This is a short story about how every kid is different and yet, perfect.

I loved the illustrations, the way the writing flows and the whole message behind it. I also loved how inclusive it was, mentioning kids from different cultures and kids who have disabilities.

I didn't like however how it opens with a Bible verse and ends with questions about the relationship between children and god (among other questions that are not as bad.)

As a kindergarten teacher, I would suggest skipping the Bible verses and the questions at the end. Celebrating our differences is great, but indoctrination isn't, plus, not everyone believes in the Bible god.

Other than that, yeah, it's lovely and I think kids will love it too.

This is a sweet book about being different but also all being made in God's image and having the same feelings and emotions that God has given each of us. I think some of this went over my kids' heads because they didn't know what it even was (like the wheelchair - I don't think they have ever actually been around one to know what it's for) so I had to stop and explain before going on. However, I don't see that as a problem since the book already encourages further discussion at the end anyway. The illustrations were excellent and brightly colored for catching children's eyes.

Disclaimer: I'm not religious, so I wasn't sure if this was a book "for me" or better suited to someone else. I was pleasantly surprised that this is a universal message, and only the last page is really bible-oriented. It's a simple and lovely story suitable to all people about how we all feel the same things no matter how we are different.

Different Like Me by Xochitl Dixon is my new favorite children's book for so many reasons. This is a powerful rhyming book for young children to teach diversity, differences, and being unique. The author includes a variety of emotions, abilities, and races all with the similar theme: God made every kid different and special. I love how the author expresses the beauty of differences while showing that there are similarities as well. I definitely would love to add a copy of this book to my kindergarten classroom library as well as my home library. Also, the illustrations are beautiful and connect very well with the content being explained.

Thank you to Netgalley and publishers for providing an advanced digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is a great little book about diversity. Explaining how everyone is different from the inside and out. Teaching kids that there are different languages including sign language, skin/eye/hair colour, some use a wheelchair and others have service dogs, kids all have different likes for activities, foods, etc. In the end children all feel the same - happy, hurt, sad, excited etc. God made everyone different and that is okay.

The book starts and ends with a bible verse but isn't necessarily for only Christian families. There is a Question section at the end that would be great for church groups or families home with a Christian background to help teach Bible verses to young children.

I loved the artwork and that this book isn't just about ethnic background. They include children with disabilities and that children like different kids of foods and activities.

I give this a 5 out of 5 stars as a great learning tool.

We may look different and have different likes and talents, but ultimately we are all the same inside. A poignant lesson for child and adult alike! This book beautifully illustrates how God’s creativity shines through in mankind. Some of us are tall. Some are short. Some have red hair. Some like pizza while others like sushi. Some are artistic while others are athletic. The illustrations masterfully show the rainbow of skin colors and the diversity of what it means to be made in God’s image. And while this book exquisitely explains our differences, it concludes with reminding us that we have more in common than it seems on the outside. Inside we are all the same. When I read this book with my son, he loved the illustrations and connected strongly with the prose. There is an additional “for the parents/teachers” section at the end of the book for extension activities. This is a book every home needs.

Thank you for the opportunity to review this book. All views are honest and given voluntarily.

Cute illustrations and a diverse range of characters doing normal kid things together. Premise is by no means new or unique, but there is added religious layers including the back section of engaging questions for parents/teachers and children. Illustrations are quite lovely, I always like to see the greenery and modernized versions of cartoonish characters. Overall, just your typical diversity is good book!

The timing of this books publication is so amazing. As a mother of small children, the message of this book struck a chord and made my heart sing. I love how the author wove scripture into the beginning and end of this book to tie the message together. God has bigger plans than we may ever know and it starts with each of us being individually and wonderfully made. The illustrations and rhythmic tone makes this a wonderful read for kids young and old!

Great book about people not only looking different but also being differently-abled. I loved that this book included a wheelchair bound child and a blind child. No matter what we look like, we all feel the same - all get worried, happy, etc. Lovely story.

I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read it to my kids! This book has a wonderful message and adorable illustrations. I like how the book discusses all kinds of differences- physical differences (including disabilities) and personality differences, and then talks about the way we are all the same.

This is a cute story to teach children that everyone is different but also the same in the way that they have feelings and that God made each and every one of them. The words had a lyrical movement to them. The illustrations were great. I would recommend this book for kids ages 3-5.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book for my honest opinion.

It's so important to make children understand the differences that prevail in organisms. It just makes it easier for them to accept these differences as they grow up.

The book talks about all types of differences in a fun rhyming manner, making it Interesting and Useful for Children. It mentions Biblical quotes to underline that all beings are equal. The book talks about appearing different yet feeling the same things!

I loved the Beautiful illustrations which made the book all the more engaging!
This book will definitely make a great addition to a child's collection!!

This is such an adorable book that reminds us that we are ALL made in HIS Image. That we are all unique and beautiful. I read this book to my 9 and 7 year old boys. It was the perfect book to read to them while all this chaos is going on. One reminder that I made sure to drive home is: We may all look different on the outside, but God designed us all to have the same set of emotions on the inside.I always tell my children, that God gave you many talents and made you like noone else - you want to embrace that. What you do with your talents is your gift to God. This book is beautifully illustrated, it has amazing pictures.
I received a copy of this book through the Celebrate Lit blogging program, all thoughts are my own.

I love this sweet children’s picture book with its endearing, well-written rhyming text and colorful illustrations of a variety of children. The message is beautifully presented and is so needed in our current day. The book is one I would like to give to every child, and grownups will enjoy it too. Based upon truth and biblical principles, it offers inclusive words rather than divisive ones. Hopefully, it can bring joy and will help everyone feel good about themselves as well as model proper attitudes toward others. We see children of various colors and abilities, including one in a wheelchair and a blind boy, enjoying life together in the pictures that accompany the words. And a loving dog adds delight too. You can tell this comes from the author’s heart. And the last page offers advice to adults and questions to discuss with children. Well done, Xochitl Dixon! I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.

I have to say that everyone is unique. But then, we know this right? We’re all taught this from a young age. But are we really taught to see everyone the same? Are we taught to look at others who aren’t as smart or who have a different skin color than us as different or less than?

In our household, we believe everyone has the opportunity to be something unique and special. Some people might throw away their opportunity to parrot others, but they get that opportunity.

This is a sweet children’s book. It’s going to be staying on our shelves for the foreseeable future. We live in an area that is not very racially diverse. It’s very rural midwest states if that helps you picture what it’s like. But my children have friends of different skin tones and don’t see them in different ways. They’re all their friends.

Cute book. I highly recommend you find a copy and get it on your shelf today! I also encourage you to recommend this book at your library. The more times someone requests a book the more likely it is that a library will get it on their shelves.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Different Like Me is a different kind of kids book because it teaches children that no matter how different they may be, it’s ok. That we are all unique to God, and He still loves us just as we are. Sadly, there is so much division in the world today, it’s easy for kids and adults alike to struggle with this issue. This book is for our world today, and I think it should be in every household, school, daycare, church and anywhere else children may be.

Author Xochitl (So-Cheel) E. Dixon Dixon opens her heart and speaks to each of us through the wonderful and adorable characters in this book. I love each of them and their differences. She includes scripture in the book as well as discussion questions to help kids open up and share their feelings if they want to. Especially anyone who has disabilities or anything different than others.

And I can’t forget Bonnie Lui’s amazing illustrations. They are absolutely adorable and fit with the story so perfectly. I love that she includes about every way a child may be different. And how special is this, when a child can actually see a picture of their different self! Everything in this book is just wonderful in every way! This book is a 5 plus stars all the way!

A special thanks to the author/publisher and netgalley for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Different Like Me is a very timely book. In today’s world which is so full of division we need things to draw us together. Xochitl Dixon does an excellent job in this picture book to point out that everyone is different, yet we are all created in God’s image. Her text brings out many of the ways in which people are different from each other - appearance, abilities, ways of getting around, and more. We are all different in some way.
This would be a great book for a teacher or librarian to read to a class, especially a class where one member is being made fun of for something they have no control over. I appreciate the fact that Xochitl Dixon includes some discussion questions for parents and teachers to use with their kiddos.
I love Bonnie Lui’s illustrations. They go well with the text. They are childlike and will definitely appeal to the children the book is intended for. I can envision little ones sitting and looking at this book on their own once an adult has introduced them to it. Different LIke Me would be a great book to include in a Mock Caldecott unit.
Different Like Me would be an excellent addition to the picture book section of a K-12 Christian School library. Pre-school through lower elementary children will enjoy it.
I want to thank Celebrate Lit for the complimentary copy of Different Like Me. This is my honest review.

I was excited to read this book because it is exactly what we need right now. A positive look at children they may look different but are all the same. The illustrations are beautiful and easy to keep a child's attention. I love the way the story rhymes and is easy fir children to follow along. The message is simple yet the World struggles as different to some mean not as important.
We all hurt, laugh, play and love the same regardless of the color of our skin. Some may have disabilities but they are the same as everyone else. The book is a great tool to use to teach children that we are all the same. I loved how the author includes children wearing glasses, in a wheelchair, or other differences all playing together. Children are innocent and don’t judge others because they may look or act differently.
I would recommend this book to every parent, grandparent, church, daycare and school. I will be purchasing a copy of this book for my grandchild. The author includes questions at the end of the book for parents or teachers to use to discuss the lesson taught in the book. Come experience a group of children having fun together as they make friends and experience the message that God loves us.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

In the midst of what it feels like an overwhelming storm of new books addressing racial inequality and social justice, we encounter Different Like Me by Xochitl Dixon. Xochitl gives us a breather by delivering a Biblical perspective for diversity, focusing on how God created us all and without compromising God given standard for justice, love, and righteousness.

My first fear when seeing the book was that the it would try to sell us identity politics nor so-called Evangelical Liberalism. I am happy that that is not the case.

I am very thankful that the book DOES address what the leftist are neglecting to address in their self-righteous crusade for social justice, and that is those who with special needs.

My only critique to this book would be that the gospel of Jesus Christ as the only one thing that demolishing the dividing wall of hostility between people groups is not present. Yet, I understand that that is not the goal of this book since it only focuses on Creation.

Both parents and children will benefit from reading this book. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to have a taste of what Biblical diversity is.

I would proudly sell it in my store and will definitely buy it for myself to read to my sons.
