Nevertheless She Wore It covers the fifty iconic fashion moments of women over the years, old and new. With short chapters and lively, colourful illustrations, it covers fashion moments created by women that made a social, cultural and political mark. Don't want to to sound petty but the only critique I have is the lack of inclusion of Asian and Middle Eastern women in this book. I am not a follower of fashion trends but I am pretty sure Asian and Middle Eastern women must have their own fashion iconic moments to boast of 😉.

My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Chronicle Books and the author Ann Shen for the e-Arc of the book.

This book was a fun, quick read but also informative and inspiring. It’s a good complement to the heavy antiracist reading because it shows that the smallest form of activism can happen via something as simple as putting on a pair of pants.

💁🏻‍♀️ I was not familiar with many of these stories but I appreciated Shen highlighting ones like Kiran Ghandi’s period pants, Princess Diana’s revenge dress, Rachel McAdam’s breast pump magazine shoot, The Durag, RGB’s dissent collar, and so many more!
💁🏻‍♀️ Shen’s illustrations are beautiful! Tip: have Google Images handy in case you want to pull up photos of the referenced article of clothing
💁🏻‍♀️ Fashion as social dissent - I do like this idea but the two critiques I have of it in this day and age as follows. First, fashion and clothing are still too gendered. We aren’t critiquing what male public figures are wearing but every eye is on what Hillary, Palin, Pelosi, and AOC are sporting. Secondly, when I say that it’s easy to put on an article of clothing, I don’t mean that activism is that simple. Movements against injustice take much more coordination than that.

Overall, I love reading about all these powerful women who have made bold stances with their fashion choices.

Hiii! I so can’t wait to discuss this amazing book with all of you. Let’s start.😁

Nevertheless, She Wore It is a collection that chronicles iconic fashion items like the crop top, or even jeans, with also including iconic fashion moments like Lady Gaga wearing the infamous meat dress, or Princess Diana’s Revenge Dress, and even the meaning behind Supreme Court Justice RBG’s judicial collars. Explore women’s fashion in this beautifully illustrated collection.😊

I have always been pulled by fashion, even considering it as a career at one point, before realizing that sewing and my disability didn’t connect. That being said, I have always one to look at the red carpets more than the award show, and even used to write little mini reports on carpet looks worn by stars. I am blessed to be extremely close with a fashion queen @autumnsarahstory, and always love looking at her stories full of runway content, and more. It’s safe to say that this book was exactly my cup of tea, and hit the spot exactly. It was magical to read about different fashion movements worn by women that quite literally changed the world. I can’t recommend this enough, and I wish it was 500 pages longer. I could read about this kind of thing for forever.🥰

Do you like reading about anything, like I love reading about fashion? Let me know!💋

Dm me to talk about all things book or writing related! I’ll be looking forward to it! —Em😌

Great little book highlighting the pivotal moments of fashion in popular culture, albeit western culture. Super cute illustrations. Would be great to see other iconic fashion moments in other cultures, ie the burkini or hijood designed by a Lebanese-Australian woman ❤️

Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to review this work.

Today is the book birthday of “Nevertheless, She Wore It” by author and illustrator Ann Shen and let me just say, it is FANTASTIC.
Shen’s newest book is phenomenal, timely and iconic! 50 different looks are featured, chronicling women’s style trends against culture and world history and it is truly fascinating. Did you know that when the bob hair style came into the early 20th century, young co-eds could be expelled from school for getting one, and that the Washington Post wrote an article in 1925 called “The Economic Impact of the Bob”? (There were only 5000 beauty parlors in 1920, but over 21,000 in 1925, once this hair style became popular.)
Mary Tyler Moore wanted to wear capris and flats on The Dick Van Dyke Show...because that's what women were really wearing at home.... but she had to alternate her capris with looser fitting pants in various scenes because network executives were concerned about the “cupping under” of her form-fitting capris, and wanted to go easy on viewers as they became used to seeing her behind. TV executives didn’t like belly buttons either, and though Jeannie, Ginger and Mary Ann dared not bare theirs, Cher (and the women on Star Trek) were braved the frontier, defying the Code of Practices for Television Broadcasters that was in place until NINETEEN EIGHTY-THREE. #what
With sharp illustrations that capture every look from durags to denim shorts to dissent collars, you'll want to grab this book for anyone who loves culture, history and fashion. It would make a great gift, but you should probably just go ahead and gift yourself one, too. I did.
Thanks to #netgalley for letting me have an advance reader's copy of this great book with the BEST title! It was a joy to read! #NeverthelessSheWoreIt

One thing that I really liked about this book, aside from the beautiful illustrations, is that it’s a perfect reminder that anyone can chance the world simply by putting on an item of clothing. Which does say a lot about this world. For centuries women have been demanding to be heard, so it should be no surprise that they’ve taken up making countless statements with their fashion choices.

Powerful statements aside, this book is a great timeline of the long way fashion has come. From pants to minis, we have so many trend setters to thank for what we can wear today and this book tells all their stories so well that it’ll leave you wanting to know more about all of them.

Adorable illustrated guide to fashion history with the common theme of women's empowerment.

Ann Shen's book is a wonderful resource or gift for people who love fashion and/or feminism, but don't necessarily connect the two. This book does just that. It explains various fashion items, icons and moments in fashion history from around the world, covering multiple places and ethnicities - and why each of them was a big step in the feminist movement.

The illustrations are gorgeous as they play a vital role, accompanying the relatively brief bodies of text. Thanks to the way it's designed, I would not only read this book as an adult, but also give it to my daughter.

Combining subject matters of fashion and feminism / activism is truly crucial. I believe Ann Shen nails it in this beautiful book.

Nevertheless, She Wore it by Ann Shen perfectly lays out every nuance in fashion senses. This book not only takes on the history of revolutionized fashion but also gives away its underlying message - women empowerment.

Surprisingly, Ann Shen has actually done a great study on 50 iconic fashions around the world. I'm very pleased to learn about every bit of them, from the timeless, iconic fashions to modern, renowned fashions. We follow the story chronologically so it's really easy to navigate through. Not to mention, this is actually a semi illustrated book. You'll get entranced with their beautiful illustrations - and I'm surprised this book possess a very wonderful diversity. You can see every race and ethnicity being mentioned here. I love it!

5 Stars ( I received an e-arc from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review)

I genuinely enjoyed every moment of reading this graphic novel/ female fashion history book. There was a variety of iconic styles and moments, some of them very well known and some I had never heard of. Ann Shen’s art style is beautiful, simple and chic that I would love to purchase my own copy to display. This would be a great book for young fashionistas in particular or even teenagers who want to learn about some of the most well known fashion styles. I am now interested to check out the authors previous illustrated books.

I really loved this book! The illustrations were gorgeously done! I also liked learning what was considered a movement in women's fashion because now it all seems so different! It is wild what women had to fight for and are still fighting for today!

This book was a lot of fun, and I would absolutely give it to anyone new to fashion history (age 10ish and up)! It is quite brief- only a page or two on each entry- but it covers a wonderful mix of one-off specific pieces and cultural garments. The illustrations are wonderful, and my only constructive criticism is that there isn't always an illustration for an entry!

Having previously read Bad Girls Throughout History, I knew I wanted to read more books by this author and illustrator, so I was pleasantly surprised when I happened across this on NetGalley.

This book is a wonderful look at how fashion for women often went hand in hand with feminist issues, women’s rights, and liberation.
We follow many wonderful women who broke the rules of fashion- from something as seemingly simple as wearing pants, or a bikini changed history and the way women could dress. Some of the things we wear even became symbols of suffrage, like striped ribbons or red lipstick. Hemlines became shorter, more pants were worn, androgynous styles were worn, and makeup became more acceptable.
It's absolutely fascinating how something as simple as women wearing pants had such a huge impact on women in society today.

As always, I loved the accompanying illustrations and enjoyed my many google searches that took place to see certain famous dresses that were mentioned.

The only thing I disliked about this book was the decision to have all the items of clothing alphabetical rather than chronological. I still loved the book regardless.

4 stars. I love this series of books and the illustrations, I really hope Ann Shen decides to make more!

The cover of this book is really eye-catching and the illustrations throughout this book are just as stunning. This is truly a curl up with a cup and tea and power through kind of book, and I love it all the more for it. It is a wonderful account of how the fashion choices of women throughout history have made political statements and been catalysts for change.

This book will appeal to history and fashion lovers alike. Each item is well researched, beautifully illustrated and would be a wonderful read for adults and children. "Sartorial activism" is real and a long standing traditional that is celebrated really well in this book. Covering everything from the colours worn by Suffragettes, RBG's collars to current red carpet looks, no statement is left out. My favourite was the depiction of Diana's "Revenge Dress" - a classic to this very day.

I highly recommend this book!

I loved reading about history making pieces of clothing worn by female historical figures. Several jumped out at me as more memorable than most, such as Princess Di's revenge dress and Ruth Bader Ginsburg's collars. I do wish that they had included an illustration of Sandra Day O'Connor along with RBG.

There were several pieces of clothing that I hand't thought twice about- that looking back, carry a completely different meaning now.

I will say, however, that while reading about the cape, I couldn't help but hear Edna Mode saying "No capes!"

Overall, a great book with fantastic illustrations.

This book beautifully depicts the importance of fashion in today's world. Inspiring and often groundbreaking, these women dared to be who they are and express themselves!

Did you know that the bikini was named after the Bikini Atoll (a location in the United States used for nuclear bomb testing) because of their bombshell impact on the fashion industry? Neither did I, but this book gives its readers incredibly interesting information on 50 of the most iconic women's fashion trends. I loved learning about the history behind not only the trends themselves, but also the women who were bold enough to introduce them to the world.

I highly recommend this for fashionistas and history buffs but also pop-culture lovers too. It makes a great (and pretty!) coffee table book and could spark some interesting convos with dinner guests!
