This was a book based on the point of view of 2 people who fall in love, and the obstacles of war that do not allow them to be together. I enjoyed the concept of this book and how it is diffferent than many other WWII books. This does not take place in a concentrtion camp, or even focus on the Jewish apsect. The story line is easy to follow, and I will admit a little predictable, but it was nice for a new persepective.

THE ENEMY BETWEEN US by MELINDA SUE SANCHEZ is a WWII love story that takes place in Sicily and Italy during the German occupation. It is a story of incredible courage amidst the horrors of war, and of a hopeless love affair between those who the war has turned into "enemies". We are kept on edge reading about attacks from the real enemy, while wondering if Peter and Franca's forbidden romance will have a happy ending.
The story is fast paced, the characters are unforgettable, and I particularly like the portrayal of a typical Italian family, who stick together through thick and thin.
Franca has no idea that her parents are partisans, but when she finds out and hears they are in captivity, she sets off to find them. This pampered young girl, who even battles with milking a cow when when the family are sent to a run down farm to keep safe, becomes someone with whom to reckon as she tries to save those she loves.
A lot has been kept from her, including the fact that a German soldier is living in the barn. She is angry as she feels she is treated as a child. At first she is terrified of Peter, and does her best to chase him away, and then she is terrified of losing him.
It is a story about fear and distrust, betrayal and strength, love and hatred. It is very well written and kept me enthralled from beginning to end.
I highly recommend The Enemy Between Us to anyone who enjoys WWII novels, especially those with a difference.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Covenant Communications. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

A delightful read!

Set in Sicily during WWII as the Allies slowly advance over the Axis, this historical romance is a powerful story of forbidden love, betrayal, loss, courage, and hope. It also opens a unique window into an oft-overlooked portion of the war and the Italian resistance.

With superb descriptions and expert pacing, An Enemy Between Us also shows that when heaven and hell are "scrambled together," sometimes keeping your humanity is the only way to defeat evil, especially when it's staring you in the face.

A German soldier with a conscience refuses a direct order to brutalize a female prisoner, choosing to rescue her instead and desert. Finding refuge with a family of partisans, Peter Weimer is initially regarded with great distrust and suspicion by young Franca Chessari, daughter of the vintner in whose home he's hiding. But Peter's kindness and courage eventually win her over. Even so, war closes in around them and their love can get them both killed... Will their love survive? Will they?

I loved this story. The writing is top-notch, with memorable characters and a tightly knit plot that keeps readers on the edge of their seat.

Franca is a young lady grown up privileged. Her family owns a vineyard and a couple of homes. She is Italian. During the German invasion she is now struggling to put food on the table for herself, her sick sister, her baby nephew and brother in law who had his foot amputated when he was fighting in the war. She is trying to run the family farm. Right now Rosa, the cow is not cooperating about being milked.
Peter wears a German uniform. He is not happy fighting for Germany. He knows the atrocities that go on behind the scenes. When he rescues an Italian girl from being interrogated and tortured, he knows he crossed the line and will be shot dead by the Germans. The best he can do is turn himself in to the allies and hope he can help the resistance.
When Franca realizes that her family has been hiding a German/Nazi she is flabbergasted. Why would they endanger themselves to hide him?
A historical fiction about the war with Hitler and the brave men and women that worked to bring him down. And, a sweet love story proving you can't stop love no matter who the other person may be.
Excellent!!

This book proved to me that love knows no bounds. Even two people on opposite sides of a horrific war can find love in a most stressful time. This storyline was raw and engaging. I lo0k forward to more books by this author.

Thank you net galley for the advance reader copy of this novel. I enjoyed this historical fiction servo. Italy during WWII. This was a fantastic read and the characters of France and Peter were well developed. The concept of a German falling i love with an Italian was not one I had read about before and loved. The details of spies I the catacombs, slaves for Nazis was well done. I loved how good deeds were eventually rewarded. And I am so glad there was the ending we all wanted. 5 stars!!!!!
