In this first book of the Kimberly King series, Adler introduces us to a complex woman with a history she's trying to outrun. As a single mother, Kimberly has moved away from the big city and heartache to the small town of Dead Woman Crossing, OK. Her mother and step-father live there, and Kimberly finds a temporary home with them as she begins her job as Detective in this small town. Her hopes of raising a child in a peaceful small town are quickly undone by the murder of a woman that shares characteristics with the cold case that gave the town its unusual name. Working with the town's Sheriff, Kimberly works the case and follows the clues wherever they lead her. The end is completely unexpected, and I can't wait to read the next book.

OVERALL- a really enjoyable twisty start to a new series!

REVIEW- Kimberly King is the new Deputy Chief in the Sheriffs Office in Dead Woman’s Crossing, Oklahoma. Kimberley hopes this will be a new start for her and her daughter Jessica, leaving behind the bad memories of the city. Within days of starting her new post, Kimberley is called to a murder which had similarities to the unsolved murder of Katie James in 1905 to which the town is name after. Teaming up with Sheriff Sam Walker, Kimberley begins trying to solve a murder in a town mistrustful of outsiders.
The first thing I noticed about this book is the authors style of writing. This is the 2nd book I’ve read by the author and I just find her writing so nice and easy to read - one of those who could make an instruction manual interesting! She just makes the book so warm, welcoming and comforting it’s a really nice quality that you don’t find very often. As for the story, I really like the lead character Kimberley King. She’s instantly a nice character who is easy to relate to and you will her to do well which is always what you want the readers to feel for your lead character.
The location was so perfect for this story and based on a real place and back story which is also really interesting. I’ve never been but I feel I’ve seen some of it now through this book descriptions.
The story lays heavy on the domestics and at times you feel a little on the edge of it being too much but I actually think, being a first in the series, it’s really needed in order to introduce Kimberley, her back story, how she ended up where she has, who the team are and her family. I felt there is so much more to this character which will hopefully come out as the series develops. Otherwise, the story was presented well with twist and turns and worked to a satisfactory conclusion. I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next instalment!
Thank you to #netgalley, #jradler and #bookouture for allowing me read this one early!

Another great novel!

You have to read this if you are a fan of well-written suspense that leaves you breathlessly turning the pages. Dead Woman Crossing by J.R. Adler exceeded my expectations, and I can’t wait for what this author writes next. Maybe I should back up and tell you a little about this story first.

When you have a town called Dead Woman Crossing, plus a dead body that looks like a copycat murder from something that happened twenty years ago, you know the book will be good. Detective Kimberley King moves to the small town of Dead Woman Crossing with her infant daughter. She wants her little girl to grow up near her mother and get away from the harsh lifestyle of a police officer on the NYPD. She hopes this town will be sleepy and boring enough to raise her child in peace.

What she doesn’t expect is a town of secrets and questions surrounding the death of a young mother named Hannah.

Check it out:

Haunted by the serial killer she never caught, Detective Kimberley King leaves her job in New York and relocates to the sleepy town of Dead Woman Crossing, Oklahoma. Kimberley hopes to bring her daughter Jessica up close to her family, far from the bad memories the city holds. But her quiet new home is not the peaceful place she dreamed of. Within days of her arrival, Kimberley is called to the scene of a terrible crime: her friend Hannah, a single mother, has been brutally murdered, her one-year-old daughter the only witness.

Kimberley can’t ignore the similarity of Hannah’s death to that of Katie James, a young woman who was murdered in 1905 on the banks of the same twisting creek. Dead Woman Crossing is named after her, and it seems someone is drawing inspiration from the crime. Could this killer be a copycat?

Teaming up with Sheriff Sam Walker, Kimberley struggles to make headway with Hannah’s murder. In a small town, people don’t talk to outsiders and Kimberley has a hard time gaining trust, even within her own family. Kimberley isn’t afraid to ask questions, but when she receives a threatening note, she realises that, as a single mother to a young daughter, she might be putting herself dangerously in the killer’s sights…

The setting, the characters, the writing, I loved it all. This was such a brilliant book, the town was written with so much detail, I almost wanted to go find a little town like it and move. The mystery of Hannah kept me reading well into the night and the next morning until I was done. Now I want to read more from the author!

This will be published on September 23, pre-order here,

It’s only ninety-nine cents for the Kindle version, which is too good of a deal to pass up!

This book is the first in a new series about Detective Kimberley King. Single mother Kimberley moves from New York to Oklahoma with her baby daughter, Jessica, She is going to live in the small town of Dead Woman Crossing to be near her mother, Nicole and her new stepfather, David.
The town’s strange is name comes from a murder that occurred there in the early 1900s and it immediately set alarm bells ringing for me!
Kimberley is taking up a position in the local police department and she is looking forward to a quieter life, escaping New York and an unsolved murder that haunts her. However her new home is anything but peaceful and when a murder occurs Kimberley resolves to solve it. Could the murderer from long ago have returned or is there a copy cat killer about?
I enjoyed this crime thriller and the character of Kimberley who is a tough cookie, determined to stand on her own two feet after being let down by Jessica’s father.
The theme of violent and misogynistic men is examined in detail with reference to Kimberley’s late father and then with other male characters in the book including one of the police officers in Kimberley’s Department
The gradual developing friendship between Kimberley and her boss Sheriff Sam Walker gave promise of what is to come in future books in the series. Is a romance on the cards?
This was a compelling read with some interesting characterisations and it certainly left me wanting to read more about Kimberley, Sam and Dead Woman Crossing.

This is a good start to a new series and I enjoyed it so would read book two.
Detective Kimberley King moves from NYC to take a job with the local sheriffs department and to bring up her daughter Jessica near her mother. She moves in with her Mother and her new stepdad.
Everything starts well but days later a young mother is murdered replicating the a historical murder that the town is named after.
I liked all the characters and the conclusion to the story. The characters are all intriguing enough that I want to learn more about them.

Police thriller set in small town USA. A murder of a young woman is discovered which exactly replicates one from years before. Can the new detective solve the mystery? A good read.

Pretty good read. It started slow for me and didnt have much depth to the story. I wanted to like it but I get bored when the story drags on. However, I did stick to it and it picked up towards the middle. Good characters and plot.

Thank you Netgalley, the author and publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

What I thought was going to be a book that I would just maybe like I ended up loving! It was very slow to start it didn't captivate me from the first chapters but I do suggest you hang in there like I did because you really get into the characters of this town. This book is more of a mystery to me not a thriller but I did enjoy getting to know the residents of Dead Woman Crossing, Oklahoma. Kimberly as soon as she leaves NYPD to work in a small town Sheriff's office has unfortunate luck her new friend Hannah Brown is murdered and it is up to her to piece the puzzle of who killed this single mom. Surprise twist, great characters and just enough of a mystery to keep you guessing. Kimberly King is a character I hope to follow thru many upcoming books because she is very likable! Great start to a new series!

This is a great start to a new series. A gripping mystery with strong characters and great writing. Lots of twists and turns kept me interested and I enjoyed the setting. Looking forward to reading more.

The first book in the series and the author seems to have spent a lot of pages on introduction and settling in. This makes it a slow starter. There is more of family drama than investigations. The second part of the story is good but the suspense is all revealed by happenstance. Hope the future books pick up. There is a side story of what happened in NYC but it is left hanging. Probably to be picked up later.

Really enjoyed this 1st in a new series even though I had it figured out 5% (according to my kindle) in to the story. but it definitely held my interest. I didn’t put the book down until I finished it.
I look forward to reading more in this series and seeing how the characters and their relationships develop. Maybe even learning more about the elusive serial killer from Chief Deputy Kings NYPD days?

Thank you #netgalley and #bookouture for the eARC.

A beautifully written novel, following the lives of the newly appointed Deputy Sheriff Kimberly King and her baby Jessica as they leave their fast past life in NYC for a more family driven, slower pace in Idaho.

Whilst I enjoyed this book, I found the pace in which the story was set a bit slow. The book felt more like a family drama than police procedural crime fiction. Whilst focusing on Kimberly’s transition to Oklahoma the story is peppered with her NUC backstory and true reason for change - although exciting to read it didn’t resolve itself in anyway.

Unfortunately I guessed the plot twist of this particular novel. And whilst that didn’t deter me from enjoying it. The book overall just didn’t do ‘it’ for me.

Thanks to NetGalley for my advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

An excellent start to a new series!

Within days of her arrival, Kimberley is called to the scene of a terrible murder of a young mother. Kimberley can’t ignore the similarity of the current murder to that of another young woman who was murdered in 1905 on the banks of the same twisting creek.

In a town where news spreads like wildfire, Kimberley has a hard time gaining trust and answers. But with the help of Sheriff Sam Walker, she needs to find the killer before the killer targets her next.

I just loved the main characters of Detective Kimberley King and Sheriff Sam. Kimberly's daughter Jessica is just so adorable. And Barb, is one character that just lights up anyone's face with a smile thanks to her amazing personality.

Even though I had few doubts about who the killer could be right at the beginning, I enjoyed reading this. It was fast paced and well written. The plot flowed smoothly, so I couldn't stop reading till I finished.

Definitely looking forward to the next book in this series!

Thank You to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!

A crime thriller with masterful twists.
Kimberly King is going to Oklahoma which is a city in which she's hoping to raise Jessica, her daughter close to her family. She left her detective job in New York to live a peaceful life but that's not possible in Oklahoma.
One doesn't know what's going to happen in their lives and Kimberly is a perfect example of this.
After a few days of moving in Oklahoma, she's called to a serious crime scene where a woman is viciously murdered and there's only one witness, her one year old daughter.
This gives Kimberly a shock. Because that woman was named Hannah and she was her good friend.
Further investigations tells that a killer is on the loose who is killing similar to a killer who killed in 1905 in the same city.
Is this killer a copycat? Or there is something more sinister waiting for Kimberly King?
I adored the character of Kimberly King. She's lovely, caring and a good detective. I also loved Jessica.
The author is good in describing serious crime scenes and I must say that Kimberly King will become a milestone in the list of detectives we have.
Characters were twisty, intersting.
Narration of the story is flawless and is the greatest strength of the story.
I'll definitely tell all my fellow authors and bloggers to read this book.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me an advance copy of this awesome crime thriller.

Really enjoyed this book, can’t wait for the next one in the series. It was unputdownable I read it in one sitting. It was tense and full of action that kept me entertained and engaged in the story. I had my suspicions but I was wrong, love that when you don’t expect the bad guy or the ending. Very good book and I highly recommend!
