Bradley Garrett's book BUNKER traces a diversity of different kinds of "preppers" across the globe who seek to prepare themselves for whatever kind of apocolypse they imagine. Although he recognizes that corporations marketing devices and supplies are trading primarly on fear, he ultimately realizes that prepping is a sane response to an insane world. Reading this book during a time of global crisis and pandemic adds a powerful immediacy to these questions.

The author traveled the world interviewing people who are preparing for the "end of the world" by constructing bunkers to ride out the storm in. Along the way, he examines some very elaborate structures, and meets a great variety of people who built them. I was surprised at the number of them, and found a lot of the people to be very odd (at least to me, but who am I to judge).
All in all, I found the book to be rather disturbing.
I think I will take my chances above ground.

I thought this book was well researched by Mr Garrett and you do get a glimpse of all aspects of the "prepping" industry. His interactions with the many different sellers and buyers of Bunkers and related supplies were well written and showed that Mr Garrett did embed himself with these people through his travels. Mr Garrett did sometimes let his interview subjects go off in tangents that seemed to be a bit exploitative, only reflecting after the fact on how these people may actually have mental issues that are being channeled into their motivations to buy or go into bunkers. I also felt that the last chapter, with Mr Garrett sneaking into the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone was unnecessary and added nothing to the story.

I have recently been following preppers and their thoughts on youtube and was interested in this book as an accompaniment to that. I also recently read about underground bunkers in England so this book follows along on that thread as well. I think this book would be a good selection for someone who is already prepping and would like to learn more about the community. It is kind of scary to think about the world changing so much that one would need to follow these directives. Thank you to Netgalley for this free ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Bradley Garrett shows that there's not just one type of prepper with a bunker. He goes into detail about what the preppers are doing and what their thought processes are to show past the stereotype. It's a very interesting account.

This was a great little book. It was excellent at exposing many of the deceptions involved in the prepping world. I learned a lot from this one.
