1920s New York was still with very strict rules in place for well to do girls. They could go to college but they were expected to conform to their families traditional way of life.

Two young women boarded together one studying music, the other architecture happy as room mates both enjoying a bit of freedom away from the strict attitudes of well connected and rich families.

Till one goes missing, then winds up dead. Taking the investigaiton over is Nathaniel Walker, a gentleman investigator for whom private detective work is a passion and something which someone of his wealth will not pursue normally.
Painstakingly going over the background and the last few days of this young woman's life he uncovers a whole lot of information which will be very unpalatable to her highly conservative family. From accidentally brushing up against the mob and a moll from the mob, to playing in a speakeasy Nathaniel uncovers a whole plot which ended in a tragic death.

Very descriptive of the Jazz Era in New York city, this was an entertaining read.

this was a great mystery the characters were great and I really enjoyed trying to figure out what was happening in the mystery. I liked the use of prohibition and the Jazz Age.

This book looked really interesting to me, as I thought that the focus would be on mobs, their women and jazz. However, the book just drug along and focused too much on the daily domestic life of the Walker home.

Sarah is a brilliant piano player. Sometimes there is not enough time allotted at school for her to practice. Thus she will play at a speakeasy to practice. When Sarah is found murdered with a knife. Many people seem to be guilty. It is left up to James Nathaniel Walker to help solve the crime. Mr. Walker was in the Great War. Because of this he has become agoraphobic. He has his devoted employees to help as well as a mobster's moll.
An intriguing investigation of a murdered girl from a prestigious family.
Very well written great characters.

While I enjoyed the time period (who doesn't love a story set in the roaring 20's) I just felt bored by the story. I kept putting the book down and had a hard time picking it back up. I needed to know what happened so I was determined to finish it. Thank you Netgalley for chance to read this book.

While I read to the very end, this book wasn't what I expected. The blurb talks of 2 roomates joyous freedom, of being in New York away from well to do parents in the time of speakeasies, mobsters and their molls and jazz. And to live that life through this book excited me.

But in reality the book is told by the private and confirdential assistant to James Nathaniel Walker, who is trying to solve the murder mystery. Alot of the the time we are hanging our coats and talking of the domestic life of the Walker household.

I felt undersold and a little disappointed but persisted til the end to solve the murder of one of the room mates.
Thank you to NetGalley for the chance to read this book and best wishes to the author M C Karpin.
