Heads up! The synopsis is so thorough that you could almost skip the first 100 pages and not miss a thing so if you're someone that likes to go in blind, definitely avoid it. As a brief synopsis this book is about mirror twins - one who has it all and one who is envious. The suspense builds with some greed, lust, and deadly lies.⁣

If you skip some at the beginning don't skip anything at the end. After finishing I went back and read the ending again because my mind was blown and I had to confirm the ending 🤯 ⁣

Overall, I liked this one but it isn't a new favorite (4/5⭐) It was a slow burn and just a little too slow for my liking. Then it hit the ending and almost went too fast - the pacing could have been better throughout. ⁣

BOOK REVIEW: THE GIRL IN THE MIRROR

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I love a good twisted thriller that keeps you guessing until the last page! This story is about the race between two twins—Iris and Summer—to see who will get the family fortune by producing an heir kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. This one was a bit unique with the nautical setting and I was here for it!! Some aspects were truly disturbing and devious, but I think that’s what made it so binge-worthy!

If you enjoyed The Wife Between Us and Something in the Water, I think you’ll love this one!

The Girl in the Mirror, a twisty thriller, by debut author Rose Carlyle features 23-year old twins Summer and Iris. Their father died a very rich man, but one who wanted a legacy, and heir to carry on his family name. He left all his money to the first-born grandchild. Summer and Iris were the eldest of his seven children, but even they were only 14 at the time. Stipulations required that the parents of this child were married and of legal age prior to conception. With their eldest half-sister being four years younger, the only real competition was the other.

As Iris’s young marriage crumbles, Summer announces she and her husband are pregnant and asks Iris’s help in sailing the family yacht from Thailand to the Seychelles. As one might expect from a thriller at sea, things don’t go quite as planned and only one twin arrives at their destination. Carlyle cleverly leads the reader on, even as parts of her plot leave the typical thriller skepticism. As she draws you further and further in, your confidence in her story grows and then she takes some razor sharp turns that in the end might leave you thinking “Wow!” It rarely happens, but the end of this thriller took me by surprise.

Note: I received a copy of this book from William Morrow (in print and via NetGalley) in exchange for my honest thoughts.

Mirror image twins Summer and Iris are so alike on the outside, yet so different on the inside. When their father dies when they are in their teens, he leaves a will that stipulates that the child who bears an heir with his last name will inherit his millions. So it is a race against the half sisters to see who will inherit the fortune. Summer has an amazing life with her husband, stepson and career. Iris is fresh out of a divorce and needs to find a new job. So Iris agrees to help Summer get the family yacht from Thailand back to the Sechelles. Of course, the voyage does not go smoothly. This was a great mystery that kept me trying to guess what was happening. I did not expect the ending. If you enjoy Ruth Ware, then you will enjoy the Australian version--Rose Carlyle. I want to thank NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Traveling With T’s Thoughts:

This was book mentioned at Book Expo Speed Dating this year and when I heard about it- I knew I had to read it.

I used to wish I had a twin- but after reading The Girl in the Mirror, I’m glad I don’t have one.

What I Liked:

The cover!

The dynamic between Summer and Iris. It’s dark and very layered.

The secrets in the book! ❤

Bottom line: If stories of sibling rivalry are your jam, then check out The Girl in the Mirror!

Thanks to Book Club Girls, Scene of the Crime, William Morrow / Harper Collins and NetGalley for offering me this ARC. This book was a treat to read, full of greed, suspicion, cunning, treachery, deception, and a twisted plot.
Summer and Iris are nearly identical twins, but they are actually mirror images of each other. Summer has always been regarded as sweet and kind, and Iris is an afterthought. Ben is their younger brother, and is studying abroad in NYC.
The family discovers that their cunning father, Ridge, set up a statute in his will that the first of his children to marry and produce an heir would get $100 million. Not only did Ridge have these three children with second wife Annabeth, he also has additional children with his third wife, Francine. Francine is hopeful that her daughters will produce the heir. Annabeth hopes that one of her children will be the one to inherit the Carmichael estate.
Summer is in a perfect marriage to Adam, after his first wife died. They have a son (from the first marriage) who is sick, so Summer begs Iris to help them by sailing their yacht safely back to Australia from Thailand. Iris, who recently broke up with her husband, Noah, agrees. While on the yacht, tragedy strikes. What happens next is a twisted tale of deception.
I wasn’t completely surprised at the ending as I felt it was building to that all along, but I do think it was quite a well-spun tale!

Iris has always been the "lesser" twin. She has always looked at her twin Summer and wanted what she had. When Summer calls her and needs her help, Iris is right by her side. But when an accident occurs while sailing, Summer is killed so Iris believes she has no choice but to say she is Summer and Iris is the one that died. This starts an unstoppable lie. How long can Iris keep this up?
Wow this book was insane. I honestly loved every single minute of it. It was fast paced, it was unbelievable and it was out of control. I loved that we got the story through Iris's prospective. she was such an interesting character. As the 'unlikable" twin, she had such a chip on her shoulder, she couldn't see the good in her life. Plus you add in all the excitement and conniving that comes with a race for an inheritance and things get wild.

This was definitely one of my favorite psychological thrillers of the year. This one kept me on the edge of my seat and I loved the ending.

Such a wild book! Loved the soap opera feel to it.

The family patriarch dies, and leaves his multimillions to the first grandchild to be born. Since there are seven siblings, the race is on to be of legal age. marry and produce a heir. The first in the running are the oldest - twin sisters Summer and Iris.

The story is told from a POV of Iris, the bad twin as she proclaims to be. She feels like she is less than her identical sister - they are identical in every way, except that Iris is the mirror opposite image of Summer. There are also personality differences, and Summer seems to be the favorite. Always the more loved one. When the race for the money is found out, Summer proclaims she will not be part of it, and will only marry for love.

I don't want to go into any more details of the story, because it might give something up. It's definitely a page turner, entertaining book full of characters you want to loath. There's nothing likeable about any of them, but like with any drama, you want to see who comes out on top. A great debut, will add this author to watch for future titles list.

4.5⭐️

Identical twin sisters Iris and Summer are startlingly alike, but beyond what the eye can see lies a darkness that sets them apart. When Iris agrees to help Summer sail the family yacht across the Indian Ocean, she nurtures her own secret hopes for what might happen on the journey. But when Iris unexpectedly finds herself alone on the yacht and with a hundred-million-dollar inheritance on the line, she makes a decision that will change everything. ⁣

This was one of the most dark and twisted thrillers I’ve read in a while! As a twin, I love books about twins and I really enjoyed learning about mirror twins! I loved the setting, the characters, and the family rivalry (rich people behaving badly). This one kept me guessing and doubting the narrator throughout the book. I felt sorry for Iris’ character even though she made some questionable decisions. I’ll be thinking about the ending for a very long time. I can’t wait to read more from this author!⁣

Here's to a thrilling page turner about twins competing with their siblings and especially each other for their deceased father's fortune. I can't say I loved the characters, but I sure did root for one of the twins, and I sure did find myself surprised at the end. If you like some twisty family drama motivated by greed and complicated by not knowing who knows what, you are in for a solid escape read with The Girl in the Mirror.

So my friend’s review started with wow... and that really does sum up this book. A story that has a very Gone Girl or Girl on the Train vibe, you will not be disappointed. I do not want to give too much away, so I’ll basically recap the blurb.
Iris and Summer are twins... Summer has always been the favorite twin and when she tragically goes missing Iris has suddenly found herself playing the role of a lifetime.
You will most likely devour this debut by Carlyle, I know I did!

A twisty dark tale of two tqin sisters and to what lengths they will both go in hurting the other for money. I loved the creativeness of the plot. However, the ending left me wanting more.

Iris and Summer are identical twins. But, while Summer is self-assured with a handsome husband, Iris is insecure and unhappy. When Summer asks her sister to help sail their yacht to The Seychelles, Iris is happy to oblige. It will give her a chance to recover from a failed marriage and sail a boat that she dearly loves. All is well, until Iris finds herself mistaken for Summer and is swept into a life she had only dared to imagine.

The Girl in the Mirror has great bones and the writing is well-done. However, some of the story stretches the imagination and the reader has to be willing to accept some aspects that just don’t ring true. Overall the characters are unappealing and I found myself several times thinking that I didn’t care what happened to any of them. But, the thing that I found most off-putting was all the information about sailing. The amount of time dedicated to this aspect of the story was more than the story needed or I, as the reader, wanted. When the plot finally kicked in I was more than a bit relieved.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.

Received this ARC from William Morrow and Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. Wow! This book was a trip! Iris and Summer are twin sisters. Iris ends up assuming her sister’s identity after she goes missing in the ocean. She lives her life as a lie, fooling those around her. And then the twists begin and just keep coming. I had many theories about what really was happening all the way through the book. Not one of them was truly how it ended! I enjoyed the crazy mind twists and that I didn’t predict the ending. Recommend for those that like a psychological thriller.

First of all, thank you to Scene of the Crime and Net Galley for an advanced copy of this book. This was a book full of twists and turns. The mirror theme used throughout the book was very creative. The only thing that bothered me about the book was that I didn’t like any of the characters. I thought it was well written and the characters were well developed. The secrets and lies throughout the book though made it very entertaining. It is hard to summarize the plot because it is more than a story of twins sailing, or of an inheritance, or of how far a person will go to have a perfect life. It is. all of this an much much more.

I just finished reading The Girl in the Mirror by Rose Carlyle and thought it was an amazing story. Now after reading her online profile I can see where she got some of her storyline from. She herself is a lawyer and likes to sail boats. I like how she worked that into her writing. I am also surprised by some of the ratings that this book has been receiving because I thought it was great! The storyline grabbed my attention and I was so intrigued, that at one point I actually thought about going to the end of the book to see how it was going to play out. I’m so glad I didn’t! The very last page has a major twist that I honestly didn’t see coming and in a way it left me disappointed. Not due to the writing or in the authors way of surprising me, but really just because I favored the other twin and wanted her to win out. I think this was a great story and one I recommend to all who enjoy reading thrillers. I know I’m going to be keeping watch for other books by this author. I’d like to thank Scene of the Crime Early Read program and NetGalley for gIving me the opportunity to read, review and thoroughly enjoy this arc. All opinions here are my own. I’m giving this a 5 star rating.
