Lynn King Grieve’s Lucky for Daisey is a good and quick read with interesting illustrations. I enjoyed the book but the story is a little disjointed. I also wish it had more depth. Some of the illustrations also seem unfinished.

Black Lab Daisey is a happy and loveable dog. She has many adventures in her backyard. One day, she gets an interesting surprise! Daisey meets a little bird named Lucky who becomes a special new friend and joins her on an adventure.

This is a simple and familiar story about new adventures, experiences, friendships and discovering yourself. But, I wish the story had a little more depth. I also think the book meanders a bit and sometimes seems a little disjointed.

However, this is still a heart-warming tale. I enjoyed the sweet and unusual friendship between brave Lucky and friendly Daisey. They are both lovely characters. I especially like how plucky Lucky ends up helping out Daisey.

Grieve’s writing is simple and approachable. This is a gentle and easy read. But, some parts of the book could have been trimmed. There is also a lot of text which may be too much for younger readers. This book seems more appropriate for slightly older children or for parents to read aloud to their kids.

The sketch-like illustrations are really interesting. It’s a bold choice and I like the unusualness. I also like that the book is filled with both full-page and smaller illustrations. Some of the drawings are brightly coloured, some are in black and white, and others seem like unfinished outlines. I like the art’s homemade quality. However, some of the art isn’t very eye-catching or detailed. Moreover, it is sometimes difficult to discern what some drawings are. I do like how the typography changes to match the narrative.

Lucky for Daisey is a good book with unique illustrations. It is a sweet little story to read aloud to your young readers. I like Grieve’s art style and I would check out more of her work!

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and Concierge Marketing Inc. for an honest review. However, the copy was completely unreadable and I had to purchase an ecopy of this book for myself. All opinions are my own.

Unfortunately I am unable to give an actual review. The download only shows blank pages on the aikido reader. However, this book sounds like it would be very cute.
