Beautiful, vibrant celebration of diversity and common humanity. Although it is clearly a Christian text with Bible quotes in the beginning and end, this book is really universal and interfaith. I was truly moved by Xochitl Dixon's letter to parents and teachers at the end of the book. The discussion questions are great and I imagine very useful for anyone trying to approach very complicated topics with children.

A lovely timely book. Very inclusive with lovely illustrations, that show another story beyond the words.
A great conversation starter.

Different Like Me is an awesome book with a great massage that we need right now.. The illustrations are very colorful! I love that they included a discussion guide for parents and teachers to us. I plan to purchase this for my school library so that teachers can share this book with their classes.

This was a very cute book to read, which is one of the reasons why I loved it. But the message of the book was such a good one for times like these. The message of diversity and that everyone is different but unique, was simple enough for young readers but also well presented.

This book was not for us. We hadn’t realised it was religious. We like the overall diversity message, but really didn’t care for the end, sorry. Great book overall though and lots of people will love it.

This is a simple but charming little book. I really like seeing the more diverse christian books popping up.

The illustrations are fun and accompanied by simple rhymes and repetition. Repetition is so important in early literacy and is used very well in this picture book. "I look all around me and what do I see? So many kids who are different to me" repeated throughout until the end where it instead says "I look all around me and what do I see? So many kids, not so different from me."

Cute and heartwarming.

Given the time in our nation I was almost moved to tears reading this story. It has such a simple beautiful message -- "I look around and what do I see? God made every kid different and special like me!" This book starts out by pointing out unique differences in all the children. (This story is very inclusive of children of all different races, and even children with special needs.) Then at the end it defines how we are all the same. It is a lovely story written through the eyes of a child. The illustrations are beautiful and it has questions in the back that would guide parents and teachers in discussion.

This is a great book for these times. As a parent with bi racial kids and special needs I cannot recommend this book enough.
This book is appealing for kids with the big colourful illustrations and it rhymes!
Thank you Netgalley for the advanced copy.
This is a good tool for parents, schools and even churches to help encourage kids to be their own unique selves and God loves them no matter what.

Though the book is clearly well-intentioned, the bible verse with which it opens immediately and unfortunately sets a tone of trans-exclusiveness.

In the society we live in today, this book is a HUGE REPRESENTATION of it!! Also, this story needs to be heard by all children so they understand that it is okay to be different. I love how the story describes physical appearances as different, but when it comes to feelings and emotions, all children are the same. Everybody has feelings, no matter how they look or where they come from. We all feel happiness, sadness, angry, frustration, and excitement. This really helps children feel more confident about themselves, and understand that it does not matter how they look, because it is the inside that matters more. This really helps people struggling with identity issues and insecurities. It is actually a good story for all age groups. I LOVED THIS STORY!

This book begins by emphasizing the many ways in which the narrator notices differences among him and his friends -- how they look, how they talk, their likes and dislikes. Then, the book shifts its focus to the uniting factor of feelings -- and just how children share the same emotions and feelings.

I like this book, especially for it's beautiful illustrations. I think that in using it in a classroom of young children the teacher should be explicit about the "differences" that are introduced in the book so as not to promote a colorblind orientation.

A wonderfully illustrated Christian story that helps teach all of us to embrace the beauty of diversity in each of our lives.

I have to begin this review by saying that I was already sold on the idea of the book due to the nature of the issue it was addressing. I truly believe that we need to teach kids about celebrating our differences right from the get-go and this book stands up to that. If we strip ourselves of all judgement, the world would be so much more kinder and compassionate and most of all, we will all flourish as our authentic selves with no fear of being judged, ridiculed or bullied.
The book has amazing illustrations that are very life-like, so plus points for that too! LOVED IT!

Name: Different Like Me
Author: Xochitl Dixon
Illustrator: Bonnie Liu
Genre: Children Fiction
Age: +3
Review:
This is a children book aimed to teach young readers about the uniqueness and diverse group of people. It teaches how we all are unique in our own way. We are all different in many ways: hair color, skin, hobby, personality, etc but we are all joined by this thread of oneness. God has made us different but one. It is a good book to teach children about acknowledging our differences and accepting everyone's uniqueness. It teaches us the concept of "Vashudeva Kutumbakam" which means the whole world is our family.
It also speaks about acceptance towards physically challenged children, which is w great change for the children. I really appreciate the author's intent on writing this wonderful book.
The book contains bright colourful illustrations, which is another great thing about this book.

This delightfully-illustrated book follows the efforts of a mixed group of children as they work co-operatively to carry a fish-shaped kite to a festival. The rhyming prose whimsically explores the concept that, while we might look different from each other in a variety of ways, express ourselves differently, and have varying strengths and weaknesses, we all have a role to play in recognising the value in others, being kind and working together. The illustrations feature children representing a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds (also illustrated by their food choices in the picnic scene!), and several differently-abled children. As this is a relatively short picture-book format, the depth into which the book goes is understandably minimal, but there is a useful section for parents and teachers at the end of the book, for use in prompting further discussion about diversity.
Different Like Me is published by Our Daily Bread Publishing, and thus not unexpectedly features opening and closing Old Testament verses (Genesis 1:27 and Psalm 139: 13-14 respectively), which sadly is likely to limit its circulation to audiences who practice either Jewish or Christian faith. While I don't in any way dispute the ethos of Our Daily Bread in including overtly religious content, I feel a little sad that this delightful book, with its universal message is unlikely to bridge the gap into the secularised and multi-faith mainstream. I would love to see a book that celebrates the differences and similarities between children of all faiths (or none), embracing the universal truths that govern us all.
Thank you to author Xochitl Dixon, illustrator Bonnie Lui, Our Daily Bread Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to review an advance copy of this title. #NetGalley
