I am usually a sucker for books set in distinctive time periods, but I couldn't get into this one. The plot sounded interesting but the various POVs made it difficult to follow.

This one started out slow. Once you get into it it’s a really good story.

Thank you to the Publisher and Netgalley for the advanced e-reader copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

This is a confusing book. I got confused by the amount of POV's, and who they were. If there were less, it would have been fine. I honestly felt that it should be edited, as there were way too many storylines in this book.

This was a compelling coming of age tale set in a time that is widely depicted in the media, but one I’ve never read about from the perspective of a child. While the beginning was a little slow and it took me a while to get into it, overall I enjoyed the book as a whole and the authors writing

The story is really good, it's just a slow read at first. My mom grew up in the 60s and from the stories I've heard I feel like I can relate to the characters.

Took me back to a time that I knew very little about and I experienced it through the eyes of a child as she grew up during this time. Well told. I found it engrossing, fascinating and different. So if you're looking for something a little different this is the book for you. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Happy reading!

A fascinating exploration of a strange and exciting time in US history, 12 year old Alice arrives in Berkeley unprepared for the massive changes and freedom that she meets there. This book has an evocative feel and a shocking narrative that sees Alice follow her own path with dramatically reduced adult insight or guidance.

Alice has some outrageous adventures for a young girl who has been emotionally abandoned to find her own way in life, as a collection of adults finding their own way in massively shifting times neglect her and affect her life to varying degrees of harm.

The novel is well-written and the characters evocative of a very particular time and place, I was totally immersed in the story as Alice grows and develops in a world in which freedom has many different outcomes.

Supposedly this story is about a young woman's coming-of-age in the late 60s in Berkeley. It seems it's about the entire family, recently having located from Washington D.C., and their individual changes during that time. Although politically charged with the groups and individuals who made history during that era, I found the story very typical of many familial tales and unique to that time.
