While the first in a new series, this starts off as if we already know things about the characters. I was surprised when I just found out this was the first. I assumed I had missed some history. I've read other series by this author and really enjoyed them but I didn't like this book. Both of the main characters are rude, self-involved, and abrasive. I think Lily only thanked her employees once near the end of the book. She'd bark orders at her friend Bernie, who did not work for her, without a please and never a thank you. Her grandmother is equally rude. The overall story got monotonous because Lily cooked breakfast at the B&B then went to her tearoom for the rest of the afternoon, where she acted like she was engaged in noble work and entitled to everyone else's time and assistance, every single day. Getting off the property would have added some variety. I don't think I'll read future installments.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book.

Tea & Treachery, the first in a new series (Tea by the Sea Mysteries) by established cozy author Vicki Delany introduces readers to Lily, owner of an English tearoom on Cape Cod, and Rose, her grandmother and owner of the adjacent B&B. When a developer with designs on the property next door to Rose's Victorian home is found dead on her property, the octogenarian becomes the police's number one suspect. Lily sets out to prove that her grandmother didn't commit the dastardly deed, and along the way discovers that there are quite a few residents of their small coastal town who aren't crying over the deceased's untimely demise! Great cozy, and I look forward to future books in the series. A+

I received Tea and Treachery from Net Galley in exchange for a honest review. I flew through the book. The story grabbed me from the first page.

Fans of Vicki Delaney / Eva Gates are going to get a treat when they read this wonderful novel.

Lily and her grandmother, Rose, have flower names. Lily owns a tearoom, which is rare these days. And Lily has a short commute to work - she can walk to work! Her grandmother Rose owns the Bed and Breakfast Inn, which is a short walk from the tea room. And Lily lives in a guest cottage on the grounds of the B&B.

In the first of a new series, Lily has just opened up her dream English Tea Room on Cape Cod, next door to her beloved (if not infuriating) grandmother’s B&B, and her best friend has moved to town. Could things be any better?! Well, yes. Just as tourist season gets into full swing, a shady developer is found dead behind the B&B.

I love cozy mysteries set near to where I live! This is a good introduction to the series. There is some hints to the characters’ backstory that could lead to some interesting future storylines (I need to know more about the butcher knife!)

The only thing I didn’t like was the over-emphasis on the detectives “questionable” morality. I feel like anytime a clue or potential clue we’re uncovered, this was pointed out. It detracted from the over-all story.

I am absolutely looking forward to the next story in this series!!

DISCLAIMER: I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Tea & Treachery is the debut of the Tea by the Sea Mysteries series set in Cape Cod, MA and featuring tea shop proprietor Lily Roberts. A classically trained pastry chef, Lily quits her job in New York and moves to Cape Cod to keep an eye on her grandmother Rose, the feisty owner of a majestic B&B. Lily cooks breakfast for inn guests each morning but spends the rest of her days baking for her English tearoom.

Rose is upset that a real estate developer wants to buy the run down ramshackle house on the adjoining property and tear it down to build a fancy golf resort. Rose enjoys her privacy and the sweeping views and ends up threatening the developer, the town councilor in charge of the zoning board and the owner of the property, Lincoln Goodwill. A vocal disagreement followed up by a nasty letter leaves developer Jack Ford dead and Rose the prime suspect in his murder.

Determined to clear her grandmother's name, Lily sets out with the help of her best friend Bernie, an aspiring writer to track down a killer. Along the way she finds an unexpected ally in Matt Goodwill, the property owner's son who doesn't want to see his father sell the old homestead either and newly hired gardener Simon who both believe that the local Detective might also be on the take.

A well crafted plot, a cast of likable characters and a delightful dog named Eclair. There's just a hint of romance is in the air for both Lily and Bernie. I will be returning to Cape Cod for more adventures with Rose, Lily and their friends.

I received an advanced copy of Tea & Treachery from NetGalley via Kensington Publishing. While not required to write a review I am happy to offer my honest opinion.

Good start to a new cozy series! Like that she has a solid head on her shoulders and that she’s in trying to decide between suitors. And, the setting is lovely. And the afternoon tea, yum!

Murder! Tea! Recipes at the end of the book! What's not to like?

Tea & Treachery was a breath of fresh *ocean* air, especially with summer approaching. I'm not usually a cozy mystery reader, but am widening my reading to better recommend titles to customers. This book has great atmosphere, a lovely nod to English tea customs and uncanny investigator setting out to find the truth. I really enjoyed reading about the setting, history of the area, and the glimpses into the high tea practices. I wish we had gotten a little more romance before the book ended, but I enjoyed hanging out with the characters (especially grandma Rose). I would recommend this title for readers that want to escape to somewhere with a rich New England feel while witnessing a mystery unravel.

Bonus for me was the recipes at the end of the book- I really enjoy extras like this that enhance the reading experience. I wish I had known ahead of time that there was a recipe for English biscuits- I would have baked & enjoyed some to enjoy while reading. I definitely recommend a cup of tea while enjoying this one!

4/5 stars for me!

Tea and Treachery is a wonderful cozy set in the Cape Cod area. Lily Roberts manages a tea shop near her grandmother's bed & breakfast. Her traditional English teas keep her busy, as does monitoring the shenanigans of her grandmother Rose. When the property next to the B&B is potentially up for sale to a property developer, Rose is determined to stop the sale from going through. But is she guilty of murdering the developer? The detective assigned to the case from the rural police department has Rose in his sights, even though his partner, recently transferred in from Boston, wants to broaden the search. Rose enlists the help of Lily's friend Bernie to snoop on the investigation, causing Lily even more angst. Bernie is supposed to be writing a book, not enabling a little old lady! Great book, great resolution, looking forward to more!

Lily runs a tea shop in Cape Cod and "assists" her grandmother, Rose, with Rose's B & B (more than just assists if Rose gets her way). Rose prides herself on the sort of brutal honesty that can be abrasive, and she doesn't believe in keeping any opinions to herself or attempting to state them in a manner less likely to incite problems. So it's no surprise Rose is suspect number one when a real estate developer hoping to rezone property next to the B & B and tea shop is found dead. Not only had Rose threatened the developer in front of witnesses, the man died on Rose's property. Rose, Lily, and Bernie (Lily's best friend who is in town taking time off to attempt to write a novel) end up investigating because it's clear the detective is focused on Rose and ignoring other potential suspects.

This is the start of a new cozy mystery series. I enjoyed the setting and the supporting characters, particularly the little girl staying at the B & B, Bernie and Detective Amy Redmond, and look forward to seeing how they develop. I recommend Tea and Treachery for fans of cozy mysteries. 3.5 stars

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC. The opinions in this review are honest and my own. #cozymystery

I thought this was a good start to a new series. The characters were interesting, although I could not decide if the repartee between Rose and Edna was done in a friendly way or snarky.Lily gets drawn in to the mystery in a natural way, not a busybody way. It sets up for the next story nicely. there were a few times that I felt that the timing was off and not possible. I did want to go make some scones myself. There are some included recipes in the back of the book!

I was blessed with an Advanced reading copy of Tea and Treachery by Vicki Delany. This is a first in series and it is out in late July this year. This is the first in the Tea By the Sea series that I think you may find like me to be a new favorite. There is quite a bit to love right off the bat. A great setting, strong characters, an opinionated octogenarian, an overworked granddaughter, a tea room, a sassy cat, a loyal pup and a slightly off the wall best friend. I also liked that the back stories of the characters were not overly traumatic and the message of strong willed women I got from reading and enjoying the book. I am anxiously awaiting the second book in the series already!

Tea & Treachery by Vicki Delany is a new cozy mystery by a favorite author and I was thrilled to be able to read it.

Ms. Delany's comfortable writing style allows me to become fully engaged with the setting and the characters throughout the story. Lily has her hands full in Cape Cod as she cooks breakfast for her grandmother's B&B and bakes for her tea room, Tea by the Sea. The characters are developing nicely in this first book and I felt like I got to know them a little. Lily, Rose and Bernie/Bernadette are all smart, sassy. and determined women who take the investigation into their own hands. A smoothly paced plot with plenty of suspects, red herrings, twists and a exciting reveal made for a first rate beginning to this new series.

I'm a big fan of Vicki Delany's Sherlock Holmes Bookshop mysteries, so I was excited to read this first Tea by the Sea Mystery. I wasn't disappointed, as this was fun and has an intriguing story at its center. Set in a tea shop/B&B on Cape Cod, Lily and Rose and the supporting characters are all likeable, and the waterfront setting makes me want to take a trip out there immediately. Add that to the delicious tea shop menu that has made me want to eat all of the pastries, this is a perfect start to the series. I can't wait for the next one! Perfect for fans of Ellery Adams and Eva Gates.

Tea by the Sea, a traditional English tearoom on the picturesque bluffs of Cape Cod makes for a beautiful setting. Lily opened her tea room on her grandmothers B&B property. When the land next door is up for sale and to be rezoned into a resort it upsets Lily’s grandmother Rose. Rose is a no non sense type that tells it like it is.
When a man is killed on their property and associated with the land next door they must find the killer. To save their businesses and Roses freedom.
The characters, setting and mystery were wonderful. I can’t wait until the next adventure!

Lily Roberts runs a proper tea house on the grounds of her Grandmother Rose’s serene seaside B&B in Cape Cod. Rose’s quiet life is threatened when a developer is interested in buying the property next door for a hotel and golf course. Rose vows to fight the development, swearing it will happen over her dead body.

When the developer is found dead on the B&B’s beachfront Rose becomes the prime suspect. Rose and Lily’s BFF, Bernie, don’t trust the local detective assigned to the case and begin their own investigation, dragging a very unwilling Lily along for the sleuthing. Will The three of them be able to figure it out before Lily or Rose are picked picked before their time?

A great start to a new series by the author of the Sherlock Holmes bookshop mystery series. New England, and olde England, come together for a beautiful setting for this new series that features a grandmother and granddaughter duo. There is a lot of potential in this series and I can’t wait to see what the gals get up to next!

Through NetGalley, I received a free copy of TEA & TREACHERY (Book 1 of the Tea by the Sea Mysteries) by Vicki Delaney in exchange for an honest review. Lily Roberts, a professionally trained pastry chef, has recently left the big city, joined her grandmother Rose in running a Cape Cod B&B, and opened a traditional English tearoom. A man with binoculars begins appearing around town and appears to be stalking the ramshackle property adjacent to Rose’s B&B. Rose soon learns the binocular stalker is real estate developer Jack Ford, who has plans to convert Rose’s neighboring property into a golf resort. Rose, immediately, loudly, and publicly, protests the anticipated development; confronts Ford, the property owner, and the town council member promoting the rezoning; and puts other plans in motion to preserve her own property’s peace. When Ford meets his maker via a long drop from a tall cliff on Rose’s property, Rose is the obvious suspect. The detective’s extreme laziness and habit of fabricating evidence in order to avoid actual investigation is part of local lore, so Lily begins cultivating her own list of suspects. It looks like Lily will have to weed out the killer before the shady detective can replant prickly Rose in a penitentiary.

I thought this was a good start to a new series. I recommend this book to fans of Vicki Delaney and to fans of cozy mysteries featuring murder, seaside settings, B&Bs, bakeries, real estate, historic homes, and crooked officials.
