Step into the whimsical world of "Super Detectives!" by Cale Atkinson, where a ghost and a kid form an extraordinary duo to unravel mysteries and, of course, have a ton of fun! If you're on the lookout for a charming middle-grade graphic novel filled with mystery and excitement, your search ends here.

Right from the start, "Super Detectives" hooked me with its irresistibly cute and entertaining vibe. The vibrant colors draw you in, setting the stage for a story that's both sweet and captivating. It's the kind of graphic novel that effortlessly grabs the attention of young readers, reminiscent of the joy I felt reading Cam Jansen mysteries back in the day.

Simon, the ghost, steals the show with his sassy and lovable personality. Imagine a playful mix of Casper the ghost and Sherlock Holmes – an absolute delight! The dynamic between Simon and Chester, the boy, creates a unique and endearing partnership that adds a special charm to the storyline.

One delightful standout is the POWER POSE! It adds a playful touch to the narrative, enhancing the overall fun of the reading experience.

In summary, "Super Detectives!" is a fantastic graphic novel for middle graders, striking the perfect balance – not too long, just right for an engaging read. The MYSTERY OF A LIFETIME unfolds alongside delightful snacks, making it an entertaining journey for young readers.

For those in search of humor, mystery, and fantastic illustrations, this graphic novel is a fantastic pick. I comfortably rate it four out of five stars – a testament to its charm and the joy it brings to young readers.

This silly book tells the story of Simon & Chester becoming detectives and trying to solve their first case.

It is quite a silly book and I think kids who are into humorous graphic novels would really enjoy it.

Chester has dark brown skin and lives with his grandmother who also has brown skin.

A new, funny beginning graphic novel! Nic and his ghost friend Simon are bored so they dress up and pretend to be detectives. The friends advertise but no one shows up -- except a mysterious pug who doesn't belong to them. Who is the pug? The detectives ask around and follow clues -- and it's hilarious!

Super Detectives (Simon and Chester Book #1) by Cale Atkinson is one that I will absolutely add to a classroom library and in book club sets for students. Cale has done it again with his illustrations and creative story line. This beginner graphic novel reminded me of Bad Guys and would be a great transition book to books like Dog Man.

This was a super cute comic! The colors were vibrant and I really enjoyed the art style. The plot was a little simple, but that's likely because it's audience is elementary school kids. This could be a really cute series to follow!

This is a darling little book for kids. The bright colors of the graphics will hold their attention, and the interaction between the characters and their antics will bring smiles and laughter to all. This is a fun and quick read. Looking forward to more adventures with Simon and Chester. Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book.

Chester is an average boy whose best friend just happens to be a ghost named Simon. Readers may recognize this pair from Cale Atkinson's 2018 picture book, ‘Sir Simon: Super Scarer,’ which establishes the origins of their friendship: Simon, a professional ghost, is transferred to Chester and his grandmother's house but gives up this haunting gig in favor of simply becoming Chester's pal.

In this first graphic novel for them, Chester is bored one rainy day and looking for something fun to do. He convinces Simon to join him digging around in the attic for costumes to play with. Personally Simon would rather be writing his mystery novel but humors Chester in his endeavour.

It's elementary to deduce what they will be doing after they discover a deerstalker hat, but first they must find a case to solve. Cue one adorable stray pug, unanswered questions and a houseful of clues. Now the game is afoot!

Simon goes to extreme measures to figure out these clues, even connecting them with yarn on an elaborate bulletin board, while Chester takes a more straightforward approach: checking to see if the pug has a collar and canvasing the neighborhood. Their different styles of reasoning may test the limits of their friendship. Further clues to the mystery are sprinkled throughout the story for our benefit.

I loved the art in this book, done in graphic novel style panels. The story was fun and enjoyable. I like that Cale Atkinson was responsible for both. This is one book I'll happily pick up in print for my grandchildren.

Cale Atkinson's books have easily become favorites in my home and classroom. Readers can't help but love Simon the ghost, and he certainly doesn't disappoint in this new story. Chester is bored and wants Simon to play. Simon is busy writing, but when Chester finds boxes of dress up clothes, he can't help but be inspired by what he sees. Readers will laugh as they follow the adventure Simon and Chester embark on together. The graphic format will appeal to many young readers.

This is a cute graphic novel, starring characters introduced in Atkinson's picture book Sir Simon: Super Scarer. On an afternoon filled with boredom, Chester (a boy) and Simon (a ghost) decide to become detectives, and get to work starting up a detective agency in the attic. Soon they find their first case in the kitchen, devouring a box of cereal- The Case of the Mysterious Pug! Where did the pug come from? Who does it belong to? How can it be so squishy? Find the answers to these questions and more in this fun story! The artwork is really cute too!

Simon and Chester became favorite characters in the authors picture book about the two. Now that they have their own new graphic novel series, my kids are pumped!
Simon and Chester have such a humorous relationship and I love that they are taking on new adventures together.

Simon and Chester are two normal friends looking for something to chase away the boredom. Except one of them is a ghost. When they decide to dress up in the clothing from grandma' theater days, they end up looking just like detectives. They decide to find a mystery to solve and find one in their kitchen when they go for a snack: a super cute pug puppy who is missing its owner.

A very cute graphic novel geared towards younger readers. This will be a good addition to my graphic novel collection.

Sir Simon is one of my daughter's favourite picture books so I was very excited to see that Chester and Simon were back and this time in a graphic novel! We had so much fun reading this story about these two budding detectives on the hunt for their first big case. A great sense of humour, a fun story, and wonderfully illustrated; this was great!

Super Detectives continues on from Atkinson's Sir Simon Super Scarer, where the two protagonists, Simon and Chester, met and became friends.
The comedic duo now star in their own graphic novel series. This is the first.
Simon is busy working on his detective novel when Chester, bored as can be, begins bugging him. Simon remains focused so Chester digs into boxes in the attic He ends up discovering a Sherlock Holmes style hat. This excites Simon who decides they should become detectives. After finding proper attire for both of them and setting up their 'office,' they wait for clients to show up. Eventually they head off in search of a mystery to solve. They end up finding a dog in the house and set off to find the owner. Well, Chester comes up with a plan while Sir Simon gets carried away with speculation about the poor pup.
The book is loaded with humour. Chester plays straight man to Simon's outlandishness. The images are a treasure trove of wit. To fully appreciate all the bits of fun, you almost need to pore over the pages. Children might not get the film noir hints in this, but as a fan of the classic detective genre, I enjoyed them.
This charming little graphic novel is ideal for young students ready to move on to graphic novels. It will also make a fun read aloud between parent and child.

The only thing I can say about this book is that it was a cute read. It reminded me of my younger self. Playing pretend with my imaginary friend. Using my imagination to create all sorts of wild stories. It was just a fun read. Great for kids.

Cute graphic novel about a little boy and his resident ghost that decided to become detectives. Children and early middle grade kids will like this best, but it is a really fun read for all ages. I would absolutely buy this for the kids in my life.

Cale Atkinson is one of my favorite children’s authors/illustrators. His Unicorns 101 and Sir Simon are wonderfully funny and adorable. Simon & Chester’s return in graphic novel form is as fabulous as his other works. This definitely had everything - a mystery, funny lines and cookies!

This was absolutely adorable! This was a fun and quick read! The illustrations are full of colour and details. Simon is sassy, hilarious and loves mysteries. Chester wants attention and things to do! This is how their first adventure starts… Chester is bored and goes through his grandma’s theater paraphernelia… then he finds what looks suspiciously like Sherlock Holmes’ hat and Simon is hooked! They want to become famous detectives and solve many mysteries… it doesn’t go quite as planned of course.

The only thing missing is I would have liked to know how Simon and Chester met and how they became friends.

The author being Canadian was a nice surprise, since most popular graphic novels come from the US. Can’t wait to introduce this to my students (I hope it gets translated to French)!

Super Detectives (Simon and Chester Book #1) by Cale Atkinson will be published on February 9th, 2021 by Tundra Books (NY). A book 2 is expected in September of this year.

Review to come on February 6th to blog/goodreads.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review~

OK, this was just too cute and too much fun to read! I was already hoping that it would be that, but it was even cuter than I thought! I had so much fun reading about Chester (human boy) and Simon (a ghost). There are cookies, pugs, mystery, and more!

This book begins when Chester is bored out of his mind, Simon however is busy writing his novel (which sounds pretty great and I wouldn't mind reading it). Chester decides to find something for both of them to do and so they become detectives! I loved seeing them get the appropriate attire, the perfect lighting, and other things to make everything real. They are both, well, OK, Simon particularly very dedicated to this cause!

I had so much fun seeing Chester and Simon try to find out where Roy or Von Curly Tail have come from and who his owner was. It was such a fun case and I loved seeing them make posters, find people, bag clues (though I think neither of them wanted that poo), and more. I had my suspicion on Roy, well, two suspicions and I had fun seeing one of them indeed come true!

I want to know more about how these two met. Who is Simon, or better said, who was Simon. How can he do all these things like typing, and wearing clothes, and such? How can people see him?  Why is Chester living with his grandmother? And I got a few other questions, I hope that in the next volumes, yes I am hoping for more, we will get some answers.

The art is just so much fun, I loved how the characters were drawn, their expressions, and OMG that pug is just too cute!

I flew through this book, it was just delightful! I love their friendship and I cannot wait to see what is next for them! Please make more books about this duo!

ARC copy...it is cute and I would suggest early reader level because of its short length + no so scary themes despite...Simon is too cute to be scary.

Sir Simon: Super Scarer is one of my favorite picture books so I was so delighted to find out ghost Simon and human pal Chester are continuing their adventures in a graphic novel series. In this first book, Simon is in the midst of writing his great mystery novel but Chester is utterly bored. Chester begins searching through his grandma’s boxes in the attic and uncovers old costumes and props. None of Chester’s finds pique Simon’s interest until Chester sports an old hat. The writing of his mystery can wait–Simon and Chester can be real detectives solving a real case! After designing a cool logo, advertising, and creating a cool office with moody lightning, they are ready for the first client to walk through the door. Except no one comes knocking. No worries! Perhaps they can find a case. And when they hear a noise downstairs, their excitement rises and discover a cute little pug in the kitchen. Can Simon and Chester solve the case of the mysterious pug? Read Super Detectives to find out!

With witty dialogue and lively illustrations which show Simon’s over the top dramatics, Atkinson clearly delivers with this spinoff. I love this dynamic duo because excitable Simon always has these grandiose ideas and calm Chester is the voice of reason. Together they make a perfect pair. Thanks to Tundra Books/Penguin Random House and NetGalley for the eARC. Super Detectives releases on February 9, 2021 and Super Sleepover (Book 2) publishes in September 2021.
