God of Small Affairs
by Olga Werby

Absolutely one of the most compelling storylines I've read! A little confusing at first, but once I understood that I had to give myself permission to suspend disbelief, the story had freedom to go wherever it did. . .and that was interesting!

I love stories about how cultures different than the one I came up in treat the idea of “god” or “higher powers” – having loved the variety of Greek, Roman, cradle of civilization pantheons. Once I caught on that this was based on the Indigenous cultures of Alaskan peoples, I was in! I will leave a reader of this review to seek out the publisher’s description for specifics, and just give my response as one who has just finished reading author Olga Werby's God of Small Affairs.

This tale is filled with elements of fantasy, sci-fi, mystery and a little bit of horror – but it was more than that! It was an opportunity to think thoughts about the motivations of deity – what’s important when and what’s not. I loved the idea of a road-trip-turned-police-chase with a shape-shifting god, a follower who is devoted to a degree that might not be exactly helpful, and a town that had dissolved so far that it was a fatally certain example of one family’s hold on absolute power corrupting absolutely. Connecting with the characters I was meant to, I was happy when the ones that went down did. . .an alternative history. I fell for that label, completely. And heartily wished for such a thing to be real. Can you imagine? Best friends with gods? Helpful ones? Not standoffish, waiting for how things turn out before they check in?

Know that when you pick this book up, you are holding something completely different, and if you are flexible enough, it will be totally worth your time!

A Sincere Thanks to Olga Werby, Pipsqueak Productions and NetGalley for an ARC to read and review.
