Musings:

This comic was really cute. It had beautiful art work and a sad and blooming story and I wanted to know more after it ended.

What I loved:

Victor. He reminds me so much of my boyfriend while also being completely different. The intelligence. The want for a future that is totally different from the way things are now. The want to be right and the way Victor cares for Nora. It endeared me to Victor because of those qualities that feel familiar to me. Even while understanding there’s many things that made him flawed. He felt real and three dimensional and I loved that.

Nora. She was super sweet and full of life. That’s the biggest thread in this story. Nora is dealing with an unimaginable fate. Death in her face every single day. She continually chooses to cling to life and I loved to see it.

The clear DC elements. This felt like a clear DC story. Victor being so deeply focused in science and Nora with her illness giving her episodes that are purely fantastical. It made for a really fun read!

All in all:

I really loved this comic. I don’t want to spoil any of it. It’s really beautifully done and at times humorous and heartfelt. It’s very much worth the read.

I received an eARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I thought the story was good, very cute/romantic. However, considering it is a Gotham story, I kind of expected there to be some superhero element to the story. The scientific discovery is awesome, but I still wanted more. The way it ended leaves it open to many possibilities though, so perhaps in the continuation of their story I will get the satisfaction I am looking for. Otherwise, it was definitely a good teen romance book, placed in a well-known and beloved city.

When I read that this was a Gotham love story I was picturing more superheroes and less dying heroines. But that is what this is. Nora is dying from an incurable Disease. Victor is a scientist working on safe freezing technology. This story is lovely and the colors the illustrator used give it a dream-like romantic quality that I just loved. But the story feels half finished. I felt the same way with Catwoman. The author leaves you wanting more, but the next book has nothing to do with the one before it.

This story is a fun prequel to the DC villain Mr. Freeze's story, to a time when he was still Victor and falling in love with his beloved Nora. The two characters are quite well-developed with distinctive personalities. This helps carry the story forward since this is not your typical "comic book" story. For fans of comics and romance novels, this is the perfect marriage of the two genres. The illustrations were effective and helped to visualize the story well.

Mr. Freeze has always been one of my favorite DC villains (he is always the one I could empathize with most). Fighting for love always seems more valiant than fighting for money (even if the two for him kind of went hand in hand sometimes). The art style was beautiful and the story compelling. I have mostly just seen the Batman movies. I read some DC comics from time to time, so the only time I got to hear about Victor and Nora's story before now was whenever he was the villain in a movie. This story allowed me to see where it all began for him. Before Victor was a villain, he was just a boy with a tragic back story in love. The characters were fun and easy to empathize with. Honestly, a captivating read that teens will enjoy!

The art in Victor and Nora made this nice story a superb one! I loved the short bits where the art style changed completely, though the main style was lovely (especially Nora's hair!). I'm sure most patrons don't know Dr. Freeze's backstory and the audience this is for may not even realize that Victor is set to become Dr. Freeze. Either way, a fabulous work. Highly suggested for high school audiences!

The art is good and coloration effects are very nicely done, but as a retelling of a Gotham villain's origin story it doesn't really add anything to it by setting it against the character's teen years. Nora's manic pixy girl routine is kind of over the top, and it's not the greatest conservation on mental health, even for a villain origin.

I really enjoyed this! I think this is what the DC Ink line should be, telling stories of characters that aren't as well known. It was creative and didn't lean too heavily into anything DC based, and could honestly have stood alone without needing the DC universe.

I thought this was a pretty good take on Victor and Nora for a modern audience. I could tell that Victor has the potential to turn into a supervillain, but the story is actually pretty focused on Nora and how she's coping with her illness. It's easy to see why they fell for each other and how the idea of losing her would drive him to desperate actions. The art is very lovely as well! The colors were used effectively to show shifts in the story's tone. Also, this is just a general note about the DC Ink and DC Zoom books, but I think it's awesome that some of the characters are being reintroduced in a more diverse way, i.e. being people of color or queer.

I loved this story. It was a great addition to learn more about gotham and the people of that city.

This is one DC villain origin story that you don't want to miss. DC villains have always been misunderstood in my book. They all have the most fascinating origin stories and their character arcs are always super complex and compelling. Victor and Nora: A Gotham Love Story by Lauren Myracle did not disappoint me: the characters were complex, the love story tragic and the plot contained the perfect turning point into darkness and madness for Victor. The novel ends at a crossroads for Victor... and we can fill in the blanks to how he turns into one of the DC legendary villains. The art work is beautiful and storyline is beautifully tragic. This is the first graphic novel I have read about a supervillain and I enjoyed every page of it.

What makes this graphic novel stand out? The tragic love story is nothing new; indeed, the ironic literary allusions to Romeo and Juliet and Titanic made me chuckle. The tormented scientist playing with life and death is nothing new either. There's literary allusions to Frankenstein (the book nerd in me was happy). For the book nerds out there, the raven will make you think of Poe and make your telltale heart happy. The tragic end of Nora... well, we all know Nora is Victor's obsession and true love. So... that leaves the art and the twist in the usual narrative. The art is stunning. Blues are used for Victor and pinks are used for Nora; when they are together, shades of purples mingle together. The chapter headlines are adorable: the boy.../the girl... pay attention to the colors. They tell their own story.

Grab a comfy blanket and a cup of tea. Settle down for this frosty love story. Your heart will melt for Victor and Nora.

This is another great addition to the DC Ink line up.

Victor is a 17 year old scientist who is still reeling from the death of his brother. Nora is an almost 17 year old who is trying to live her best life while living with a deadly disease. When the two meet, sparks fly, but there love story is bound to be short lived. This is a great Mr. Freeze origin story that really breathes humanity into the character. The interplay of different art styles also helped to better illustrate Nora and Victor's points of view. Myracle once again shows that she has the chops to write compelling supervillains, as did in Catwoman: Under the Moon. For fans and newcomers alike, this is a great new twist on a classic villain origin story.

I absolutely love the direction DC is going in with the YA graphic novels! Mr. Freeze was always my least favorite villain, but man, this gave it a whole new light! I loved the art, backstory, symbolism, all of it. This will definitely be popular with fans of Kami Garcia's work!

This reminded me of A Walk To Remember except the boyfriend was a scientist and used his knowledge to try and help her from dying. I liked it well enough. There were a lot of cute funny parts. The characters seemed real and were likeable but were still flawed. When I started I didn't know who in Gotham this was about but when I read on I made the connection, Doctor Freeze. This title was quite short and could be used as a book club book because there's some versatile talking points of family, friendship, love, illness, and ethics involved.

Lauren Myracle is a treasure, and this story is one more jewel in her vault. It is a teenage love story, deeper than is really possible for people with a lifetime of learning ahead of them. These teens don't have that. What they have instead is a broad perspective on life borne of a tragic past and razor-sharp focus on what's most important.
