History Smashers: Pearl Harbor features the wise writing and research of author Kate Messner, whose work I continue to add to my classroom library and recommended reading list. I loved the way words and pictures come together in this book to tell an engaging story, and how the book is grounded in fact. Though this early copy did not yet feature all of the images yet, what I was able to review was lovely.

This was an excellent nonfiction book that will keep students wanting to learn more about Pearl Harbor. This book is exactly what is needed in school libraries and classrooms today, books that are high interest and leave students wanting to learn more.

A great addition to this series. Enjoyed Kate Messner’s voice throughout this. Her take on history is interesting and highlights elements that aren’t traditionally told.

This is the second book I have read in the History Smashers series. I love how the author really sheds light on historical events that are often not covered in school. I actually did not learn about Pearl Harbor in school., so this was a very informative read for me. This series overall really appeals to both non fiction readers and also fans of graphic novels. I like this one especially since World War II is very popular with my patrons right now, and this definitely will peak their interest. I am excited to recommend this to history buffs and also reluctant readers. I cannot wait for more books in this series.

Not only is this title accessible, but it is colorful and informative. This book will grab the attention of my students with just the cover, and once they get inside, they will be hooked! Loved it!

History Smashes has the potential to become a great historical series for students to read. Having a renowned author lead these stories is a great way to tell often complex historical stories in a way that is understandable to students (and adults too.) The illustrations do a great job adding more information or illustrating key events from the text. Pssst. The students get the information twice this way! World War II is a very complex subject but the author does a job giving important information by not getting bogged down with historical information. Although the subject matter is Pearl Harbor, much more content is covered, including more things from recent history and how this event shaped it. This is the first book I read from the series but will be adding this and the rest of the series to my school library when they are available for purchase.
