I love reading about the British Raj in India so I decided to give this one a try. The first two-thirds of this story were really good including the main characters and great descriptions of Bombay. Ashcroft really captured the atmosphere of a particular time and place and I enjoyed that quite a bit. However, I did find that the last third of the story dragged a bit for me. I'm not usually impatient and love a great anticipatory plot but this one seems to be a little too slow and tortuous for my taste. It was also hard to relate to some of the characters' motivations and actions. Anyway, I ended up skimming to the end..

So, 3 stars for the first 2/3 and 1 star for the last 1/3.

Meet Me In Bombay is one of the best historical fiction books I’ve ever read!

Meet Me In Bombay is about British soldiers and their families living in India during World War I. This is a story of love, loss, family and friendship. I have nothing I would change about the book. Meet Me In Bombay is a fantastic book.

I highly recommend this to all historical fiction fans. I think fans of The Bronze Horseman will love this book.

Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

My thanks to Jenny Ashcroft, St. Martins Press and Netgalley for the ARC of MEET ME IN BOMBAY.
Beautiful, heart-rending and very moving. I love this novel. This is because my interest in historical fiction began with my grandmother who went to India in WWI and gave birth to my father in Secunderabad, so this novel really touched my heart. I was amazed and delighted to see Secunderabad mentioned, where my father lived in a cantonment until he was seven. I write about these wonderful events and places in historical fiction myself, so reading MEET ME IN BOMBAY felt like coming home. Utterly compelling!

This is a beautiful love story, well written and atmospheric. It is somewhat generic in its plot but that doesn’t detract from a throughly absorbing story.

A book with exotic features, wonderful descriptions of the places, illustrated as delicate watercolors with bright colors. For the duration of the novel, the scents of those lands full of mystery were almost palpable, it almost seemed to perceive the invigorating air of the Indonesian coasts, the intensity of the spices of the Bombay markets, the iridescent colors of the waters and fabrics of the sari. A book full of subplots, of mysteries and ties that will keep us in suspense, until its last page. I was totally enraptured by this beautiful story, which I hope will also arouse the intense emotions that made me live.

I thoroughly enjoyed this historical fiction set in Bombay during WWI. I was drawn to the two main characters and the once in a lifetime love story that they shared. The author's depiction of Bombay were so real that I could feel the stifling heat, taste the spices and hear the chaos of the Indian markets. The descriptions of the war were accurate but not too graphic. I did feel the book dragged a bit towards the end. I had a sense for the ending and was ready to tie things up. If you're a fan of historical fiction romances, I recommend this one!

This was a beautiful and sometimes tragic book. The writing was descriptive and I could imagine being there, feeling the heat and experiencing what Maddy did.

Ashcroft delivers a heart-wrenching love story set in the colorful World War I era India that will hook you and not let you go. The characters are charismatic, the plot heady, and rife with emotion as these young adults struggle to find each other and their lives again. A bit Nicholas Sparks-like, I was getting aggravated with the turn of events until they turned again in my favor. Such a sweet love story with so many events, Ashcroft masterfully captured the essence of life and love.
