I enjoyed reading as each characters struggled to get through the occupation by Germans. Some of the characters survived but bore the scars of the violence ,hunger, and tragedy of loss. Some of the character,however..we difficult to believe . The angry actions of the grandmother against a Nazis soldier was difficult for me to believe but the author used it to continue the story . The actions of Yuri to save Mark were also a little difficult to believe . Finally, the hatred one sister had for the other disappeared in the last chapter with no explanation. These were some of the flaws but the story was average . It'.s not the quality of The Book Thief but a good story.

This historical fiction takes place in Ukraine. It is about a family running for their lives from Hilter's Army. It is an intriguing read full of heartache, sacrifice for family, forgiveness, and love.

It was the first book I've read about Ukraine during WWII and I found it to be very intriguing. I loved how the family stuck together and did everything they could to stay safe. It is perfect for historical fiction fans!

Historical fiction novels set during WWII are my favorite, so I have read many in this category. This one was a well-told story showing the complexity of life during WWII. It is a story of family, sacrifices, loyalty and resilience during an awful time in our history.

Another wonderful WWII story of two sisters against German Nazies and destroying the places and people they love..Then,falling in love with the wrong man but his beliefs are not his own!! Follow these two sisters as they try to survive and help others who cant!! Fantastic historical fiction story of family,love,hate and survival!! This was written in a way that the characters become real people . Received from Net Gallery!!

This was an incredible story that truly encompassed the complexity of living during WWII. I read a lot of books that take place during this time period and I have to say this book is one of the more heart wrenching ones. It was really entertaining and enjoyable! I definitely recommend.

Absolutely fantastic. I loved learning about this aspect of history, and while this was an utterly heart-wrenching novel, the writing completely drew the reader into the story. This WWII novel was well written, but nothing about the story made it particularly stand out for me.

I would recommend to the casual reader of WWII Historical Fiction novels, but if you read this genre exclusively, this one might not work for you.

This book is the type of book I gravitate toward. Especially for the WW2 era. I cannot get enough right now of family dynamics from this period. This book definitely gives you family, love, and all that go with it! The sisters capture your heart. Definitely a book I will recommend to readers!

I LOVED this book! It was such a beautifully written story about the complexity of life during WWII. A tale of two sisters and how they went from being inseperable to betraying one another and the consequences of it all. This story takes turns from being completely heart-wrenching to hopeful in the face of adversity. So well done!

An interesting book. This story happens in Ukraine during World War II. Natasha and Lisa live in this country and want to continue their lives in a quotidian way. Lisa plans to get married, and Natasha meets Mark, a charming Hungarian soldier. However, Natasha is not satisfied with what is happening. She will do everything possible to survive, keeping calm, and hope that everything will be better. I liked this book because of the relationship between Natasha and Mark. This interesting man, Mark, is recruited by the Nazis. He had no option and joined to protect his family. I loved that the author recounted what Mark thinks because I felt empathy for him. It's hard having to make sacrifices to stay alive and protect your loved ones. I enjoyed reading this book. It made me curious about what was going to happen between Natasha and Mark. The story takes place during WWII in Kiev, Russia. It is told though the eyes of Natasha and her family living through the German invasion. The bleakness and despair the families lived through during the occupation is vividly told. Yet, through it all unconditional love powerfully survives and prospers. The author, Ms. Kortchick brings stories from her Russian roots along with lots of historical research into Sisters of War. I truly enjoyed this book.

Lana Kortchik's Sisters of War attempts to be a typical World War II genre novel. Unfortunately, it's not half as good as most examples of the genre. Quality-wise, I'd put it in the realm of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, one of the worst World War II books from recent years. Kortchik seems to have a vested interest in the rehabilitating the reputation of the Ukrainian people. Spare me. One of my fellow reviewers lauds her description of Baba Yar and her "insight" that the Jews were hamstrung by their need to follow orders. Were they supposed to engage in hand-to-hand with machine guns? Most people will choose death later rather than death immediately. Communal cultures will choose to die together rather than die alone. That's all. That's the grand insight that Kortchik misses. I hate this book. I'm disappointed in this book. I would never recommend it to anyone seeking a fact-based, information-rich World War II novel.

This was just another typical WWII novel. Nothing special in this.

I love reading historical fiction set during WWII (I’m guessing at this point y’all know its my favorite). I mainly read books set in Europe during this time, so Sisters of War was a fun departure into a new setting. This time, the story is set in Kiev, Ukraine around three months after Hitler attacked the Soviet Union, September 1941. The occupation that lasted a little over two years caused Kievans nightmarish terror, trauma, starvation, prosecution and death. I was completely captivated right from the first page with the rich and detailed descriptions of the daily lives of the people in Kiev as they live in fear, full of anxiety and unease.

Watching the Red Army withdraw from Ukraine in the face of Hitler’s relentless advance, sisters Natasha and Lisa Smirnova realise their lives are about to change forever.

As the German army occupies their beloved city, the sisters are tested in ways they never thought possible. Lisa’s fiancé Alexei is taken by the invading army, whilst Natasha falls in love with Mark – a Hungarian soldier, enlisted against all his principles on the side of the Nazis.

But as Natasha and Lisa fight to protect the friends and family they hold dear, they must face up to the dark horrors of war and the pain of betrayal. Will they be strong enough to overcome the forces which threaten to tear their family apart?

Kortchik's writing was immersive, powerful touching and truly heartfelt. I was drawn into the story, felt and was moved by the pain both sisters and their family dealt with. What people of Ukraine went through is beyond words. This story shines a light on the harrowing lives of Ukrainians as they suffer through Hitler's brutal assault. Though difficult, I found the story hopeful as well, and I really enjoyed this captivating read.

I highly recommend this book for fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, The Nightingale and The Lost Girls of Paris. Overall, a powerful and touching story.

The anguish, disbelief and despair of the people of Kiev are brilliantly written creating heart wrenching scenes of suffering and survival. A lover of historical fiction I jumped at the opportunity to read this and recommend it to fellow lovers of history.

Phenomenal read, that shades lite of WWII in the western part of Europe. Sisters Of War illustrates the bonds of family, their sacrifices, resiliency, loyalty, and bravery.

From the very first days of Kyiv occupation by Germans, Natasha and her family, just like the majority of citizens of Kyiv lived in fear. Their men were collected, followed by food, warm clothes, valuables, germans went as far as to occupy not only kyivlyan's city, but their homes, and their lives.

Natasha's family lived with the hope that any day the Red Army will come to their rescue. Days went by, weeks, months... Their lives became more and more unbearable. One by one, their friends and family were arrested or simply collected by german officers and send to german prisons, Germany's factories, and even worse... concentration camps. But no matter how aggressive german behavior became, Natasha's big heart could not stop doing good, saving lives and giving her last to help people in need. During those first horrendous days, Natasha found herself in arms of danger. But God was looking upon her and sent a goodhearted fellow to save Natasha and her grandmother's lives. Unfortunately, her hero was her nation's enemy.

As months have passed, the war has not only destroyed Natasha's beloved city, it tore her family apart, and broke her loving heart.

I truly enjoyed this story. It is one of the best WWII stories I've come across this year, and I just couldn't put this book down. I adore it and I can't recommend it enough!

Sisters of War is well-reviewed, so I’m going to skip my usual summary and get right into my thoughts. I requested to review this one from Harper Collins because WWII Historical Fiction is my most favorite genre. But this one was a harder read for me than other Historical Fiction because it focused too heavily on romance for my taste.

I thought Natasha was fairly naïve, and that is typical of that time period. Lisa was a self-centered, spoiled brat. I just couldn’t get over my dislike for her. Kortchik wrote the sisters well because she made me really dislike Lisa. The book got repetitive at times, especially with the day to day.

I appreciate that there is a story out there that talks about what Ukraine went through because it’s rarely featured in books. I just feel that the book isn’t as much about the sisters as it is about Natasha and the people that orbit around her. While I was supposed to love the way the book turned out because of all the turmoil, I felt it was too neat, too perfect. It didn’t mesh with not only the historical fiction books I’ve read but survivor accounts as well. This really wasn’t the book for me, but it might be the right book for others.

Natasha holds on to these words from one of her favorite books The Count of Monte Cristo. Her city of Kiev is under the occupation of the Nazi and the world as she knows it is suddenly changed. Every day there is a tragedy and then there is hope. Her family is scattered but a few remain together. You are introduced to her and her family before the occupation took place. A family that loves each other and has each other best interest at heart. Natasha's grandparents live with them as well and they bring a wisdom and respect that keeps the family tight. Natasha has a sister Lisa, an older brother that is fighting in the Red Army and a younger brother that keeps everything light.

With war people change from fear, death and the unknown. Natasha's family experiences the same. Relationships change as well when sisters cannot trust one another and Natasha turns to one that saved her life.

The story is told from Natasha view point with her fears, hurts and faith. Faith in family and that love is good. Natasha does find love in the middle of such evil. Their story keeps me drawn in. The view point of the Russian front is different than other view points because the Russian people are hit from both sides. Survival becomes the thing that matters.
