Highly entertaining and a good go to comfort read. These are the books I like to come home to after a long day at work. Easy to slip into and do not require a lot from the reader. Charley Davidson is fun and quirky and gives me what I need in an easy read!

Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet begins about two months after Book 3 ends. Charley is still reeling from the torture she suffered at the hands of Earl Walker and the betrayal she feels knowing that Reyes used her as bait. On top of all of that, her father has her arrested while in the hospital, hoping to end her PI career for good. Charley has decided to deal with all this by really not dealing with it. Instead, she has stayed holed up in her apartment where she spends all of her time watching various home shopping networks and buying anything and everything that she sees.

Seriously concerned, her best friend, Cookie, Cookie's daughter, Amber, Charley's sister Gemma, and Charley and Gemma's uncle Ubie show up and attempt an intervention. With a little boost from her gang, Charley decides to get up and back at 'em. And ends up with a mysterious case brought to her by a woman named Harper Lowell. She is convinced that someone is stalking her and wants her dead.

As Charley begins investigating Harper's case, she's also feels the need to find out where Reyes is and what he's been doing since getting out of prison. It shocks her to find out that he's been dispatching demons back to whence they came in order to protect Charley. This makes it very difficult to stay mad at him for his role in her torture and near-death at the hands of Earl Walker.

Fourth Grave is another masterpiece by Darynda Jones. I absolutely love how she is able to write a mystery that is both suspenseful and humorous with both supernatural and paranormal aspects. Charley's penchant for naming her body parts, furniture, and vehicles gives the novel a lighter tone to sections of a rather dark book. We do get to see a different side of Charley in Book 4 that we haven't really witnessed in the previous books. As it should be, Charley doesn't come away from the horrors of Earl Walker unscathed. She's still snarky and sassy but she's also scared....of just about everything now. She has "THE" section of her apartment blocked off with boxes so that she can't see the spot where she was bound and tortured and her unease when people mess with the boxes in that area are very realistic.

The interwoven story lines continue as Charley deals with her PI business, her father and step-mother issues (really handing it to Denise in this book), her status as Grim Reaper (and what that means), and her inability to stay away from the Son of Satan - the ever hot, Reyes. I was really hoping more would develop between Charley and Donovan but that was not part of the agenda this time. Then again if Charley is destined to be with Reyes, the Donovan section in Fourth Grave was appropriate.

There wasn't anything about this book that I didn't like. The pacing was great, plot was strong, characters that are likable, and, there is an unlikely culprit in the PI case that Charley investigates in this novel.

By the way: Where can I get my own rottweiler ghost/guardian?

Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet by Darynda Jones is the fourth installment in the Grim Reaper series featuring Charley Davidson. With the love of her life, son of Satan, Reyes Farrow freed from prison and the man he was accused of murdering found to have been alive all the time, you would think Charley's life would be looking up. But not for this Grim Reaper.

Finding Farrow's human father and proving not only that Reye's didn't kill him and that he was an evil killer himself, did not come without cost. Charley is now holed up in her apartment, afraid to step outside after being tortured and nearly killed and ordering junk she cannot afford off the home shopping networks. She is feeling very betrayed by not only Reyes, but by her own father who had her arrested in hopes of keeping her from taking any more cases. Because not only is Charley the Grim Reaper, she is also a Private Detective. But right now, Charley is doing little of either.

But when a young woman shows up on Charley's doorstep, fearing that someone is stalking her and trying to kill her, the Grim Reaper knows it is time to go back to work. But as Charley investigates her client's claim, she finds that everyone who knows her client thinks that she is delusional. Could it be something as simple as her client being insane or is she really in danger.

But Charley has other problems to solve. Like Reyes Farrow and just what their relationship may mean to the world at large. He is the son of Satan but what is which the troop of demons that are trying to kill both him and Charley. There is so much Charley doesn't know when it comes to being the Grim Reaper, and there seems too much that Reyes is keeping from her. Secrets that could the whole of humanity at risk. And there is her father and his betrayal, and that purveying scent of death in the air where her family is concerned.

What I really like about this series is the growth and development of the main character Charley Davidson. These are novels that refuse to be taken too seriously as Charley doesn't allow her position as the Grim Reaper become too serious. But underneath it all is the drum beat of doom that sounds like a dead heart pumping. Charley is a terrific character and certainly not one you would think of as a Grim Reaper. Seriously, do you know of another Grim Reaper who would name her breasts, Danger and Will Robinson? No, the humor diffuses some of the darkness of these tales.

This fourth book shows Charley's very human side and she wrestles with her feelings for Reyes and the deeper fear of what he is and the danger he presents. There is also the sense of not belonging when it comes to her family. The step-child. The outsider. When all she had was her father and he turns on her.

The there is the case, the simple case of a delusional girl who thinks she is being stalked and under threat of death. Something that only Charley believes to be true.

This is a series that only gets better as it moves along, another terrific read!

Hidey-ho fellow SMPer! I'm just leaving a review that I don't want you to publish because I checked this book out via Netgalley and am trying to raise my score. I wish we could send ebooks from the MDL to our Kindle! Please don't post this publically haha! I didn't feel like it was honest to leave a review working for the company!

Really enjoying this series. It's a nice mix of steamy romance and paranormal. I recommend the audiobook version of this series since it seems to have more character feelings.

I'm going to write this review as a "series" review because, quite frankly, I binge read the whole series THIRTEEN books in one week. I literally couldn't put them down. When I read the last page of the last book, I wanted to cry.

Book one hooks you from the start. The world that Darynda built within this series is phenomenally creative. It's full of magic and mystery. The hero is the perfect anti-hero turned true hero that I've read in a long, long time. My heart broke for the trials and tribulations the hero and heroine went through to get to the end of the series. Calling it an emotional rollercoaster doesn't even cover the vast span of emotions that the author drags the reader through.

The only complaint I have is that the series ended.... there was a "the end" and I didn't want to be done yet. A complete must read for all PNR lovers!

A re-read thanks to a promotion by Netgalley for the final Charley Davidson book. I love this series and so happy to have it in my e-reader instead of getting a loan from the library.

I powered through Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet on a long stretch of watching my kid sleep off anesthesia. I'm not sure it was the best use of my time as people looked at me funny while I laughed, huffed in irritation, and got a little choked up in certain spots. Ms. Jones certainly knows her way around a turn of phrase...this book has some of the best lines. "Your existence gives me a headache. Go stand over there." Seriously? Hahaha, can I get this on a T-shirt? While this one wasn't my favorite in the series, I'm committed enough to keep going and will stay tuned to pick up another book while time allows in my reading schedule to see what her complex and innately well-developed characters are up to!

Another banger! this series just gets better and better. Charley is a great character in a story that is full paranormal awesomeness!

What can I say? This series is everything I never knew I wanted! It just keeps getting more entertaining with each book.

***Spoilers for prior books included below!***

So let's just recap. Reyes's earthly father (the man who raised him) tortured Charley at the end of Third Grave Dead Ahead because Reyes used her as bait. This mimics the exact same situation her father put her in from Second Grave on the Left and Charley is feeling the betrayal deeply. In both situations, Charley would have liked to have been told she was being used as bait. Based on her prior decisions, I don't think she would have minded so much. Charley is now suffering from PTSD. I do wish some of this was explained better as Charley's neck was broken in book 1 and she healed quite quickly, but a few cut tendons (from the description of events) at the hands of Earl Walker and she's in the hospital for weeks. I wish we were give a more detailed explanation. Also, Reyes makes the comment in this book that he didn't really think Walker would come after her, but that's not consistent with what he tells her from the previous book where he knew Walker would come but he had expected to be there to intercept him when he did. Not huge things, but little inconsistencies that bug me.

Reyes was released from prison because the man he was accused of murdering proved himself to be alive when he tortured Charley. So now he's a free man. Yet he hasn't even seen Charley for two months. Reyes is in a position of knowledge and this is one of those situations where he rarely tells Charley what she could really stand to know. He does finally have a moment of opening up to Charley, but these two always seem to be moving forward and apart constantly. It drives me mad in the right kind of way. And I will say that these two made progress in the relationship and appear to be headed in a good direction, but knowing them it would easily swing in the other direction at any moment.

The war that has been hinted at seems to have kicked up a notch. Demons are now possessing people and Reyes it's trying to systematically hunt them down to keep them from getting to Charley. Charley makes one step forward in finding out what she's capable of as far as her abilities go, but we've yet to see how this will affect her mentally, especially considering she has PTSD.

Despite her father's attempts to get her out of the PI business, Charley takes a new case which actually does her good in getting her to take the first steps in her healing and at least leave the house. Again this is one place where Darynda Jones lets me guess correctly on the twists. She does a great job of letting me think I'm figuring things out while completely surprising me in other areas.

I do kind of wish that Charley had done more of the therapy work that Gemma suggested for her like writing the letters. Perhaps this will play a role in future books.

Favorite quotes:
-"They're liars, Dutch. Each and every one. They would lie when the truth would sound better."

I devoured Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet. I couldn't put it down. I mean truly I've read the first four books in this series within two weeks which for me lately is unheard of. I like the direction we're headed. I don't know if I'll read all twelve books in a row or if I'll need a break... Right now I'm picking up book 5 next. Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet gets 4 stars. Have you read Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet? What did you think? Let me know!

I love the humour. It's constantly making me laugh. And as a concept it's great - something completely original and fresh. I am more and more intrigued by the characters.

I love this series about a quirky grim reaper working as a private investigator and helping the dead cross over. There is a whole quirky group of characters in this series that I just love. I highly recommend the audio version of the book as well, as Lorelie King does an excellent job bringing the characters to life. This one was fun as usual, with a twist I did not see coming. I highly recommend to readers of the Stephanie Plum series.

Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet by Darynda Jones is a 2012 St. Martin's Press publication.

“I meant to behave.
There were just too many options.

Time to check in with Charley Davidson again after a brief hiatus.

After surviving yet another series of traumatic events, Charley becomes reclusive, spending all her days maxing out her credit cards watching the home shopping channel.

Cookie finally steps in and takes matters in hand, and before long Charley has a new case to solve.

This time a troubled young woman is convinced someone is trying to kill her. Soon, Charley suspects her new client is holding the key to the mystery inside her own head, in the form of repressed memories.

Meanwhile, Charley and her father continue their feud and Reyes can’t leave Charley alone. However, he offers her a few more clues about her many powers and abilities, as their relationship deepens on an emotional level.

I decided to give this series one more shot after book three, which almost put me off the series entirely, because Reyes’ behavior towards Charley made me squirm.

I’m glad I decided to give the series a second chance though- although I think it works out better if I space the books out, instead of reading them too close together.

The humor is top notch, and the series is certainly outside the box, but the stories also drain my emotions.

This installment follows the same format as the first three books in the series. It is action-packed, with big emotional wallops, and laugh out loud dialogue. There is, of course, a very compelling mystery to solve, as well.

However, Reyes’ is much better behaved in this installment and his and Charley’s relationship shifted significantly, although Reyes is still too prideful at times.

Not only that, this chapter also showed some maturity and growth instead of relying too heavily on the action and sexual tension.

Now I am excited again about this series and am looking forward to meeting up with Charley again in the future- just not the immediate future.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but I enjoyed reading this. An interesting story with fun characters. Well written.

Charley has a bit of a love/hate following, and I really do think it takes a few books before you can properly decide which camp you are in.
I think I'm in the love her one.
She is snarky and has a razor wit, but is fiercely loyal and dedicated to her friends and family which is probably the best part of these books.
The relationship angle is my least favourite part of the series, and if that was a little more subtle I would probably enjoy this more. But I'm sure there are plenty of people who are into the whole fate-love-at-first-sight thing.
I was given the first four books from the publisher and NetGalley (thank you) in exchange for an honest review and now I am keen to go ahead and jump into the 5th.
This book finally gave us some answers (maybe?) around her and Reyes' background that should make for an interesting storyline moving forward.

This book is part of a paranormal detective series. It is fast moving, comical and definitely keeps your interest. Everyone should have a guardian angel of sorts

Fourth Grave beneath my feet by Darynda Jones.
Sometimes being the grim reaper really is, well, grim. And since Charley’s last case went so awry, she has taken a couple of months off to wallow in the wonders of self-pity. But when a woman shows up on her doorstep convinced someone is trying to kill her, Charley has to force herself to rise above...or at least get dressed. It becomes clear something is amiss when everyone the woman knows swears she’s insane. But the more they refute the woman’s story, the more Charley believes it.
Wow. Another fantastic read. I love this series. I love Charlie character. She always finds trouble. I'm looking forward to the next book. 5*. Highly recommended.
