Eve Mallow, an obituary writer and amateur sleuth, is thrilled to learn that the adventurer Verity Nye is the special guest at the local village fair. However, when her idol falls out of an upper story window Eve has her suspicions that it may not have been an accident, so of course she must investigate.

This is my first introduction to the Eve Mallow series and I can’t wait to go back and read the the previous books. I loved that it is an updated twist on the classic British cozy with a modern day Miss Marple. Her occupation as an obituary writer is so clever. It solves the implausible amateur detective problem of constantly running across murders. It makes total sense! And as a dachshund lover, the addition of Gus made my day. The mystery itself was solid and all of the characters were well written. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Seagrave Hall. I can’t wait to order it for my library and think it will appeal to all of my cozy loving patrons.

I like Eve Mallow. Her job is to write obituaries, but she always ends up solving the mystery. She just can't help herself. She has to dig deeper in order to bring justice. By doing so, every time she finds herself eye to eye with the ruthless killer.

I also enjoy her interaction with her dog. The expressions on his face that she describes, I see them often on my dog's face too. It makes me smile even more.

This story takes place in the summer, while butterflies flutter around from one flower to the other. It seems like Eve does not only see them, but feels them as well. :)

The author also allows the veil over the past of a certain villager to be lifted...

Honestly, why do we need the police when sleuths like Eve are around?

This series is getting better and better. Book 3 is my favorite up till now. 5 stars.

Thank you, Clare Chase and Bookouture

Always a pleasure to read an Eve Mallow mystery. As an obituary writer she is in one of the best places to find why someone was murdered - and, of course, who did it. She lives a quiet life in a small village in Suffolk, but what a lot happens around her.

Loved it yet again.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher I read an advance review copy of the book. This review is voluntary, honest and my own opinion.

A third in the series featuring Eve Mallows obituary writer/ solver of murders. I really like the original idea of her job leading her to interview key witnesses and work out the truth, it seems to work naturally and helps her sleuthing seem believable. Many characters could have committed the crimes in this novel, and the bodies keep mounting up...just as they should in a good murder mystery!
The setting of an idyllic English country village adds to the shock of the multiple murders Eve investigates. It’s great to see recurring minor characters such as Viv,owner of Monty’s and the baker of most delicious sounding cakes! Jim the vicar, Robin the gardener, Simon the former love interest, and others, all reappear. I’m hopeful there will be more in this cozy mystery series!

Verity Nye, a famous diver who is engaged to Rupert, the heir of Seagrave Hall, falls to her death from a third floor window at a fair.
Was the fall accident or was Verity pushed?

Eve Mallow, an obituary writer/ amateur detective, who is present at the fair, witnesses the fall.
Her curiosity piqued, then and there she decides to write Verity’s obituary and along the way investigate her death.

There are suspects to interview, motives to find, secrets to unearth and a murderer to stop in this engaging and well written cozy mystery.

Thanks to the author, Bookouture and the NetGalley for my copy of the book.

A New Obituary.....
The third Eve Mallow mystery - Eve takes her first outing to the Village Fete, is witness to a death and is tasked with writing a new obituary. She soon finds herself knee deep in suspects as she dons her amateur sleuthing cap once again. Enjoyable new entry to this series, which gets better with each book, a likeable protagonist in Eve, a colourful cast of supporting characters and an entertaining storyline. A gentle mystery for an escapist read.

amateur-sleuth, writers, law-enforcement, England, murder-investigation, cosy-mystery, family-dynamics, friendship

Eve admired the adventuring woman engaged to the local gentry and was beyond stunned as she watched the young woman plunge from an upper story window to the grounds being prepared for a fete. But it was no accident. Eve was there and witnessed the landing but was dismayed when the CID sent the detective who always discounted her. Eve's gig writing is of obituaries for niche market magazines so she was in position to sleuth to find what really happened while performing the usual interviews and due diligence as well as her day job waitressing. She has friends to aid and abet her as well as her dachshund which is a good thing with the multiplicity of suspects! The plot is well executed, the characters engaging, and I loved it!
Although it is in a series background info is clearly present so there is no frustration on that score.
I requested and received a free ebook copy from Bookouture via NetGalley. Thank you!

A new occupation for me. I haven't read a book with a professional obituary writer before.
Eve is called on to write a professional obituary for a popular magazine after a murder of an adventure celebrity.
Local English village and the town gentry.
Village had some colorful characters and uppity ones.
Left me guessing.

Loved this book, exactly what I had hoped for....exciting and easy read, cozy mystery.
Eve Mallow, an obituary writer, is excited to be helping out at the village fair, being held at the beautiful Seagrave Hall. Verity Nye is a famous adventurer and she happens to be engaged to the heir of Seagrave Hall, and Eve hopes to meet her. When the two do meet, they seem to form a connection, an instant friendship if you will. So Eve was devastated when a short time later Verity has fallen from a window to her death. Tasked with writing her obituary, Eve also has an opportunity to nose around. After all seems more like a murder than an accident!
This was a great story, loved the characters, and the plot was really well written. For a cozy mystery, the killer was not so easy to guess.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
