Can you go home again? That's the question facing Detective Clara Jeffries in this new series featuring a woman wo left her strict Mormon community and now is back- searching for her sister. There are secrets and lies and no small amount of drama. Nicely done.

Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.

This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.

Couldn't sleep so I've just finished my latest book 😅
I'll leave my review at the end of this post!

This is the first of 3

3.5 out of 5 stars

So if I'm honest this book although a detective book isn't something I usually find interesting especially with the religious setting.

The case was quite good but I figured out who the killer was pretty quickly in this one.
Although I was sad for some of the evidence & overwhelming glad for other parts.

This book took some getting into (again I'm pretty sure it was just the setting of this book)
I did sort of enjoy it but it's not something I would recommend per-say.

I love police procedural thrillers. The author spent a great amount of time diving into the life of Clara and gave us a great picture of her past. Clara is a police officer and is called upon by her former crush, Max, who is investigating her missing sister. During this her other sister goes missing and no one is talking. The book is based in Utah, which revolves around Mormons. Creepy factor. They aren’t the only girls to go missing. Some twists I didn’t see coming. I am very fascinated with the authors writing and will be reading more

“Guns dont mix well with stupid” - one of the best lines I’ve read!

This was a smart police procedural mixed with a tale of sisters that tugged at my heart.

The mystery kept me guessing and the storyline laid out set the stage for an exciting new series. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

So happy to have gotten my hands on the first book in this series - looking forward to the ones to come!
This was a great start to Clara Jefferies and laying the groundwork for more books. Loved the writing and it most definitely was a page-turner that kept me questioning everyone!

A huge thank you to NetGalley, Kathryn Casey and Bookouture for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.

I would like to thank Bookouture and Netgalley for allowing me to read this book.

We find Clara Jefferies who is a detective and she investigates the disappearance of her little sister Delilah. She will have to face her past and of course return home.

Once home she realizes that her mother Ardeth has moved out of town. She refuses to talk to anyone, even the police, and Calra knows that her mother is incapable of protecting her family.

Except that two other girls are missing. She realizes that her little sister isn't the only one in danger and when she gets a call that a body has been found ....

Clara will have to search all over town and the surrounding area to find her sister no matter what.

A book read in one go so much I was hooked on the story so moving in some passages, gripping, captivating, addictive, filled with suspense and twists with very endearing characters. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Clara left her home in Utah many years ago to make a life for herself away from her mormon community as polygamy was rife, and in doing so she renounced her faith so when she returns after a phone call from her old boyfriend Max asking her to come as her sister Delilah has gone missing she arrives home to find she is shunned by the community and unwelcome by her family.
There are three girls missing but their families aren’t concerned or interested in looking fir them as they are convinced they’ve run away and consider them a disgrace, even the local police aren’t looking for them but Clara knows there’s more to it and she has to revisit her own past to find them!

An excellent gripping and very interesting read I was thoroughly engrossed the whole way through and found the ending very surprising. I highly recommend this book and I can’t wait to read more from this author.

Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Kathryn Casey for the ARC of The Fallen Girl my review is honest and unbiased.

The Fallen Girls by Kathryn Casey is the first book in the Detective Clara Jefferies Series and I loved it. This story is book one in the Detective Clara Jeffries series. The story follows Dallas detective Clara Jeffries as she is led back to her hometown to help investigate the disappearance of a young girl. The hometown in question is the fictional town of Alber, Utah which is predominantly populated by a polygamous Mormon sect.

I traditionally do not like police procedurals but I was quite surprised at how much I liked this one. It didn't follow the same cut and paste plot with the same old done to death characters as 90% of police procedurals I have read... and trust me, I've read quite a few the last two years and they tend to meld in to one...

What I liked about this book is that it didn't give everything away about the characters in the first novel, it seems like the development of characters will grow over the series and I'm looking forward to reading book two and seeing how the characters grow. In fact out of all the detective series I have read lately, this book had the best characters hands down.

I did guess the ending about two thirds of the way through but that never really bothers me. What did bother me was the ending, I felt it draaaaged out and then wrapped up too quickly in the epilogue.

I also felt like it was a slow burner in the middle of the book and I lost concentration half way through.

However, with those last few points in mind, I still really enjoyed this book and I think this could be a really excellent series. I enjoyed the subject matter, it was different and well worth the read.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was a fantastic first instalment of the Detective Clara Jefferies series. It was complex and exceptionally well written. I can’t wait to see what happens throughout the series, I’ll definitely be waiting for the next one.

This was an interesting book. I liked it when I read it. But that was about it. I did enjoy the main character and the mystery.

Readers are always looking for the first book in a new series. Every new series must be built around a character that is well developed and has a unique, interesting back story that gives the character the "quirks" that will keep the readers coming back to see what's going to happen next. Kathryn Casey has definitely figured out the right combination in her Detective Claire Jefferies series.
Claire Jefferies grew up in a polygamous family, one father, many mothers, brothers and sisters. The story of her childhood will be told throughout this book and the ones to follow...and it's already stirred lots of interest in my reading group. Claire leaves her home, family and friends to live a more socially acceptable lifestyle. This is the background build up that leads up to....
Detective Claire Jeffries is contacted by her hometown's law enforcement with a request to assist in a missing persons case. The young woman who disappeared did so under the same circumstances as several other young women, she also happens to be Claire's sister. Claire believes that with her experience, her sister can be found easily. She will find herself shunned by her family so must work around them to find clues.
THE FALLEN GIRLS is a great start to what we hope is a long, successful series. The first book is definitely a winner!

I've always found cornfields creepy. You can't see if there is somebody hiding or how far the field stretches. The author really has captured this feeling, making me shiver and holding my breath. The setting in the polygamist society was fascinating and new to me. I haven't read any books before this about polygamists, but now I'm curious to find out more. Really good start to a new series and I definitely will pick up the next book about Clara Jefferies.
