“The Last Siren” by EE Sample is about music, love, death, and everything in between. Matthew St. James is a talented musician. Nadine is a girl with cancer. The two meet and everything changes. Matt finds a muse and Nadine finds a final spark. In the end, neither will ever be the same.

This book tells a beautiful story. A musician looking for something to live for finds a muse, a siren, who is fighting for her life. They both give each other strength and the motivation to do whatever comes next. For Matt, this is a music deal. For Nadine, it’s living her last days to the fullest. The two compliment each other and whether it’s love or infatuation the story only lasts long enough to see the good.

I think that it can be hard to do a cancer book well. Sample offers an interesting perspective and created a book that was never boring. I think the dialog could have used some work, sometimes it didn’t feel natural, but most of the moments were realistic. I also felt like some of the rockstar lifestyle felt unusual, but perhaps I just don’t know enough about it. There were moments I could have lived without.

Overall, I gave this book 3 stars. Thanks to NetGalley and Luminare Press for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!

Thank you so much for sending me a copy of this book. I was really interested because I love sirens but I was slightly disappointed with the book. I don’t know if I would recommend

Certainly not a bad read, but read just a little bit too “A Walk to Remember” for me. Felt a bit childish.

Oh my goodness! Two Did Not Finish-es in a row. I didn't get past the first five pages. Smarmy, trite, like the worst romance books you've ever read/

I found this book very easy to get in to, and I loved following its path. The story opens in a beach bar/club in Florida where a band, The Gospel, is playing a gig on the nightclub circuit. The Gospel’s lead is Eric, the keyboardist and frustrated songwriter is Matthew St. James. There are more band members, and a colorful crew of roadies, who flirt with the patrons, and staff alike. Matt, long- haired and handsome sees a young woman, Nadine, with a delicate and ethereal beauty and they strike up an unlikely friendship outside the club.
For the two weeks of a gig, the reader witnesses infighting among band members, one night stands, frequent alcohol and drug use, yet also a sweet love story. In the midst of daily jam sessions, and life in general, the band has highs and lows, struggling for fame and a record contract. The Florida club scene and the characters are totally believable and real - some likable, some angry, some flirty.
Without giving spoilers, let’s say there is religion, holistic medicine, faith, family and ambition as themes.
Two quotes stood out to me as constants in everyone’s lives: “Change comes with a price, and life always changes.” And “Time can’t be bought, borrowed, or banked.” Always good lessons to remember.
I loved the book beginning to end, and recommend it for those who don’t mind reading about sex, drugs, and rock’n’roll..
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley and my review is unbiased and my own opinion.
