never faded. Having a new book on my shelf would be great and I want it to be this one. Lore is a fantastic character and not a weak heroine like so many other YA main characters. It's bloody and gritty and I'm in love with it.

If there's one thing I've learned, in my reading journey, it's that I will read literally anything Alexandra Bracken writes. Give her a pen, and have her transcribe a phonebook from the 1970s. I'll gladly get lost in those yellow pages again and again, because there's something magical about the way she transforms her words.

The preview for Lore only solidifies my love of her prose. Bracken continues to impress and grow as an author, embracing all the best qualities of story-telling. I can already tell you that Lore will likely be her best work to date--all from its lyrical tone, mythology and aesthetics. If a preview can showcase all of these things, one can only imagine the magic of the full novel.

Although this was merely a chapter sample, my anticipation for Lore has hit an all time high. With the pandemic pulling us all and isolating us from each other, words have always offered a solitude of escapism and I need this book like I need air.

Long story short? I cannot wait to get my hands on this one. Is it January, yet?
