Rethinking Competitive Advantage discusses the successful digitalization and ecosystem strategies adapted by many of the most successful tech and high growth companies. This book is especially useful for people already versed in business strategy and who are aware of ideas like Porter's Five Forces and core competencies. Charan argues that a new system of competitive advantage based on the digital ecosystem is taking the place of these largely obsolete ideas. His development of the digital ecosystem idea is what makes the book most helpful for its readers. Many chapters contain case studies and examples of tech and non-tech companies who have adapted this strategy. My primary complaint for this book is the amount of time spent in the early chapters on the success of large tech companies, which reads more like a newspaper article and does not break new ground. Overall, Charan is successful in describing new ideas of competitive advantage and how they are being implemented within companies. I recommend the book for entrepreneurs and businesspeople interested in learning about competitive advantage in a digital world.
