Vampire State Building is a nice vampire comic, reminiscent of 30 Days of Night and The Strain, but really missing characters to latch onto. The premise of the comic is interesting yet I feel that the either the antagonist or the protagonists could have had more outstanding presence. The art is great and personally I like the character design for the main vampire.

Vampire State Building: 2.5 Stars

I received this book through NetGalley in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.

As the title suggests, this is the type of story you don't take too seriously. It was fast-paced and a fun, short read, but there wasn't anything too memorable. The only thing that really sets it apart is that the "vampires" in the story act more like mindless zombies. I didn't find any of the characters to be interesting or fleshed out, nor did I care whether or not they survived until the end. I did, however, really enjoy the art style and the use of color. If you really liked The Walking Dead graphic novels, you might like this one too! Artist Charlie Adlard is the illustrator for both.

If you're planning on reading Vampire State Building, don't expect anything too new or exciting. If you're looking for something quick and easy to flip through, you might like it. I love vampires, zombies, and anything apocalyptic, so it was somewhat enjoyable despite the lack of substance. It's very plot driven, and there's also a good amount of gore if that's what you're into.

I really thought this would be right up my alley. Maybe taking a small detour into a narrow lane that I don't visit as often, but up my alley nonetheless. In the end, though, I didn't really enjoy it as much as I'd hoped.

Although not completely my style, the artwork is pretty good, and the story line doesn't glaringly lack for anything; the concept's actually quite cool and shows a lot of research and imagination. I just couldn't find myself investing in it or the characters at all. It's always hard to connect to characters in a shorter medium like this, but the main characters in Vampire State Building just didn't have the depth I need to feel anything for them.

And in this case, if I don't feel anything for the characters, I don't feel anything in terms of what they're forced to endure either.

The way they created the vampires was very unique. I loved the way they gave the vampires their own special language. I enjoyed the book so much. I got so attached to all of the characters immediately.

The title pretty much sums the story in it: The Empire State building is basically a pantry filled with humans that end up as meals for the vampires that attack the city. They’re called the Hamatsa and though we don’t really know their origin –except, perhaps, that they came from an ancient culture-, the creatures are quite scary to say the least, and only fire can take them down.

Now, I was craving a good, old-fashioned vampire story and this did live up to my expectations. The art style is SUPERB and I can’t complain even if I wanted to. The pages feel like watching a movie so it’s kind of refreshing to see such a polished art style. Unfortunately, the story in itself is not that strong, but perhaps this is due to the length of the graphic novel. I must admit that I couldn’t connect with anybody and they kind of feel flat to me, but the ambient and the wide shots in general are top notch.

I would totally recommend you to read this if you’re a fan of graphic novels and supernatural creatures such as vampires!

I received this as an eARC to read for free in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and Diamond Book Distributors for giving me access.

The beginning of Vampire State Building started off slow and then picked up so quickly that it was over and you are left wondering WTF? I am confused a little by the ending and would like to know more about it really.

The graphics is what ultimately lead me to read this. Dark, bloody, and gruesome. My favorite.

If you know exactly what you are getting your self into, then this graphic novel is great. The art was stunning and the action was FAST. Once the zombie threat begins, this book takes no breath, it goes from event to event and before I knew it I was done. Where the action and art shine, I did have a few problem with this. I couldn't really connect to the characters at all but I did feel their fear and desperation. A lot of deaths happen and since this was so fast paced, I didn't really feel much. I also was uncomfortable with the origin story for the zombies.

So many characters were introduced and late killed a few pages later. However, if you;'re looking for a fore blood bath, this it it. The death was pretty satisfying to watch, multiple body ripped in half. As someone who enjoys seeing gory zombie movies, this was a good hour spent.

Although the beginning was a bit rushed to my taste, leaving me feeling lost and confused for a bit, the pieces fall where they belong to and it becomes obvious you’re about to see madness at its fullest and the rawest side of human nature: survival. I found the idea intriguing and appealing, and liked what it could become. We’ve all seen the same old creature-based apocalypse, but this comic took it to a different level, where the threat is obvious to the world since the first moment. I would like more worldbuilding and character development, but it was still a good reading.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this graphic novel. Unfortunately this was not a new favorite for me. I was hoping that with the name it would include a bit more humor. It didn’t allow much room for character attachments and the story of how the Vampires got there didn’t really work. If you’re in the mood for a one sitting quick action packed read, this might be for you. The art in this book was done by the same artist that illustrated The Walking Dead graphic novels so that was pretty cool. The art was well done but the story was meh.

Hello Fellow Readers!

I really have been in the mood for horror and when I saw this I knew this would check all the boxes and it did. I wanted evil vampires, I wanted blood, and I wanted there to be a hero, but while it gave me everything I wanted I still didn't feel fulfilled. Maybe it was just too cliche? But I didn't feel any connection to the characters, so when someone died it didn't affect me to much.

Terry was okay, a man who is going through some (actually a lot) of stuff, he's about to be shipped off and his friends meet at the empire state building to watch the sunset and remind he what he's leaving behind. Honestly, I would like to read more about Terry without all the vampire stuff I think that would make for some interesting reading.

Overall, a good horror Graphic Novel with vampires.

A really fun time! The artwork was stunning!!! Very action packed. The drama was smartly placed and just the right amount of info dumping where necessary. I could see a few options as far as alertnate directions for future works in this series. It is open ended enough that the authors can go anywhere with the story line. Getting views from the police departments perspective on the outside of the situation was essential and gave a necessary reprieve to the events within the building. We are rooting for the characters the entire time and all situations were high risk. Anyone can die at any time and that made for a very edge of your seat experience. Looking forward to more from these creators in the future!! Will recommend to many readers I know.

The Walking Dead meets Vampires. I absolutely loved it. Right up my alley. An ancient vampire is awakened through a remodel in The Empire State Building and creates vampires who reek havoc. Loved it.

Vampire State Building has a fascinating concept: a Native American legend about a vampire master who is brought back to unleash an undead army unto the world. The one original caveat is the setting. The legend states that it has to happen close to the sky, hence, the Empire State Building is where the master resides.

The story, itself, could have used a little more background for the characters. I didn’t really connect with any of them. I feel like the story would have been better served as a novel. My favorite part was the art style. It fit the narrative, perfectly.

Hello everyone and welcome to Gray's Nook where I discuss and review manga, short stories, and novels! In today's blog, I was graciously allowed a copy of "Vampire State Building" by Ange--Renault & Charlie Adlard from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I am a fan of horror, and anything that has a similar feel to 30 Days of Night, as I feel that's one of the best nightmare fueled movies ever have been created. I digress, Vampire State Building is one of the newer editions to Charlie Adlard's repertoire of horror madness.

In this comic, we find ourselves running for our lives with Terry and his ex-girlfriend, Mary, as they fight for their lives to get out of the Empire State Building.

***The Cast:***

The Scoob Crew---I Mean the Vamp Crew...?

[Rachel, Will, Gavin, Terry (Main Character), Mary (Main Character, and Ashley (Main Character's Cousin).]
The motley crew above is first introduced to us in the first few pages of the comic, each character reminded me of something out of a horror flick parody. We have Rachel who is the sex-crazed party girl, Will-the only levelheaded guy out of the group, Gavin the arrogant sport's jock, Mary--the quiet and intuitive girl, and Ashley-the caring and compassionate one.

But Gray... This isn't really a proper introduction for these characters--are you just being lazy? I wish I were, but there wasn't much for me to analyze for any of these characters even the two main ones. We are only given bits of bones about each one, as everything actually goes to hell in the first five pages of the story.

However, even though I do mention that the apocalypse comes storming in like a wrecking ball in the first chapter, there's very little to grasp about these characters and as to why we need to be rooting for them.

[Gabrielle and Jackson]
Okay, these two are the only ones who you get an idea of their goals and their thought processes. Gabrielle is a serious woman with a compassionate heart when Jackson enters the same elevator with her. We get a glimpse of their budding love affair and how she only wants what is best for Jackson and his goals.

As for Jackson, we see this strong-willed man who is pursuing his dreams of opening his own business. He is passionate about what he wants to do, but he also makes it known to Gabrielle that he wants her to be his partner in life. To be honest, these two gave me more life than the main characters, even if their segment was smaller then Mary and Terry's side of things.

[Vampires]

The vampires of the comic, these guys are pretty gnarly looking and remind me of the older looks for vampires. Like in Blade and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, these vamps have a distorted and grotesque look to their features. Long extended sharp claws, viper like incisors, blood-red sclera, and the wild Fangoria look about them. They are minions though, they follow the orders of the head honcho below:

Manasta-Antagonist
Meet the Overlord of the Vampires, in the series he is called Manasta, but I got confused if the vampires in this whole series are called Manasta or just him. He isn't the normal type of vampire as every part of his body actually has a mouth to feed for blood. This vampire... Looks like Nosferatu just with an alien flair to him.

Gray's Thoughts:

I'll be honest, I wasn't impressed by this comic, and the characters fell flat on giving the readers a reason to like them. Terry who is the main character, there wasn't much for me to understand or even like about him. The same goes for Mary, and the rest of the crew except for Gabrielle and Jackson. I was deflated about the whole plot and events that occurred as it felt like it was one of those B-Rated action flicks that added the overly atrocious teenage slasher flick tropes.

I do like The Walking Dead series, and I applaud the work of Charlie Adlard in that series itself, however... I do feel this comic was trying a bit too hard at being something different. It felt as if we walked into another version of The Walking Dead, except with vampires and they just added cannon fodder to fill in the gaps of the story.

As always, thanks for reading, and see you all on the fictional side~!

4/5 stars!
I really enjoyed reading this work.
It was quick and I read it in a single sitting.
I thought the colour scheme was superb and the whole idea - a vampire outbreak in a closed-off building where the survivor count drops one by one is just a masterpiece on a whole another level. The panic, the hysteria, etc were all really well portrayed in the motions of the different characters.
Moreover, the various frames and backgrounds were juxtaposed very well within the panels.
I really enjoyed reading this novel!

Something just changed at the Empire State building and not for the better. The story kept me reading and the art fed my curiosity. I am glad I was able to read it as a collected work instead of separate volumes.

'Vampire State Building' by Ange and Patrick Renault with art by Charlie Adlard is a graphic novel that races by and is shamelessly fun to read.

A group of friends meet on the observation deck of the Empire State Building to bid farewell to one of them. Unbeknownst to them, there is evil waking in the building. It calls to others in the city and the undead will rise to feast. Will the group of friends make it out unchanged?

This was kind of like Die Hard meets an 1970s disaster movie. It reads way to fast, and I had a great time reading it. The art is pretty great. I'm sure I'd find things to dislike about it if I wanted, but it was a really fun ride.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

All in all a good story. A group of friends gather at the Empire State Building for a farewell gathering in honor of Terry, who is soon to be deployed to Afghanistan. Hundreds of people are there when a disturbance on the 75th floor occurs. Cannibals or “vampires” are unleashed from a being a hidden door just discovered during renovations. Now it’s up to Terry to get his friends to safety.

I enjoyed this comic book. It has just the right amount of scary, and dialogue to engage me in the story. I think I read that one of the artists behind The Walking Dead comic series worked on this one!

I would recommend this comic to those who enjoy The Walking Dead and other similar comics. I would definitely be interested in reading about this story further.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Vampire state building is a new comic book graphic novel by the writer of The Walking Dead and really didn't dissapoint!

Full of gorey lifelike illustrations and a quick fire story, I was turning pages as fast as I could.

This edition hosts a number of poster pages and signed sketches of characters from the book. I hope this continues as a series as I can see so much more to be offered in this comic strip.

Terry and his friends gather for a going away party at the Empire State Building but renovations in the building disturb a hidden chamber that unleashes an ancient curse within. The Vampire God awakens and his army begins to rip through the crowds inside the building, trapping everyone in a gory massacre to sate his unearthly appetite.

First of all, the artwork in this book is beautiful. The eye-catching colors and textures are done so well that they alone are worth the read. Secondly, it's a really cool take on vampires: they're not the romanticized, moving-among-us, human-looking creatures luring us into their lair that we're used to. These are straight up vicious monsters out for blood. The story was pretty good for what it was, very fast-paced and action packed if not a little predictable. A solid 4.5 ⭐'s, it was just missing a little more oomph to the story to really kick it up another notch. It kept me on the edge of my seat but also left me wanting more. This edition contains a collection of cover art, each striking in their own way. Definitely one you'll want for your collection if you're a fan of horror comics.

Thanks to Diamond Book Distributors for providing a reader's copy via NetGalley.
