Fast paced. YA romance between an 18 year old siren and a 19 year old FBI agent. Set in 1920's.

The writing is sometimes grammatically sloppy. The scenes are set with too many sensory details. The reader does not need that much input to get an idea of what situation the characters are in. Also, some details of the story just didn't make sense; for example, the siren is describes as not talking much, yet from the first chapter on she talks, sometimes even a lot.

I fell headfirst in love with Lindsey Duga's writing in Kiss of the Royal, and this did not disappoint. It got off to a bit of a slow start, but if there's one thing I know, it's that I love Duga's imagination. The magic is just *chef's kiss*.

Eris works in a speakeasy The Blind Dragon in Boston in the 1920s as a singer because it’s only when she sings that she can express everything and be herself! Colt Clemmons is working in the Special Organised Crime Division looking for and dispatching mo ayers in the guise of humans. He’s looking for the one and only Siren and when he gets a tip that one of the employees at a speakeasy might be the one he’s looking for!
What follows is a chase that takes you through the best and worst of the roaring 20s and some really magical creatures, crime lords and ladies that you wouldn’t want to mess with and an empire which is at stake! My fav part about the story is the overall smooth running yet fast paced plot and the character building of Eris and Colt! Their love story is super sweet yet filled with heart breaking moments! Colt is all passion and fire and Eris is deep like the ocean but capable of being tranquil or stirring up a storm when needed! When these two personalities clash it is a match made in heaven!!

This isn’t a bad concept for a fantasy book, but it’s kind of a kitchen sink of monster/magical creature themes without much regard for whether they truly fit together well or not, and all the virtuousness and weird religious stuff really started to bug me. It’s not uncommon or necessarily bad to see religious themes in fantasy books, but this felt a lot like agenda pushing and seems like it should have been labeled as Christian fantasy. I’ll be honest: This kind of stuff, when it’s slipped into a novel without warning, is kind of infuriating.

This might be ok for a certain type of reader, but definitely not for me.

I really enjoyed reading this book! I was initially afraid I wouldn't, especially when the first page was a list of terms but I got through it all pretty quickly. Really enjoyed the characters but especially the idea of monsters in our contemporary world and the making monsters (and that it was partially set in Chicago!). I was a bit disappointed with the villain once he was revealed though. He just had such...typical aspirations and was just...meh.

I really enjoyed this introduction into this world and I just couldn’t get enough of it. I just so thoroughly enjoyed meeting these new characters and getting to go on their journey. I will most definitely be reading more wonderful books from this author.

Roaring by Lindsey Duga is a historical young adult fantasy standalone read. The story is set in the 1920s which were of course known as the roaring twenties. This one is about a siren which one would think water setting but instead it takes readers to the big city in a time of gangsters and speakeasies.

Eris is the last of the sirens but she isn’t aware of that fact as she works in a speakeasy waiting on customers. While Eris doesn’t know exactly what she is she does know that her voice has powers making someone do as she says so she just doesn’t use her voice. Eris remembers a time she was on the run with the owner of the speakeasy and now thinks of her as sort of a mother so she doesn’t want anything to jeopardize them.

Colt Clemmons is an agent in the Bureau of Investigation and is the only one left that would not be affected by a sirens voice. Colt takes his job of chasing monsters seriously so when one night the last siren does use her voice Colt is immediately on the chase. After catching up with Eris though Colt begins to see that the world around him isn’t so black and white as he thought it to be.

I have to say I don’t know if I’ve ever come across another young adult fantasy taking place in this time period so sitting down with this one that alone won some points in the creativity department. It took a little time to warm up to the characters and story for me but once involved in their world I really liked it. There ended up being so much more going on in the story other than what I expected so that was a nice surprise to go along with the romance between the hunter and his hunted. I shouldn’t have been surprised with liking this one though having read the author before and I will certainly be interested in reading her work again in the future.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

I have never read a book like this before. I have never read a book featuring a siren or how mythical monsters are being created.
I loved how it was set in the 1920s, I really enjoyed the slang from that period.
I really liked the characters in this book, although I was afraid for a moment that I was not going to be able to get over how Colt deceived Eris in the beginning.
I really liked that fact that this story showed that just because they was given something to make them a "monster" that did not have to define them as a bad person.

A really good book though it was slow paced in my opinion. Still very interesting and well executed though!! Overall, solid 3 star read. Though I did get bored during reading it during some points.

I don’t like to read books with sea creature but surprisingly this book wasn’t set in the sea and I loved the Siren *Irony*. This book is set in the 1920s and the world-building was so beautiful. It took me only 10 pages to found myself in that world. Gang wars, speakeasies, gentlemen in hats and ladies in dresses. I just loved the vibes.

This world is full of monsters. All the characters are some greek mythological creature in the disguise of human, Minotaur to Manticore, Siren to Basilisk, You’ll find all. It was fun to guess who is whom.

“The law didn’t seem to exist for the ones that enforced it.”

One more interesting thing was the vocabulary. Three pages of 1920s terminology were included at the start of the book. It took me some time to get these after that it was fun and It added new flavour in the story.

Wow! It was a story like none Ive read before. Honestly I thought that it was going to be another romance cliche but this one was full of fun moments, adventure, thrilling scenes, loved it. I adored that the author added what some slangs meant, that really helped an added an extra special detail to the book.

I failed to connect with this story from the beginning. I just couldn't get into it. The cover is stunning and the premise is so interesting, the story just didn't hold my attention.

I tried very hard to read Roaring as the premise intrigued me, but ultimately I dnf'd it about 52 pages in which is very unusual for me as I almost never dnf a book but instead read it to the end. Why I didn't like it was that I felt like I could see where it was going and I didn't feel like I could slog through a romance I didn't appreciate with a love interest who I didn't like, just to end up somewhere I didn't want to. I didn't feel up to reading a story where a character makes several bad decisions, but is rewarded at the end for "learning from their mistakes" Though, I did like the siren, and I have since read about Lindsay Duga's other novels and I am quite curious about those.

I finished this book. This was not a five star read for me. I loved the idea of the 20s and the fantasy aspect but the romance just fell short for me. I really enjoy this author I have read her before and I will continue to give her a chance. Not every book is for everyone!

This was so fantastic! Swoon worthy romance and kick butt characters I couldn't put this one down! If you love romance, fantasy, and paranormal stories then this one is for you! This was a killer combo of a story!

I adore Lindsey Duga's style of writing. I'm not gonna lie. It takes a little bit to get sucked in but once I'm in, I'm in!

It's a slow burn, utterly adorkable pair of kids in the Roaring '20s which hits different now, that we are dealing with: Prohibition, pandemics, and monsters. Ya know the normal stuff. Eris and Colt have the chemistry from the get go and the epic journey they go on just brings them closer. The characterization was amazing.

Colt finding happiness and Eris finding her voice. The fantasy aspect just ramps it up a notch. On the whole, the book was well paced and completely interesting in every single way. I was just having a hard time getting into it at first.

But the settings were vivid and the feelings and emotions were jumping off the page. Her style of writing brings you to a brand new, yet all at once, familiar world.

4/5 stars

Mobsters and monsters set in the 20's? Yes please! I really liked Eris and Colt's story from the beginning. It was an action packed adventure with an urban fantasy flapper era feel. I loved the added list in the beginning explaining a bit of lingo and common sayings from the past. As much as I love historical fiction, some of the phrases were new to me and I enjoyed learning about them! It definitely helped set the mood and time period. The story itself was really a monster hunting, on the run journey with Eris, a siren, and Colt, a monster hunting agent. I liked seeing how these two characters went from enemies to friends to possibly more along the way. The chemistry between Colt and Eris was very well done and had a good slow burn feel to it, but without any steamy scenes. The only thing I would say could have made it better was even more information or backstory on Colt. The story spent so much time on Eris and her identity, background, and escape from enemies that I felt it could've used a bit more from Colt's side to balance it out. Overall, this was a very good YA story and quick read that was filled with action, adventure, monsters and a bit of romance! I can easily see myself picking this one up again in the future.
