An old fashioned ghost story. I loved the mystery and how there was a book within a book. It was a quick, easy read and I enjoyed each minute!

I love reading books set in old houses or hotels, so of course I had to read this one. Daniel Price, along with his daughter Caitlyn move to Nightingale House in Maine after the death of his wife in a car accident. Soon after strange things start happening. Daniel keeps hearing a dripping sound, but can't find the source of it while Caitlyn finds an imaginary friend that only she can see. Then the whispers start, "I can't sleep" and Daniel starts to have terrifying, and incredibly realistic nightmares...

Deliciously creepy, Nightingale House will keep you up until all hours. It is quick and easy to read, and it's one of those books where you just have to read one more chapter. I recommend this book to all lovers of mysteries and things that go bump in the night.

My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Nightingale House is a terrific story. It starts with a grieving family making a new start and slowly starts to build into a really creepy, eerie ghost story. It doesn’t go all out to try and shock and scare, but gently builds into a fascinating story.

An engaging story that immediately pulls you into the modern world of Daniel and the historical world of Rebecca and the Carringtons and intricately merges the two worlds. It’s a blend of mystery, chilling and thrilling suspense, and historical fiction, with an underlying tone of devoted love and sadness. Very unique. Really enjoyed the perspective of how the story was told. It will make the hair on your arm stand up and give you chills

I got this book from netgalley so it is a digital arc. It was not a long story and the writing was nothing complicated, very simple, and straightforward English which I like. Because it was simple to read, the pacing seems to be moving fast. The scenes are very short which moves the story along quickly. You can finish this book in a day if you keep going at it because it was a fast read kind of book. It didn't feel like it was 384 pages. It seems shorter as the story moves very quickly. The storyline was nothing new and not very original and has the same elements of other ghost stories. But is a fun book to read, nevertheless.

This story is told only from the perspective of the protagonist, Daniel Price. I feel that this book could be better if the author writes about Caitlin's Price's perspective as a child as well. Caitlyn is Daniel Price's 8 years old daughter who has lost her mother in a car accident. As I read, I hardly know much about Caitlyn and how she thinks and feels because the story is not told in her perspective. It would be much more interesting for the story and would give it a bit more depth if the readers can learn more about Daniel Price's daughter as she was the one who has an imaginary friend and has lost her mom.

Overall I enjoyed this book. The ending was expected, no twist, but good. I thought Daniel Price would resume his one-off relationship with Caitlyn's teacher, Denise, but it didn't happen which was sad. It would be a nice touch to the ending. Overall, I just have to say that the style of writing suits me and I love it.

I was really happy to be chosen to read this book. I love a good ghost story and expecially if it takes place in a grand old spooky house like Nightingale House... The cover is sublime!
I started reading yesterday evening and finished the book just now. I was hooked!
Creepy, sad, historical, and a little bit of a detective vibe going on. I loved it!
A story like this often has the cliché ghost story elements. Creepy noises, things that apear or dissapear, visions... But i did not have a cliché kind of feeling with this story. Everything was verry well balanced in a way the story didn't get predictable or corny.

Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book as a ARC. This is a honest review.

This book is another fine thriller with a sprinkling of the paranormal, and the short chapters are indicative of the overall fast pace of the story. This book grabbed my attention in the beginning and held me hostage until the The last page was read. The plot and subplots were well thought out and well presented. The characters came alive and jumped off the pages. I love a book that I just cannot put down once I have started them and this was one of those, I was up all night reading it.

Just when you think you have it figured out, something else would happen and you would have to start second-guessing yourself. I was often breathless with anticipation and felt chills running up and down my spine. The ending was perfect and it gave me goosebumps.

Thanks Netgalley and Harper Collins HQ Digital for the ARC!

Recently widowed writer Daniel and his daughter Caitlyn move into Nightingale House looking for a fresh start. But Nightingale House is restless and it isn't long before Daniel is having strange dreams and Caitlyn's imaginary friend doesn't appear so imaginary after all 🙈Is Nightingale House trying to tell them something?😬

4⭐- A great, jaunty scare that's not gory, more a classic style haunted house horror, which I'm a total sucker for! The story is presented from two angles, one present Nightingale House and the other set 100 years previously, which always works very well for this type of horror, and the author knits it nicely together.

This is a great haunted house/ghost story. It follows the usual roles, conventions and tropes of the haunted house story but is just executed in such a lovely way and has some really unique details. It’s a very vivid and deeply felt story about a father dealing with guilt over the loss of his wife. I am somewhat particular about my ghost stories - the Haunting of Hill House and its ilk are my favorites - and this author lives up to my high expectations by honoring the traditional ghost story in a modern setting with writing and atmosphere worthy of the masters. I enjoyed every minute of this page turner, which was beautiful, engrossing and scary. Frech just nailed the emotional and allegorical aspects of the ghost story, which to me is really just as important as the scares (which he also nailed!). Thankful to NetGalley for turning me onto Steve Frech, as I will definitely read his other books. 4.5 stars rounded up for this enjoyable read.

Thanks to HQ Digital, NetGalley and Steve Frech for those ghost story perfect for quarantine, in exchange for my honest review.

A suddenly-rich novelist buys a big old house. As his wife has recently died in an horrific accident, spookiness is bound to come knocking on the big old door.

Neither the author or his young daughter can settle in this dream home. Memories of his dead wife haunt the narrator and the little girl makes up imaginary friends. As all old houses have creaks and groans, the writer has to decide whether the shadows and thumps are coming from his grief, imagination or something more supernatural.

There are two stories, one told in the present in the first person from the author's perspective. It is written in a casual style, which makes it very current and easy to read. The second is from the point of view of a teenage girl from 1900. Here the style is also first person in a diary format but also very modern. The attitudes are not as they would have been in 1900, especially concepts such as accountability and responsibility in relation to a married man showing an interest in a teenage girl. This did not come across as authentic.

The theme is one of coming to terms with grief, rather than a ghost story. An enjoyable if unoriginal story, not in the realms of Stephen King or The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson with regards to atmosphere and suspense. Nightingale House is an engaging and familiar mystery with a bit of a disappointing ending.

For easy distraction reading, this slow-burn mystery will do the trick.

I frequently read haunted house literature, so this title had a lot to live up to. As such, it ended up in the "meh" category for me. The characters and action are pretty standard fare for novels of this type. I found myself more interested in the journal entries than anything happening in the present day.

I give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Synopsis: Daniel Price is an author who loses his wife in an accident. He and his daughter Caitlyn moved to the Nightingale House, hoping for a new beginning. But the house has secrets, and Not long after Daniel and Caitlyn moved, there were odd cold feeling in the master bedroom, mysterious water dripping sounds, and whispers echoing through the corridors. What secrets does this house have? And how can Daniel solve a hundred plus mystery?

Here I go again, drawn to stories that kept me up all night. Daniel and his daughter are both still grieving om losing a wife and a mom, and then they have to deal with the sinister force surrounding their new house. A bit too much of torture, doesn't it? I couldn't put this book down, and it’s creepy and intriguing. Daniel’s love for her daughter is heartwarming. Unraveling a hundred plus-year-old secrets wasn't easy but not impossible, and it was revealed in a frightening but fantastic way. I love all the characters, and the narration between past and present is excellent. I enjoyed reading it.

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 3
One House
Two Families
And a deep dark secret that could destroy them all.

Nightingale House tells us the story of the house from the present and the past. We get to follow Daniel Price and his daughter Caitlyn in the present. A young family trying to learn to live with the loss of Nicole, Daniel’s wife and Caitlyn’s mother. We also follow the Carrington Family who lived in the house back in 1900.

This was my first book by Steve Frech. I enjoyed the book but it was a little predictable for me. But all in all it was a good book and I enjoyed the journey of the story. If you like a good haunting story you will enjoy this book.

Do not start reading this at night! It’s an old fashioned ghost story and one of the best. It should definitely be made into a movie and, since 5 stars is the most I can give, Nightingale House gets 5 supernatural stars.

After the tragic death of his wife Nicole, writer Daniel Price and his daughter Caitlyn move into the stately, historical Nightingale House for a new start. Daniel is looking forward to using the “writer’s room” in the house and hoping the Caitlyn will quickly make friends in her new school. From the first night, things go terribly wrong. Daniel can’t sleep in the master bedroom and takes to the sofa downstairs. Caitlyn’s only new friend is the mysterious, somewhat vindictive Katherine. The slowly building suspense in the story is cut by a more than a century old diary written by the young daughter of the town pharmacist describing small town life and her girlish dreams.

And the suspense does build! Desperate to protect his daughter, Daniel tries to understand the evil that lives in Nightingale House. Until the final pages, it eludes him. Fueled by grief, murder, betrayal and hope, Nightingale House is a great read, a book you won’t want or be able to put down. Enjoy!

This is definitely a page turner. I love this thrilling story - I couldn’t put it down! It will definitely give you chills and make you listen a little more closely to those bumps in the night. The author pulls you in from page one and never lets you go. You feel such a great affection for the main characters and their emotions feel so raw and real. I can’t wait to read more from this author.

I went into this book mostly blind and expecting horror. First I want to say this is not horror. It is a ghost story, and a well written one at that.

I really fell in love with the father/daughter relationship between Daniel and Caitlin. Daniel is dealing with the grief of his wife’s sudden death and relocating into a new house. The house was purchased prior to the accident that killed his wife so moving in is bittersweet for Daniel and Caitlin.

The story is filled with creepiness, it’s very atmospheric, and the house gave off all the gothic vibes. Imaginary friends that just might ghosts always freak me out a bit. I don’t want to give too much away but if you’re looking for a ghost story with a twist pick this book up.

It’s fast paced and highly bingeable, which tends to be my favorite kind of book. It gave me some serious Whisper Man vibes so if you liked that book you’ll probably enjoy this one too!

Thank you @Netgalley and @hqdigital and #stevefrench for an advanced copy of the book for my honest review.
