Some truly fantastic art, mired with bad writing and duff jokes. The book tries to marry horror with an 80s sense of humour, that feels outdated and naff.

Moon Lake is a conglomerate of campy, horror, 80's themed stories. The artwork is well done and the stories themselves are creative. However, this was not for me. I found some of the font annoying to read, the stories were a bit too oversexualized for me, and there is an element of grossness that I didn't like. That being said I can definitely see that this would have an audience with others, just not me.

This is a horror anthology centering around a cursed area called Moon Lake.

With a Crypt Creeper like narrator called “Man in the Moon,” these stories are chock full of gore but not so much with the horror. I almost feel bad comparing it to Takes from the Crypt because while the campy nostalgia of that show is a reflection of it’s time and kinda predictable in a way, this collection is trying WAY too hard. It keeps reaching to appeal to the ‘farts are funny’ crowd and as that is not me, I was mostly bored and just flipping through the pages. I can’t give this a 1 out of 5 because clear effort went into the art. I’ll be generous and give this a 2 out of 5 because the last story in the collection saved me from complete boredom.

Tries to straddle the line between horror and humor, but the horror is pretty tame (or is just graphic violence without any chills) and the humor is pretty juvenile. I like that each story had a different artist and style, and I like the attempts to play with tropes, but when you have a short volume and a lot of stories there's not a lot of room, so most of the stories seem cramped or superficial. And the frame story....it's not really transgressive. It's just dumb and crude.

I just wanted to thank Netgalley and Dan Fogler for letting me read this graphic novel and reviewing it!

I just wanted to start off by saying I am a Horror/ Thriller lover, and I enjoy a really good scare! I also enjoy a graphic novel because of the art and the ideas behind it. I will say is that this graphic novel kind of fell short for me honestly. I was never pushed over in my seat for the scare factor and I was never in it for the jokes. I am down for a super cheesy joke and sometime immature. But these were meh! All in all it is not a horrible novel but there could be room for improvement and more!

Maybe, Dan Fogler's lunacy is finally rubbing off on me because I find this fascinating and funny. At first, I was struggling to make sense of it all. Annoying, actually! But then Desensitized Deirdre happened and it's all hello dark humor, satire and movie references. As I've said before, it will all come together in the end.

Meanwhile, lemme just flex this for your guidance:
"The Moon Lake universe reflects where we are as a species today and our relationship with nature. We're at our own crossroads where everywhere you look it seems as though evil is winning."

P.S.: I seriously wonder if watching those weird shows as a kid contributed to my appreciation of this comics. I can't wait for the succeeding issues!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Diamond Book Distributors for providing this ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.

Horror is meant to push you out of your comfort zone. It's meant to be creepy and unsettling and often toes the line between exhilaration and plain fear. Sometimes horror skirts too close to your own fears; I will never forget the scene in The Basement where Cayleb Long's Craig is forced to swallow his own teeth.

So it's not the discomfort and sheer inappropriateness of Dan Fogler's Moon Lake that offended me, it just wasn't very good. It reminded me of a subpar Mad magazine issue but whereas I subscribed to Mad for many years and am a big fan of Dan Fogler's, this just isn't very good.

I get the feeling a lot of people are buoyed by Dan's increasing popularity (or have been drinking the same Kool Aid as him) but this should not be receiving a reissue with a brand new cover.

I give it two out of five stars because some of the artwork is good but if you're a fan of Dan-and-horror, I'd recommend just viewing his The Walking Dead episodes again.

Unable to download before archived as my tablet was damaged and I had been unable to afford a new one until recently. Apologies.

I really don’t like to give books bad reviews.... but this one wasn’t for me. The jokes were gross and unfunny, it used the R slur, which I also didn’t like, the language was too foul. Didn’t finish.

Moon lake is a graphic novel that tell us some stories about strange things that happened in a town with the name of "Moon Lake" and it was all narrated by a man who lived in the moon with some extraterrestrial life.

The graphic part was really cool, it wasn't a problem, and on every story were different.

The plot was interesting but some of the stories I didn't like and the narrator was so awful I didn't like him.

I couldn't find a way to enjoy some of the stories that were so hard to get, like the first one of the camp on Moon lake. It didn't make any sense how to put the first part of the story with the second and they barely explained us what was happening, instead of that they wanted to show us the sexual escene between two of the characters than explain why or what was happening, and that was only for the first story.
so I'll just give it a poor 2 of 5 stars.

thanks Netgalley for this ARC,

This graphic novel is a collection of stories all based around the evil originating at Moon Lake. As with any collection, there are hits and misses, but I’m sad to say there are more misses than hits here. Tied together by our host, a very obese and flatulent Man in the Moon with an affinity for Moon Cheese. If violence and nudity offend your delicate nature, this book is certainly not for you. One big gripe is that the cover artwork really drew me in, but inside none of the artwork really matched up to the feel of the cover.

The introduction and interstitials are bright and funny, though by the end they get rather repetitive. There are a couple pages of classic style advertisements tossed in which are creative and funny. The highlight of the stories to me was Desensitized Deirdre, with a nice balance of the cutesy and the gross, with a rather decent story to tell. Camp Sasquatch had a classic comic style of art and a bit of an outlandish but fun story, with a camp full of horny counselors reminiscent of films from the 1980's. I didn’t love the art in Cave Girl, as it just wasn’t the usual bright & cartoony style I prefer, but the story brought the feeling of ancient lore to the collection. Miserable Me is the backstory of the Man in the Moon, our host/narrator, with the fun art, but again, since we get him here and between each story, he got to be a bit much.

The other stories were pretty light on plot. Black bear Blues was drawn well, but almost too short to get anywhere, which is the similar fate of Moon Wars. The art here was much more photo-realistic, almost like they added an effect to photos or film shots to create the story. His Final Escape felt very Victorian, the type of story you’d read in a penny pamphlet with art that would be right at home in some pastoral novel from 1870. It was an average story all around.

My least favorite part was the ending, The Moon Lake Scrolls. Presented like the notebook of some historian researching Moon Lake’s horrific history, it was too wordy for this outlet, especially with the overwhelming amount of boobs & violence we had up to this point. It is presented as an issue of National Geographic and it just felt out of place compared to the rest of the book. If more books in the series are released, I would be interested in checking them out to see how they compare, but I'd probably borrow it from a library.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy to review. This is my honest review of the book.

I wanted to love this but I just was not a fan of the story. The artwork was beautiful and I loved that, but the story itself just didn’t pull me in and it just didn’t feel like my kind of story. 3 stars for the artwork, but eh.

I picked up this book because of the cover and its attachment to Dan Fogler's name, Fantastic Beasts's Jacob Kowalski. Moon lake is a horror story anthology which centers around, you guessed it, Moon lake! Even though I knew this was horror, I was not expecting it to be so gory and vulgar (possibly because Fantastic Beasts is mentioned in the blurb). I enjoyed the different art styles but could not get into the stories because some were too disturbing for me. It's not bad but I guess it is just not my cup of tea!

This ARC was provided by NetGalley in exchange of an honest review.

This was WILD! Over all I enjoyed it. Do I think this is for everyone? No. For me it was a nice mix of horror comedy. I liked some of the stories more than others and there were a couple stories I really didn't care for. It is by all means not a serious collection of stories. Every story had amazing artwork. Every story was over the top and out there. There was serious gore in some of the stories. Ultimately this is a parody collection. There is a lot of nudity and mature content in it. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, but I would recommend it to friends of mine that I know would be into the content

Terrible, just terrible. This is apparently meant to be a fun parody of stuff like Tales From the Crypt or Alfred Hitchcock Presents, but the stories are just plain dumb and the stuff tying it all together (a farting moon man? what the what?) is even worse. I can't imagine how this ever got made in the first place.

I love the cover. Without a doubt, it was Moon Lake's cover that attracted me first.

As I turn the first few pages, I was a little surprised by the style of the illustrations. I think I was expecting a darker and more macabre style, but illustrations were reminiscent of the 70s. Don't get me wrong! They are beautiful and inviting. Then I noticed that there were more than one illustrators. The book was divided into many short stories. And as I turned the pages I understood that it was designed in a way that reflected the spirit of a 60-70s TV show, like the Twilight Zone.

The common point between the stories that have different writers and illustrators is that they all happen around the Moon Lake. The humor, the stories and the illustrations were hit and miss for me. Some good ones such as His Final Escape and some not so good. All in all, I didn't enjoy the book as much as I thought I would.

And, as usual, the Adobe Digital Editions reading experience is very poor.

An odd collection of stories centered around Moon Lake.

There was one, maybe one and half, stories in here that I liked. Overall it was pretty bad. So immature it could have been written by a 12 year old. Look, I love sasquatchs, were bears, zombies, and gore, but there are only so many fart and sex jokes I can take...
