I absolutely adored This Heiress Gets a Duke, especially the pivot from traditional storylines within the historical fiction genre. Having an American household settle in Britain, use their wealth to capture a reputable man to aid in their business endeavours, while the daughters are being pressured to marry, truly made this novel a pleasure to read.

Having been the first book I picked up of Harper St. George, I can openly admit that it exceeded any expectations I had regarding it. George managed to insert many of the rules that governed society in Britain while simultaneously building upon the chemistry being presented between August Crenshaw and Evan Sterling, the Duke of Rothschild. The author also managed to make rather old tropes feel fresh and innovative. An overall amazing read!

BOOK REVIEW: The Heiress Gets A Duke by Harper St. George (The Gilded Age Heiresses Series)

Absolutely loved this one!

Very modern female lead with just enough romance angst to keep the home fires burning with a T.I.M.E. Jalapeno Rating: 🌶 (Mild Spicy). Enough of the "racy factor" to tip over into a spicy romance without the "yikes" factor!... Perfect for historical romance readers who want a great romance with a touch of spice that seasons the story to the "just right" Goldilocks temperature...

Book 2 (The Devil And The Heiress) was just released in July 2021 with Book 3 (The Lady Tempts An Heir) scheduled to be released in February 2022... Although these books can work as "stand alone" reads, I highly recommend that you read the series in order to be "carried away" with the next book seamlessly... I mean when seams are about to be ripped, no one wants to have to stop and go back to catch up on the foreplay, right?... ✨😎✨

3.5 stars

The synopsis of this historical romance really reeled me in and the beginning of this sweet light-hearted read was all I could have hoped it to be. The second half, however, fell flat as all the suspense and mystery fizzled out early.

The beauty of romance novels is they give the expected happy ending one can never be sure of elsewhere. It's an escape to a controlled world where the heroine ends up with the hero and everyone lives happily ever after. However, part of the joy of reading romances is the *tension* authors weave to get you there. Harper St. George, while creating a compelling premise, let the tension up a little too soon making the second half of the novel feeling pretty blah and lacking the sparkle romances typically hold.

A breezy read if you like historical romances, and while I didn't love it, you can bet I'll be reading the rest in the series.

Thanks to NetGalley for access to this book.

Thank you to Net Galley and Berkley Publishing for the chance to read this one. I'm way past the publishing date at this point but sharing my review anyway.

I decided I wanted to give this one a read because there seemed to be a lot of buzz about it on Bookstagram. I had not previously read anything else by this author but people seemed genuinely excited about its release and I love a good romance. I was not disappointed.

I thought the chemistry between the characters was fabulous. Talk about sexual tension! I think my favorite thing about the book overall is that we get to hear a lot of the story from Evan's point of view. I don't often find in romances that you get the male love interest's point of view, and I found it absolutely fascinating. It really made the story that much more interesting to me and I believe helped to better understand the characters. I do feel like I could have gotten to know the main character, August, slightly more than I did. For some reason I felt like I knew Evan better than I knew her. But I still loved the story and enjoyed the ride and this didn't detract at all from the experience for me.

I thought the story was well written as well. St. George has a wonderful way with words that kept the story moving along and held my attention from the first page to the last. My only other request was that there were perhaps a few more "steamy" scenes because the ones that were there were so good and well written that I was left wanting more.

I thought it wrapped up nicely with a very sweet ending. I very much enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading more books in the series and others by this author!

I was really excited for The Heiress Gets a Duke, the cover is absolutely gorgeous and the synopsis sounded so intriguing. I liked the first part of the story, but somewhere along the way I lost interest a few months ago and haven't picked it back up since. I hope once I'm in more of a historical romance mood I can get into this series. DNF for now.

Y’all know my newly discovered love for historical romance, and The Heiress Gets a Duke has been on my radar for months. It was SOOO good! It’s about a strong, independent girl who works for her family’s successful business during the 19th century. Her parents decide to marry her off to a Duke, which she is completely against....until she falls in love with him. 🥰 It is the perfect book to read if you’re not 100% sold on reading historical fiction because it’s written in an easy to understand/follow way. I am just loving this one! 🥰🥰🥰

I love a good romance. Add in heiresses and dukes and extravagant wealth, and I am generally sold. When I had the chance to read The Heiress Gets a Duke by Harper St. George, I was delighted to dive into a lesser explored time period with The Gilded Age and to get to know fiery damsel August and the full cast of characters here.

Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for sharing this book with me. All thoughts are my own.

Thank you so much to Berkley Pub for this earc!

This book was wonderful!!! I’m a huge fan of Historical Romances and this book was everything I wanted

When you think you’ll get another “falling for the wrong sister” plot you get “right people, wrong time”

I really liked August most of the time. She is a strong woman who wants to make her own way, which is impossible. I liked that was written as a smart business woman ahead of her time. But at the same time all the things that made her awesome also made her super stubborn when it came to Evan. There were a few things when she was a little bit too stubborn but overall story definitely overpowered that

Evan was an amazing male lead. I loved that he never pretended to be anyone else. I loved that he expected that even though he had to marry August, he still did everything in his power to make her happy. That part gave him ALL the points.

August’s parents were bunch of idiots who just didn’t see that if only they gave these two more time, they could have avoided all the problems

Overall, a great book with a perfectly hot romance and a happy ending.

This was a story that I was happy to read! It was an entertaining story and likable characters. I like her little ploys and his determination. They came together to make a great read! I recommend this book to anyone who likes spirited characters.

I love a beautiful dress as much as the next girlie girl and the gold dress on the cover of The Heiress Gets A Duke made me 🤩.

The Heiress Gets a Duke is an historical romance novel that tackles some societal problems that were a apparent back then (and even some today). And who doesn’t love a good enemies to lovers trope?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Four stars for me simply because I got a little irritated with August a few times; she seemed to fight too much against her own emotions. Also, I like my romantic novels a smidge spicier. But, I did thoroughly enjoy this one and will definitely be ready the next in the series!

I wondered if I would enjoy this one. Well it was just delicious. Just love a strong woman that knows her mind. Lots of steamy parts too. Can't wait to see what's next!

I enjoyed this read. There was time for the hero and heroine to foster a relationship and I enjoyed both characters. August is a worker heroine and enjoys what she does. She is strong and knows what she wants and that is not a husband. Evan needs an heiress since he inherited a broke estate and originally is to be betrothed to August's sister, until he meets her.

A fun story. I look forward to more in the series.

This is a new historical romance writer for me and I enjoyed it so much that I have already procured a copy of the next novel, in the hopes that it follows August's sister (or brother). In this particular novel, we have an American mother, in particular (though abetted by the father), who wants to rise above her New Money station and she sees an opportunity by marrying off a daughter to a Duke. And, we have a Duke whose family is in dire financial straits and needs the funds marrying an American heiress could provide. So as you can see, these two families can each fulfill a desire or a need of the other. The only problem? The potential bride in question wants nothing to do with it....so we're off on an adventure of figuring out how these two families will find their HEA.

One of the things I enjoyed about this particular historical romance was how independent our heroine, August was. She was raised and allowed to pursue her interest in the family business and so she was reticent to give that up. She liked her freedom and the respect she felt her position gave her--more so than your average woman in that time. I also enjoyed that Rothschild (Evan), found her spirit and independence as positives and had no desire to see those things stripped from her. While there things about both of them that were annoying and frustrating, that they were evolved and on the same page about progressing the rights of those around them was refreshing. These were no simpering fools.

I also enjoyed that the writer made me love to hate August's mom and dad the more they revealed who they were. I loved that undercurrent of conflict and how August just refused to capitulate...or Evan refused to let her; even before they were officially a 'team', they were a team.

There were a few parts that felt a little slow, but maybe I was just eager to see them end up together? And this was definitely a s-l-o-w burn so if you don't have the patience for that, know that upfront. All that being said, though, I'm eager to read another one.

The Heiress Gets a Duke by Harper St. George is a slow burn romance with a modern, headstrong heroine who has a a talent for business and a feminist sensibility. She meets a hero who is drowning in debt, has a talent in the boxing ring, a sexy smolder, and an endearing sense of honor. Enter an arranged marriage, a bicker/banter/kiss relationship set in a lush and vivid Victorian England, and you'll get a knock out novel that Netflix should definitely look into!

In this enchanting marriage of convenience, we follow an American heiress and the British duke whose banter is just the beginning of their match made in.. well, you’ll see.

This fast-paced historical is one of many that I’ve devoured recently. And let me say the cover doesn’t disappoint! I wouldn’t say that I was over-the-moon after reading this book, but the characters were such a cute, nightly entertainment that I couldn’t put down.

What I Liked:
-strong, independent characters
-centered around an American-based family (you almost never see those in historicals)
-the family business
-fun, sizzling romance

What I Didn’t Like:
-typical regency vibes
-can be a bit slow-paced

In the end, I give this one a solid 3 out of 5 stars. I’d recommend this debut for readers who adore historical romances!

This was one of those romances I needed to read right when I needed to read it. The opening meet-cute at the underground boxing match was fabulous, and I was incredibly appreciative of August as a heroine and her unwillingness to compromise her independence for marriage. One of the best parts of the narrative for me involved a clear delineation between her and Evan falling in lust versus actually falling in love and developing the emotional connection beneath it, and this was a story that (even though it took me weeks to finish because of new job/other reading) always proved difficult to put down. The late-stage misunderstanding was a little lacking for me, but I enjoyed the book so much overall that it didn’t really ruin my reading experience.

Look in a romance I need to like the characters and I did not like August or Evan. This had potential, but it did not work for me.

Although, if you liked all the boxing in Bridgerton, maybe try this one?

I'm really sad I did not like this one. I was hoping for a twist on all the historical romances that I've been reading lately, but I was not a fan of the characters at all.

Also, this is petty, but August and Evan for historical names? Not that they didn't exist, but they both felt too modern.

If you devoured Bridgerton, in book and/or tv form, and are in need of your next great read, check out this first in a new series! Featuring a headstrong heroine, marriages of convenience, new vs old money, and a duke who boxes Get ready to swoon.

Absolutely loved this book and look forward to reading the second in the series. Perfect for Joanna Shupe fans.

The New York Crenshaws are new money. Having made their fortune in railroads, much of the world is at their disposal. But without a certain pedigree, the Crenshaws will never truly have access to the pinnacle of high society. August Crenshaw is horrified when her friend Camille is forced into a marriage of convenience with a titled Brit several years her senior. August vows to avoid such an arrangement, dreaming instead of a day when she may manage her family’s rail business. Evan Sterling, the Duke of Rothschild, is the head of a financially failing family. His mother and sisters require care a title alone cannot provide. To prop up his estate, he needs money. Money a marriage to a certain American heiress could provide.

Perhaps it’s the Bridgerton influence, but I cannot get enough of historical romance these days. I’ve read the steamiest erotica around, but if I’m deep in a historical romance and a bare hand so much as brushes a bare wrist (gasp), I’m a puddle. If a pair is unchaperoned? I’m riveted. I know. It’s messed up. But there’s something to be said for the glacial pace of romance in these stories. The tension is off the hook. This is incredibly rewarding if there’s an adequate payoff. Harper delivers 100 percent.

The infusion of feminist ideals in The Heiress Gets a Duke, while likely inaccurate from a historical perspective, lends a fresh view for contemporary readers. August is relatable in her goals for intellectual challenge and independence. Because the Duke of Rothschild is rather altruistic in his motives, we can quickly forgive his fortune-hunting ways.

The Heiress Gets a Duke is a charming, wonderful read. I was enchanted from beginning to end by the sumptuous settings, relatable characters, and entrancing relationship dynamics. I was genuinely disappointed when the novel concluded as I wanted the story to continue. The good news is, this is the premier installment in a series. The Devil and Heiress, The Gilded Age Heiresses #2 is slated for June release.
