I love Sarah Andersen works, so I was excited about her new book.
This is a lovely, funny book, with a cute but extraordinary couple. I love to see their relationship is developing.
I would read more about them!

This was a bit of a change in terms or artistic style from the author of Sarah’s Scribbles. Now, fuse that charm with the adorable relationship dynamics of Catana Comics, add a werewolf-vampire love story, & you’ve got fangs. If you, like me, enjoy vampires, werewolves, web comics, lovey-doves vignettes, and/or goth girls (and the werewolf boyfriend is definitely cute too!) then you are the ideal reader for this book. I will likely buy a hard copy when it comes out and it’s definitely going to be a gift for someone at some point. Fun little read.

Thank you NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for providing me with an ARC of Fangs in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

The Gist

I hear about Anderson’s new comic story from her Instagram account. She posted weekly – I think – snippets of the whole story until it was complete on her website.

I meant to keep track of them, but lost track of time. So, when I saw the entire story was available for request on NetGalley, I jumped at the chance.

I enjoyed all of Anderson’s previous work and was curious what she would come up this time.

The Details

A love story between a vampire and a werewolf. And no, there is no hint of the teen angst or drama we have become so familiar with from other, previous stories featuring these legendary creatures.

I like the minimalist approach, so to speak. There were clean lines and not too much shading to overcrowd the frames. The eye was directed towards the main point of the story in each frame.

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words and in the case of this comic story, the author perfectly accomplished it.

I would catch myself looking at certain frames, certain pictures and say to myself “yes, that captures the emotion/message impeccably”.

The Verdict

Overall, this was such a cute story, I adored it. Call me greedy, but I just wished it could have been a little longer.

Another great story by the amazing Sarah Anderson.

This was so cute! I rarely read graphic novels, I think because I prefer to imagine things myself and get distracted by the imagery instead of enjoying it. However, I'd seen snippets of this one online and had to read it, and I'm so happy I did! Each part had me smirking, snickering, and even throwing out an occasional 'aw'. Jimmy and Elsie are perfect together and so playful with their differences, and you can imagine how it reflects the differences of a non-supernatural relationship and makes you consider how one can be light-hearted, playful and considerate with their partner. Overall, this graphic novel was funny, witty, adorable, and well done! I'd love to see Sarah Andersen give us another supernatural couple.

Tale as old as time - boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, then the fun of a real life relationship ensues. Only this time, the boy is a werewolf, the girl is a vampire, and there's so much more than just cohabitation issues.

This is the cutest thing I’ve read in a while. Elsie, the vampire, and Jimmy, the werewolf, are relationship goals. Every page made me smile.
I’ve already read a bunch of these are they’ve been floating about the web for some time. But it was awesome to read them all in order.

The Sarah’s Scribbles girl as a three-hundred-year-old vampire.

Elsie/Vamp is a three-hundred-year-old, recently vegan vampire. Jimmy is a scruffy werewolf in search of love. He communes with nature and wants to have a baby; she worships Satan and blisters under the sun. Can these two crazy forever-kids make it work? Probably not – eternity is L-O-N-G – but the premise makes for a rather fun and quirky comic strip.

FANGS is brought to you by Sarah Andersen, the same ball of anxiety, depression, and self-doubt – oops, I mean genius! – behind SARAH'S SCRIBBLES, and it shows. Vamp almost feels like she could be the Sarah’s Scribbles girl, bitten by Dracula and left to marinate in earthen society for several centuries. The jokes are admittedly kind of cutesy and cliche, but I dug them just the same. Elsie and Jimmy are adorable together, and the star-crossed (yet weirdly simpatico) nature of their relationship provides plenty of fodder for Andersen’s campy one-liners.

As per the usual, I just wish the book was a little longer. 77 pages seems a little slim for 500+ years of combined life experiences, no?

A funny and dark humor romance of the best combination of werewolf and vampire! I did like the humor of the meet-cute and the relationship. For those that like a bit of sarcasm with their graphic novels, you will enjoy this! The only thing I wanted was more to keep on reading!

Fangs is adorable with humor that makes you chuckle and a romance between a vampire and a werewolf. It's not overly dramatic and plays with the stereotypes and tropes of the two supernatural beings very well. The two protagonists are understanding of the wants and needs of the other and they don't judge.

This book is just a weird, creepy, comfy hug.

Read the series on Tapas initially and enjoyed the character interaction. The mood is mostly light but you can't help but root for their relationship to work.
I was hoping for more complexity in the book version and wished we had more of their story, but ended the book just as satisfied as with the web comic series.

The art was simple but effective. The romance was cute and I really enjoyed the vampire and werewolf jokes. It's a quick and fun read, but I wish we would have gotten a little more character depth. The story felt like it only scratched the surface but it was entertaining none the less.

I love Sarah Andersen's Scribbles comics. I wasn't sure what I would think of this new and very different venture but it was wonderful. I just ordered a copy for my library.

My initial review of this book was simply "this book f*cks" because I needed to 1) read the book again, immediately, and 2) put my thoughts together before I wrote an official review. Honestly, this was such a fun and fantastic read. Yes, it was quick, but you have such a great time with it and you really could read this again and again, appreciating new things each time.

Jimmy is a werewolf, and Elsie is a vampire (she's 300, but looks 26, and don't you forget it); while you'd think their relationship would never work, opposites truly attract. Fangs is a wonderful exploration of a growing relationship, examining the fun, cute parts but also the awkwardness and unexpected pit falls. It's also a great reminder that even when we struggle with certain parts of ourselves, there is someone out there who will love us and appreciate us, with no reservations and no agenda. I really can't say enough good things about this book, what a treasure.

Cute, witty, and dark—I really enjoyed Fangs. It made me laugh out loud even if the jokes were a little punny. I really like the artistic style and how the pictures looked on the page.

If you spend any time on the internet then you're likely already familiar with the author of this graphic novel. Sarah Andersen is the author of the infamous Sarah's Scribbles, which are short relatable and funny comic strips involving a cartooned version of the author. Complete with the author's trademark humour, Fangs is very different from the Scribble's series both in its medium and content. The author takes a familiar concept but with a unique and intimate approach.

Fangs is a love story between a vampire and a werewolf. The story starts with their first date and then follows their lives as their romance progresses. It's a wonderfully simple concept and story with beautiful results. Each page is a scene in an of its self and presents a moment in time in this unique relationship. Some scenes are dark and reveal glimpses of the monsters that each of them can be but most scenes are cute, quirky, funny, romantic, and just downright delightful.

This modern take on a classic romantic theme details another side to the author's artistry and creative storytelling skills which step outside her previous style of comics. The story is immensely captivating and can speak to a wide range of readers with its content. You don't need to like the supernatural genre to appreciate the story and the characters that the author succinctly builds in this short but engaging graphic novel. The story touches on the nuisances of love and building a long and committed relationship with both its ups and downs, as well as the added intrigue of the supernatural realm and drawing on our natural curiosity of this sort of romance. The novel's presentation and engagement also makes you want to revisit the story again and again. I think my only wish with this story was that it was longer and that I wanted the story to continue further than it did.

A delightful love story, with a twist. Humor characteristic for Sarah's comics, funny and very inhabitable at the same time, even though the characters are supernatural in this case.

I'm a big fan of the many Sarah's Scribbles comics that I've seen online although I've never actually read through or purchased one of her books, and after reading Fangs I'm really questioning why! This was such a cute/weird/sweet love story between a vampire and a werewolf that had me laughing out loud and 'awwing' constantly as I read.

I admit to requesting this one without really looking at the blurb (oops) but that didn't affect my reading experience, although I was initially surprised that it wasn't a cohesive/'linear' love story but more snapshots of their relationship. Surprisingly though, you still get a good sense of how their relationship evolves over time. I loved how they found a strong connection to each other despite of or maybe even because of their very obvious differences and oddities. Although they're vampire and werewolf, they can still be completely at ease with each other and their 'true selves' that other people can't see. it was nice to see them explore these differences throughout their relationship and in that sense I think it's very relatable. Although there's none of the usual character development or plot it certainly didn't stop me from forming attachments to both characters and their relationship. They were so adorable and their love filled me up with warmth!
This is the perfect (and short) palette cleanser when you're between books/changing genres, or even for when you're just looking for something that'll give you the surprising warm fuzzies. I would definitely recommend if you're a fan of Sarah's work (or if you haven't experienced her awesome yet)!

This was an extremely cute and fun comic. I really enjoyed the art style, and the simplicity of it all being done in black and white. Really enjoyed that all the comics are just simply short scenes of the couples every day life, where despite them being short you get to understand so much about them and their relationship. I also just adored the amount of detail put into all of Elsie's outfits!

I’m going to give this 3.5 stars and round up on the actual stars.

FANGS was sweet, funny, and relatable (not in the vampire way.) Nothing surprising there. I was very excited about this book once I saw it was written by Sarah Anderson, and DOUBLY excited once I read the blurb. Vamp/werewolf romance?! Um, yes.

The thing is I think I misunderstood “chronicles” which is totally on me. I was expecting more story and meat than what I got. It really felt more like snapshots of scenes in their overall story.

However, I did adore everything I did get. It was very much on par with her Sarah’s Scribbles which I am hooked on.

Elsie is a 300 year old vampire who meets a Jimmy at a bar, who turns out to be a werewolf. They hit it off and decide to see where things go while learning about each other in the process. Like I said earlier it’s relatable because aren’t all relationships an experiment in the beginning? I loved how they were receptive to each other quirks.

The art in this is so beautiful. With lots of details you notice more on the second read. I gobbled this up in one night. This read was a really good change of pace for me.

Thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
