There were interesting tidbits in the book, and there was noted research and data presented. However, most of it seemed like common knowledge. Maybe it's just common knowledge to me, and would be new information to others. Overall I didn't find the book thought provoking or engaging.

This book’s timing is impeccable. With the world’s eye turned to racial and other types of discrimination, Katherine Kinzler looks at how we speak, and how our accents both unite and divide us.

How you say it is an in-depth look at how language creates community, and how separates them. Well-written and authoritative, you’ll find lots of real-world examples and explore a fascinating premise.

Kinzler clearly explains linguistic concepts, on which she then builds compelling arguments. Easy to read and understand, the book neither over-simplifies nor obfuscates. The author examines how, from the moment we are born, our individual accent determines how we define and are defined by in-groups and out-groups. She explains how this mechanism operated tens of thousands of years before what we think of as racial differentiation occurred, and how it continues to influence us sub-consciously every day.

In these times when our society is grappling with fundamental questions of fairness and discrimination, this book describes a clear and compelling path that we can all choose to walk.

Consider this book if you run a non-fiction book club (the discussions will be fascinating!) or if you enjoy curling up with a good idea.
