The Life She Left Behind by Nicole Trope is a gripping family drama that will immediately get under your skin. There is a sense of uneasiness that permeates the narrative from the very first pages, and you will be on the edge of your seat for the duration.

A nearly seven year old girl, known as Little Bird to her family, is living a nightmare, witnessing the unrelenting abuse of her mother at the hands of her father, and living under his obsessive need for control. Little Bird is also wary of her brother who, at six years her senior, is also showing the disturbing tendencies of their father. Fast forward twenty eight years, and a woman named Rachel is enjoying her life with husband, Ben, and much-loved daughter, Beth. But sometimes, it seems, that no matter how far you go, you can never outrun the past.

This is an absorbing and emotional read that had me fully invested from the very start. The alternating perspectives and timelines are cleverly interwoven to create a compelling picture, and I could not read quickly enough to discover how it would all mesh together. I am very much looking forward to reading more from this author. 4.5 stars

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC,

Not sure how I feel about this book... There seemed to be a lot going on in the beginning, different people speaking I found it really hard to get into it. But turned out it was a really good read and I will be reading it again at some point!
