On Deadly Tides by Elizabeth Duncan is the 11th mystery featuring watercolour artist, businesswoman and self-proclaimed amateur sleuth, Penny Brannigan. In this installment, Penny is enjoying an idyllic summer painting holiday on an island off the coast of North Wales, when she discovers the body of a young New Zealand journalist on the beach. The death appears to be an accident, apparently caused by injuries sustained in a fall, but Penny thinks there’s more to the story. Despite the distraction of a holiday romance with a wildlife photographer, who happens to also be a fellow Canadian, Penny discovers a connection between the journalist’s death and a mysterious disappearance that occurred years ago.

Elizabeth Duncan’s award-winning Penny Brannigan series offers a lovely escape to Wales, amidst cleverly plotted mysteries, reminiscent of Agatha Christie. The darkness of murder is kept at bay by the cozy setting and lyrical prose. Stone cottages give way to open countryside with ranges of green hills, terraced houses in pastel colours, and picturesque lighthouses. Murder is discussed over cups of tea and slices of bara brith—bread speckled with tea-soaked raisins. Duncan provides a delightful Canadian twist on the classic English mystery. A must-read!

On Deadly Tide is a murder mystery where the murder investigation progresses slowly. Actually, the first half of the story is mostly about Penny’s budding romance and the death of a young journalist is mainly seen as tragic. Though there are some oddities.

Things change when Jessica’s mother Louise comes to Wales to see the place where her daughter died and to take her body home. When staying at the hotel where her daughter stayed Louise takes a near fatal overdose of sleeping pills. Adamant she did not take any sleeping pills herself, this convinces Penny - and local police - there might be more to Jessica’s death after all.

The culprit is pretty obvious and I was reading on to be proven wrong. I’m actually a bit disappointed that I wasn’t.

There are a few other things I’m a bit disappointed in. For instance: Louise describes her daughter was a very ethical journalist, but then she gives an example of a story her daughter has worked on about a politician taking bribes, that doesn’t quite make Jessica shine as an ethical journalist. Apparently, Jessica rang the politician the evening before the story ran in the newspaper “to prepare him”. That makes it sound like she has not tried to speak to him before on the topic of taking bribes. It’s a good journalistic practice to try to get all sides of the story, i.e. to talk to the politician well before the story is going to run so you can add his perspective in a side bar (or mention that the politician declined to comment).

The story was well-written, but I’m quite certain that if I didn’t have an ARC that is only available for a limited time (so there was some pressure to finish it), I would have probably put this book aside at some point and forgotten to ever get back to it.

A love story and a puzzling mystery, they make an alluring dual combination. Penny and Colin a love at first sight couple found themselves entwined in a mysterious death that had more questions than answers, thereby causing Penny to go into ASM, amateur sleuth mode. I find the romantic parts were a bit too long, although to be honest, the short mystery scenes blended very well, making it extremely entertaining.

On Deadly Tides is the first book by Elizabeth J. Duncan that I've read. I don't normally jump into a series at book #11, but I've been wanting to try the Penny Brannigan series for some time. My TBR pile is a bit out of control and I lose track of things I want to read just because..... so. many. books. So I decided to break my rule of reading series in order and tried this newest book.

I'm so glad I did! This book was delightful!

Penny Brannigan decides to go on a weekend art getaway with a friend. A dead body on the beach adds some drama to their planned art retreat. Who killed the reporter and why?

This cozy mystery really has the old classic mystery feel to it! I really enjoyed it! This story has a bit slower pace, lots of description of Wales, the coast and the people they meet. I definitely got the old time whodunit feel from this story!

I'm definitely backtracking and reading this series from the beginning! Very entertaining read!

"On Deadly Tides” the 11th instalment in A Penny Brannigan Mystery series by Elizabeth J. Duncan. I have read a few of the books in this series and really enjoy them, I like that the protagonist is a Canadian living in Wales. This can be read as a stand alone but recommend reading in order.

I really enjoy this series, and I need to start at the beginning to be fully caught up. I love the descriptions of the North Wales seaside and can picture myself walking along with Penny and her friends.

The mystery is interesting and well plotted, with two murders to solve. I liked that even though Penny was away on a weekend holiday we returned to Llanelen and we got to visit with Victoria , Mrs. Lloyd, etc. I also really enjoyed the surprise ending and can’t wait to see what’s in store for Penny.

I highly recommend this book to all my cozy lover friends. I can’t wait for the next book to come out.

I requested and received an advance reader copy of this book from Crooked Lane Books and Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

It has been a while since I read a British cozy and I had forgotten how the gentle charm of the writing can draw a reader in as quickly and irresistibly as a shocking or hilarious beginning. I spite of the overall gentle pace, On Deadly Tides definitely has its moments! With the 11th book in her Penny Brannigan series, On Deadly Tides, Elizabeth J. Duncan does a marvelous job of weaving her cozy tale while captivating this reader completely. The pace may be slow and easy, but the fascinating story and the delightful characters drew me inexorably onward until it was almost impossible to put the book down.
Fans of the series will be particularly delighted to meet a new character that Penny encounters on her painter’s weekend, a weekend of tragedy and happiness. This is the first book that I have read in the series and I felt completely comfortable starting here but I also feel compelled to go back and discover the riches of the earlier books.
I found On Deadly Tides when I was browsing Crooked Lanes list on NetGalley and it fascinated me so I could not resist and I am so glad I chose it. Thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane for allowing me to read and share my enjoyment of my newest addiction.

To be honest this read as though it was going to be the last book in the series. There was a definite sense of winding up the old and moving on to another stage in the main character's life.

The characters were all interesting, the mystery was suitable mysterious and there was a satisfying ongoing romance. Altogether a pleasant easy read which probably would have held my attention more if I had read the earlier books in the series. I will look out for more books by this author anyway.

Murder and Drama on the Welsh Coast
This book is one of a series that I have not read and I did not feel lost at any time. This mystery is very good. It is tinged with romance and art. While our heroine is an amateur sleuth, she does not take ridiculous chances and stays in close contact with her friendly detective. This book kept my interest all the way through and was difficult to put down. I will be reading more of this author's work. I received this ARC book for free from Net Galley and this is my honest review.

On Deadly Tides is part of the Penny Brannigan series but was good as a stand alone. There were times of course that referenced earlier books but it didn't detract from the story. Penny and her friend go on an artist retreat weekend and meet Colin, who is a nature photographer and is there for the retreat and to see the local scenery. Penny and Colin hit it off which is a nice addition to the story. They also meet Jessica who is from New Zealand and is working on a couple of articles for her newspaper. The next day Jessica is found dead, apparently an accidental fall. Penny and friends are suspicious and they want to help Jessica's mother get some answers. This was a very enjoyable cozy mystery with likable characters, some romance, and an interesting mystery. #NetGalley #OnDeadlyTides

On Deadly Tides is #11 in the series but the first one I have read. It worked extremely well as a standalone and I thoroughly enjoyed it-I read it one sitting.

Penny Brannigan is an engaging protagonist and an amateur sleuth, but she does not go looking for murders. In a nice change from most cozies, she has a good relationship with the police.

Penny and her friend are attending an artist workshop in a town near where she lives. She strikes up a conversation with a gentleman at the hotel bar and they are joined by a young newspaper reporter from New Zealand. The next morning when Penny and her friend are painting at a picturesque lighthouse Penny spies what appears to be a body in the water and discovers the young woman who she had met the night before. It appears to be an accidental death but Penny has doubts. And when the young woman's mother arrives from New Zealand, Penny feels she needs to dig a bit deeper, especially as some strange things occur.

There is also a very nice romance in the story and it is nice to have an older heroine fall in love.

There was a blurb from Carolyn Hart on the cover and since she's an author I enjoy I thought I'd take a chance. I'm glad I did and hope to read the earlier entries and hope there will be more.

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley but any opinions expressed are my own.

Penny and her friend, both keen amateur artists, have signed up for a painting weekend in a nearby part of Wales. The first night there, they meet an enthusiastic young reporter from New Zealand, and are shocked to learn of her death the next day. Was it an unfortunate accident, or murder? Did someone want to silence her investigation? Penny also meets a handsome gentleman, and wonders if there is a future in their relationship, as he is based in Toronto. I had not read this author before, but will look for more of her books, since I enjoyed the Welsh setting, the characters, and the happily ever after ending.. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing an ARC.

Thanks to NetGalley for this early read.
This is my first Penny Brannigan mystery. I did try to read one book earlier in the series but I couldn’t get into it. This one was easy to get caught up in. It includes a murder near the beginning, a missing man, a cat, a light house and a love interest. It also appears that Penny is about to have some major changes in her life. However, it was very short, I read it in one evening. I will try the next book whenever it comes out because this one was a charming cozy.
There were some minor info dumps that read like they might have been taken from a travel guide and one that seemed like it could have been an ad for an app but nothing too annoying.
4 stars, rounding up from 3.5

This is a well written mystery that holds your attention. The author made the book come to life with her words; you could see the scenery and you felt like you were there. It was a really good read and I look forward to reading more books by this author. Thank you Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley for the ARC copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.

I really enjoyed reading On Deadly Tides. The book was well written with attention to detail, especially in the description and the plot/mystery was engaging. I also liked several of the characters in the book, which I felt was complex and well written. An added bonus to it all was the setting of Anglesey and North Wales, especially as I've visited Llandudno a few times.

The Delights Of A Painting Retreat.....
A Penny Brannigan mystery. Sometime amateur sleuth, Penny, is basking in the delights of a painting retreat on the Anglesey coast, that is, until the untimely arrival of a dead body. Following a ruling of accidental death Penny remains sceptical. Enjoyable cosy with a likeable protagonist and a colourful cast of supporting characters, plenty of mystery and even a budding romance. A worthy addition to the series.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book!

This cozy combines two of my favorites; art and mystery! What a combination! Immediately I felt a connection with Penny, and I adored the setting chosen for this one. Even though I've never been there, I felt right at home in Wales, painting a lighthouse. This is the magic of the best kind of cozy; a kind of welcome home feel to instantly put the reader at ease. Then you get the sudden chill of murder, and you follow the sleuth as they try and make everything as OK as it's going to be again. This mystery was well thought out, but I'm going to admit I was a sucker for the romance too! It was well crafted and just felt very sweet and real.

I read this in one sitting as a bath grew cold around me, that is how invested in the plot and characters I was. A great cozy series, I'd love to read more from this author.

On Deadly Tides by Elizabeth J. Duncan is a part of the Penny Brannigan mystery series. Overall, it was a good read (I would rate it a 3.5 out of 5 stars). The writing was done well with attention to detail in the descriptions that brought the plot and story elements to life. I did find myself skimming some pages, though and was able to figure out the murder before it was revealed.

This was my first time reading a book in this series, but I didn't' feel like I missed anything. I will check out other books by this author.
