What an utterly charming book. I admit I was getting slightly bored with some historical romances that have been badly written but this book oh, the joy, wonderful use of the English language, beautiful words leap from the page. The story is lovely, characters believable.

I usually love Mary Jane Staples and have read and enjoyed many of her books but this one just didn't hold me. I don't know why but I couldn't warm to the characters or their lives. I did read the first 100 pages but got a bit bored. Sorry.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book x

A Sister’s Secret by Mary Jane Staples

Marm, makes me think of Little Women or a school teacher! I am positive the Author did not have that in her mindset! Captain Burnside is a rogue on the inside, but Caroline thinks he is one through and through! The Duke of Cumberland is a lecherous Royal who uses his position and title to coerce people to his will. He currently has Caroline in his purview and he doesn’t care who he uses to get her even if he has to corrupt her younger naive sister Annabelle.
Caroline will do anything to save her sister, but instead of giving in to Cumberland, she hires Captain Burnside to help corral her wayward sister from the clutches of the no good Royal.
The adventures are about to begin and a new player , Jonathan enters the picture to only confound the situation! Laughter and mischievous moments are about to begin so push a button and grab a good book.
I received an advanced copy from NetGalley and I am willingly giving my thoughts and opinions.

I really struggled to get into this story I am afraid, despite the promising preview I did not enjoy the writing style or the characters. So on this occasion I am afraid I could not finish the novel, which is something I really hate to do as I know how much time and effort would have gone into its creation. I would like to thank the publishers and NetGalley for allowing me to read a copy of this book. Sometimes despite really enjoying a particular genre of fiction you cannot connect with an author’s style which happened here.

Horrible characters. I couldn't find any value in any of them. The story was hard to read, no flow to it, and the conversations were long and useless. Not my type of story at all.

Well. There was not much to this story as it was not an actual story. It did not read like a story. It read like word vomit. Everything just ran together. There were no pauses. The reader would be given 3 people in a room and there would be introspection, but you couldn't identify who was thinking what. It was the same as conversations. According to the way this author wrote, the people were in a room, said a sentence, then everyone would think, then there would be a response, but the reader would have to back up two pages to re-read and determine who was saying what or who was thinking what. People floated all around this book. There was no direction as to who was in a room, or the stables, or the carriage. The use of double negatives and other bad grammar was used throughout the whole story. The author used such a strange way of writing, it was like the reader had to translate what was being read. And the book was in English and still didn't make sense. I give this book zero stars and do not recommend

Book : A Sister's Secret
Author : Mary Jane Staples
Genre : Historical Romance
📚
Lady Caroline, the widow of wicked Lord Perceival repents her hasty marriage to him out of infatuation. She owns two estates in her name and is free to lead a life fully socialising with London's finest aristocracy. Her only problem is her sister Anabelle who is about to fall victim to a similar fate at the hands of Cumberland, a villainous Duke. Caroline hires a charming professional gentleman, Captain Burnside who had to dissuade her sister from wicked intentions of Cumberland. But Fate spins it's wheel differently and circumstances change.

Classic lovers and readers of historical romance will like the book. It had all the ingredients perfectly simmered to qualify it a good classic read. The middle of the book got sluggish but other than that it was fine. Language used is also beautifully adorned with descriptive words. Being a classic lover..... 4⭐/5

Rather a bland read with seemingly no chemistry between the main characters. A whole lot of fluff with not a lot of substance.

Mary Jane Staples is a genius! The storyline was amazing. I could not put the book down. Her characterization was wonderful and her intertwining of her characters with some famous historical characters is nothing short of genius.

The major characters were very witty. This is a book with 2 wonderful love stories. I loved this book!

This book is about Lady Caroline that is very rich, she has to make up her mind to marry or not. Some things that have happened have made her rethink of being married. Also in this book, there is Carolines younger sister Annabelle, whom herself has no problem with love and commitment. Annabelle is in love with a man that is known for cheating. Caroline knows this and Annabelle doesn't believe her. Caroline hires Captain Burnside which is very attractive enough to distract Annabelle. But it doesn't go that way.

I really enjoyed this story, it had a little of everything. but I got a little bored halfway. I love this author but this book wasn't for me.

I recommend this book to people that like historical romance.

I would like to give thanks to NETGALLEY and Random House UK for letting me read and review this book.

I read this book with its unusual storyline but overall I have to say it wasn’t for me. I was not particularly keen on the majority of the characters, all of whom had little depth of character, which is perhaps why I didn’t enjoy it very much.
