Two sisters who have been through a rough childhood now navigating through adult hood. A great start to a slow book. Also, annoyed that the Librarian always seems like they made to be weird? I am librarian and I hate to see that they make those characters so strange. Book was good, but the Mother-In Law was a lot better!

Thank you Netgalley for this ARC of The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth.

This is now my second Hepworth novel, and I think I'm hooked! She has such a quiet way of weaving a lovely tale, and then BOOM, darkness, intrigue, scandal!

Fern and Rose are such close twin sisters that they even have bracelets that they use for their own way to communicate. Having been raised in an unstable home, Rose has always taken care of Fern, who has sensory issues and is left vulnerable. But Fern has made a good life for herself. She works at the library, visits her mom in the nursing home, despite their difficult upbringing, and remains deeply devoted to Rose, who is her person. But Rose has just confided in Fern, she can't get pregnant, and is so desperate to have a child. Fern would love nothing more than to give her sister what she wants, but can she do this for her?

Like I said, a nice story, and I will say nothing more. I LOVED the characters, the slow unfolding, the writing, all of it was so compelling.

I was very excited to read this latest book by Sally Hepworth. The first book of hers I read was The Mother-in-Law, and I enjoyed that one so much, I quickly worked my way through the rest of her catalog. The Good Sister turned out to be another good read and features a fascinating female character.

Fern and Rose are sisters and as is the case with many siblings, they are very different from one another. Rose is the responsible one with a husband and spent most of her childhood protecting Fern from their sociopath mother. Fern is a librarian and tends to be more of a free spirit with a unique outlook on life. When the sisters were kids, Fern did something terrible, but Rose kept it a secret. The story goes back and forth between both sisters, featuring the present day plot of Rose wanting a baby, and info about their childhood when the big, bad, terrible thing took place.

This book features my favorite character out of all of the author's novels. (Am I going to reveal which character I am referring to? No way!) While the story definitely has thriller elements, I think it reads better as a regular fiction novel with strong character development. There really wasn't much that caught me off guard while reading, but I don't look at that as a negative because I still was heavily invested in watching the story play out.

If you have read and enjoyed other books by this author, I do recommend picking this one up.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me an advance digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is one of the quirkiest books I’ve ever read. Quirkier than Eleanor Oliphant, and that’s saying something. And I kinda loved it?? This isn’t a mystery novel like the cover would lead you to believe. It’s more of a psychological family drama. But it’s riveting.

The main character has sensory processing disorder, and I’ve never read a book with that before. It was fascinating. Led to some hilarious dialogue.

My biggest negatives with the book is that it’s kind of all over the place in that it’s told back and forth between Fern’s present day POV and her sister Rose’s diary, and they both have flashback moments to an incident when they were 12 throughout the book. But it’s slowly building up to a great ending. Was it kind of predictable? Yes! But the quality of Hepworth’s writing is phenomenal and I couldn’t put it down. Once I got about 25% in I set down today and read it straight through. I really loved it and look forward to reading more of Hepworth’s works.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy.

This novel made me super anxious! I so badly wanted Fern to “snap out of it” and realize she was being manipulated.

Fern and Rose are fraternal twins. The novel bounces back and forth from Ferns POV and Rose’s diary entries. Fern has sensory issues and spends her whole life depending on Rose for help when things get overwhelming for her. Rose paints a picture in her diary of a terrible childhood- a mean mom that emotionally abuses them. But about 50% into the novel, things start to really pick up. A boy was murdered when they were teens and Fern was responsible. But was she? And was the mom really as bad as Rose said? It was a great summer read and I couldn’t put down the last half of the book. Thrilling with a splash of romance elements (Fern and Wally). I was not shocked by the twist, however I was so anxious to see how it was going to end!

Thank you NetGalley for an advanced copy! I enjoyed it!

In the novel “The Good Sister”, Fern and Rose are fraternal twin sisters who have always been close. As children, Rose saw how negligent their mother was, and constantly protected and sheltered her naive sister. Now as adults, Rose lives a stable life married to her husband, Owen, and unconventional Fern works at the local library. Even as an adult, Fern still relies heavily on her sister for support, since she lives with some difficulties. When Rose confides in Fern that she is unable to get pregnant, Fern makes it her mission to fulfill this dream for her sister by having her baby. However, in this suspenseful novel, secrets will emerge, and things will not go as smoothly as planned.

The novel is told primarily from the point of view of Fern, alternating with brief backstory excerpts from Rose’s journal. Fern is a very unique character, and so dissimilar from most characters standardly depicted in novels. She is such a memorable and extraordinary character, and truly one of the best characters I have seen in a novel recently. All of the characters are incredibly dynamic, as are the relationships between them, especially between Fern, Rose, and their mother. “The Good Sister” is brimming with familial drama, and truly a character-driven novel. This novel is just so well done, and I highly recommend reading this book when it is released in April of 2021.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advance copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

I had enjoyed Sally Hepworth´s last book so I was very excited to read The Good Sister. I think you should go into this book without knowing too much about the plot. It is about two adult twin sisters, Fern and Rose. Fern is a librarian who is clearly very quirky and socially awkward and she relies heavily on Fern who is married and responsible. This book was not what I was expecting at all, but I think many readers would love this story of these sisters. If you love quirky characters and books about relationships, this book will be for you.

The Good Sister tells the relationship of two sisters Fern and Rose with alternating perspectives. Fern's part is told in present day, whereas Rose's part is told from her past journal entries. This psychological thriller is multi-layered including romance and quirkiness.

This book was a quick, enjoyable, page-turning read for me. I came to love the character of Fern over the course of the novel. My book-loving self also enjoyed the fact that Fern is a librarian!!

Highly recommend!

A big thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of this amazing book. I’ve previously read two of Hepworth’a books and really enjoyed both of them. This one was in another level fabulous. Twin sisters who obviously have a connection, but which one can be trusted? I couldn’t put this book down- it was so good! Highly, highly recommend!

3.5 stars Having just finished The Mother in Law, I was eager to start The Good Sister. While The Good Sister kept me turning the page, it was extremely predictable. Fern and Rose are twins. Fern is on the spectrum and Rose looks out for her, keeping her safe from their mom and the world. Things take a dark turn when the girls are adults. Don't want to spoil the plot, but the story alternates between Fern and Rose's perspectives and is a fast read. Fans of Sally Hepworth will enjoy this.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.

This book is responsible for the worst book hangover I’ve ever had in my life! ♥️ I absolutely LOVED it. I finished it about 3 weeks ago {after sailing through it in one sitting} and I haven’t been able to get it off of my mind. I was going to hold off on my review for awhile, as this doesn’t release until next year. However, I can’t stop thinking about it so I just need to gush to you all about it! ♥️ This is hands down my very favorite @sallyhepworth and what I firmly believe to be her best work yet. This is centered around two sisters, Rose and Fern, and the intricacies of their sibling relationship. Fern may be one of my very favorite characters of all time! She was written so beautifully and @sallyhepworth so perfectly captured the essence of this unique character. Just writing that and thinking about Fern brought tears to my eyes! I finished this book and held it to my heart with tears in my eyes and a smile on my face. Friends, I cannot express my love for this book and this character enough. 💕 I’m obsessed. One of my favorite reads of the year, and in my top reads of all time. Preorder this one now, you do not want to miss it!! I’m giving this one 6⭐️, because the full five doesn’t seem enough. I absolutely, wholeheartedly, enthusiastically adored this novel! ♥️ My thanks to @stmartinspress for the advance reader in exchange for my honest review.

"The Good Sister", by Sally Hepworth, is a mystery/thriller that really makes you think! Based on the lives of twin sisters, Fern and Rose, the author will make you question which one is really the *good* sister? And you just might change your mind along the way! I really enjoyed reading about Fern and her struggles, and was surprised by the ending.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth is an unforgettable story of twin sisters. This book begins with Rose's story about an incidence at the lake when the twins were younger. What really happened to Billy? Who or what is responsible for his drowning? Fern has a sensory sensitivity issue and Rose has always protected her and come to her rescue when Fern's senses are overwhelmed. Rose fears the world will take advantage of Fern and that Fern is incapable, with her handicap, of making smart choices. Rose desperately wants to have a baby and Fern, in her loyalty and appreciation of her sister, coupled with her naivety, wants to help. So the story begins. Everything is not as it seems in this thriller. Rose has medical issues of her own. She is an insulin dependent diabetic and has yet to conceive. On top of that she and Owen, her husband, have some issues also. While the world begins to open up for Fern with her newly discovered friendships, expanding roles at work, and a love interest things change between the sisters. Will Fern be able to help her sister be the mother she wants to be? Was their Mom the monster that Rose remembers? Can Fern face the difficulties of being a mature woman without the help of Rose? This book is one of the best thrillers I have read. While magnified for this book it also brings to light some of the issues faced by sisters. In addition it portrays the reality of sensory sensitivity in a realistic way and helps the reader understand the pain and suffering of those afflicted by the disorder. This book is full of surprises. Thoroughly enjoyed this "can't put it down book". Thanks to #NetGalley for allowing me to read and review #NetGalley#TheGoodSister.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the Kindle Arc of The Good Sister. I had only read one book by Sally Hepworth before this one and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I like The Good Sister, but not quite as well as The Mother-In-Law. Without giving too much away, it was an unreliable narrator story that I was fine with until the end of the book. The Good Sister was still an entertaining read and I will read more of Sally Hepworth's books.
