This is a classic for a reason. Man vs nature etc etc. I'm sure many high school kids grabbed this one to read because it was only 120 pages. Obviously I didn't so now I'm finally getting to it.

This was my first Hemingway. I can’t wait to read more of his work. This was a great place to start. Loving this new cover too.

You could call this book a classic, but that usually means an old style story that children are made to suffer through and that would be wrong. Ernest Hemingway has always had the reputation of a powerful story teller who easily brings a reader into the story on so many emotional levels. THE OLD MAN IN THE SEA is probably one of the best examples of his outstanding skill. A the story builds, you forget you are reading a fictional tale and can easily picture an aged fisherman just trying to catch a fish, any fish, when he hooks into the catch of his life. As he struggles to bring it to shore, the story of his catch becomes the story of his life. It doesn't matter how many times I have read this book, it still amazes me.

I'd never read this book and I truly regret it took so long. Epic story. Would highly recommend to lovers of classic literature.

Exceptional edition of Hemingway’s timeless tale which includes notes pertaining to the author’s research via his personal experiences as an avid Marlin fisherman in Cuba. The relationship between the boy and the old man and the symbolism of the challenges between the old man, the fish and the many sharks he encountered is a brilliant depiction of the choices we make in life and the obstacles and regrets we face even as we attain success.

Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for republishing this well loved American classic in nautical literature. I first read this in high school and was pleased to revisit this classic work. Re reading classics is a life goal that everyone should have. This was one of his finest works. I enjoyed the forward by his family and introduction by his grandchildren and the many extras included in this release. It was a pleasing way to re visit a classic book by such a phenomenal author.

I read The Old Man and the Sea back in high school. I love rereading books as I get older and seeing how my opinions of them change or if they still hold up. I really enjoyed rereading this Hemingway gem! It is a perfect, quick read for summer. This new edition has a beautiful new forward and introduction. This edition will be released July 21st. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a summer read or who likes reading classic books.

This book was given to me free in exchange for an honest review. #netgalley #theoldmanandthesea #ernesthemingway

The Old Man and the Sea: The Hemingway Library Edition is a reformat and re-release of the 1952 classic by Ernest Hemingway. Due out 21st July 2020 from Simon & Schuster on their Scribner imprint. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.

This is a powerful story written in direct and simple language. It won the Nobel Prize in literature (1954). I believe it's still a part of the educational curriculum for most young people growing up, so the actual novel isn't covered in the review; most people have read it. The entire original content is included in this edition. What sets it apart, though, is the inclusion of other content, appendices, notes, and supportive information which provides background, context, and a deeper understanding for the novel itself. Roughly 35% of the page content is bonus material. There are musings from Hemingway himself on sport, hunting, and philosophy. There is also a foreword and introduction provided by his descendants Patrick and Seán, respectively. The most interesting to me, however, was the inclusion of selective edits from the original manuscript showing some of the iterations which occurred during the evolution of the final novel we read today.

All in all, the Hemingway Library edition books are worthwhile and interesting for the additional material in addition to their value for the books themselves.

Five stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

The first time I read The Old Man and the Sea was freshman year of high school. I recently won a free e-ARC from NetGalley, which is why I chose to revisit it. But I am always happy to do re-readings because I like comparing and contrasting my notes*. You can read a book one way, and have a completely different experience reading it again. There are so many different ways to read a book, and each reader has a different perspective and interpretation of it. You may even have multiple perspectives of a book you have read before, because you may be a different person than you were the first time you read it. This is true for me, because I was so young and have grown so much from the first time I read The Old Man and the Sea.

What stood out to me on this reading was the dichotomy of male versus female. Like the other great nautical fiction (think The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Melville's Moby-Dick, Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, and Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness) themes of water and emotions are touched on: the male figure struggling against the female powers of nature, the masculine (man) dealing with 'feminine' emotions (water).

And the important books, the good ones, are the ones that people keep discussing. As long as a book is relevant, it remains important. The Old Man and the Sea remains relevant and relatable, which is why it is such an important classic.

I'm not going to review the story itself because everybody knows it's a classic. This version however is a 'deluxe' version featuring not only the original story but other ephemera. It contains a foreword by one of Hemingway's sons and a lengthy introduction by one of Ernest's grandsons which puts the story in context with Hemingway's life at the time he was writing this incredible story. Other includes writings include his Nobel Prize Acceptance speech, his personal checklist of sharks that may be found in the waters off Cuba (and whether or not they are dangerous to humans!), a previously unpublished short story and some of the edits he made between the initial composition of "The Old Man And The Sea" and the final version.

In past years the Hemingway Estate has been reissuing all of his classic works in this 'deluxe' fashion with additional material. For this book, the additional material is not substantial in length (and the story itself is very short) but it is a welcome addition to the canon and does a great job of placing the underlying story in its proper historical context. If you're a fan of the book--and, let's be honest, who isn't--you will definitely enjoy this additional written material.

A lovely ebook version of a classic! The story drags but, well, it's Hemingway. Reviewing the content seems a bit moot for a work this old! LOL.

Hemingway writes about a subject that bores me, and yet the book charms me. I loved it because it was outstanding, and beautiful.

The novella tells the story of Santiago, an elderly fisherman who has not caught a fish in nearly three months. He is no longer strong, nor lucky, but remains hopeful and determined. He takes his little boat farther out to sea from the harbor and catches a giant fish which he is not strong enough to pull in and so the fish takes control. What follows is four days at sea, encounters with sharks, injury, and continued hope. And it is beautiful.

There are themes of courage, honor, struggle, suffering, old age and loneliness. It is about loss and about winning. Redemption and transfiguration.

This is a gripping and charming story, and I am so glad to have finally read it!

As someone who teaches The Old Man and the Sea, I requested a copy, not to read the story, but to check out the additional features. I was impressed with the pieces of writing that were added to the text, including personal pieces from both Hemingway's son and grandson. I also enjoyed the additional short story. I will be buying a copy to add to my classroom so that I can share this information with my students. Thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
