Jeffrey Deaver has brought back the old suspense / mystery magazine format that used to be so readily available at newsstands and bookstores. Didn’t even know I missed it until reading through these excellent stories. They are guaranteed to surprise and thrill. The theme is as the title states - Nothing Good Happens After Midnight and many of the authors even worked this statement into their stories.

Favorites were the ones that either brought me to a place where danger lurked or seemed somewhat benign at first. In “Night Shift,” the few souls working the late shift in a newsroom are not really expecting anything earth shattering to occur…..but then everything changes with a perceived threat. “Midnight in the Garden of Death” starts out in a bad place. A teen hosts a scary nighttime party for friends in the cemetery bordering her home….they should get out! “The Sixth Decoy” is a police procedural with an intriguing detective who is a former marine and fisherman when not taking cases. The Nantucket setting of the mystery makes this one a winner. In “Tonight is the Night,” a ski resort maintenance man is out in a raging Maine snowstorm. His thoughts are on the gal he wants to propose to, but a killer with his own agenda is also on the loose. In “ATM” a young man who cruises NYC streets and bars for hookups and money, visits an unusual ATM that gives him more than his money. And the rest to the stories will sure to be favorites of other readers. Highly recommended and a great way to learn about other authors to pursue. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing this title to review.

Nothing Good Happens After Midnight is a short story collection edited by Jeffery Deaver. As the title suggests, all of the stories revolve around events that happen after midnight. This is a great collection of authors and stories. Some names are readily recognizable while others may be new to many readers. It begins with a killer awaiting execution on death row and ends with a kid trying to find answers in a phone booth.

One thing I like about short story collections is that you can try out some authors - sort of take them for a test drive. One of my favorites is Tonight is the Night by Shannon Kirk - an author new to me.

Mystery/thriller lovers will really enjoy these short stories.Great collection from Suspense Publishing

Very nice mix of short stories. I have to say I enjoyed them all. The stories are not so long that you could not read one during lunch, etc. I hope the author will present a 2nd book and/or make it a series. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the arc of this book in return for my review. Receiving the book in this manner had no bearing on this review.

First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Jeffrey Deaver (editor), and Suspense Publishing for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.

I have always found that you can discover the true mettle of an author by how well they can handle writing with strict parameters. Jeffrey Deaver tosses the challenge out to twelve other authors (as well as himself) to pen a short story apiece with a ‘late’ or ‘midnight’ theme. Each entry in this collection differs greatly from one another, with a stellar collection of published authors offering something for the reader to enjoy. A great collection of pieces that read with ease, perfect for those who are familiar with the authors or enjoy something a little shorter.
There is such a great cross-section of ideas in this collection that each reader will surely find something to their liking. Some will likely flock to Alan Jacobson’s piece about a death row inmate who may have some key information about a copycat. Others will enjoy Kevin O’Brien’s recounting of a man who hates technology, while still others may find the antics of Linwood Barclay’s piece about a graveyard shift at a newspaper something that tickles their fancy. Each piece is unique and entertaining in its own way and Deaver ensures there is no repetition at all. Quick reads on their own or a decent binge of shorter writing for those who wish to indulge. Whatever your fancy, watch out, as you’ll surely be sucked in, much like some of the characters in Deaver’s own entry in this collection.

The short story allows little time for character development, even if it is an offshoot of a series some will know well. Jeffrey Deaver does well at finding some wonderful contributors whose styles and abilities are surely second to none. Each story contains some strong characters, a few who are part of a larger series, others dreamt up for their debut in these pages. At approximately the same length, each story used plots and developments effectively, though uniquely, begging the reader to choose some of their favourites. With some strong writing overall, this is a collection not to be missed and I would love to see more of this in the future, as I know Jeffrey Deaver has created some wonderful and witty writing projects for many in the genre before.

Kudos, Mr. Deaver and your twelve other contributors, for a great collection of stories that really get to the heart of the midnight hour.

A ride through avenues of darkness powered by masters of crime fiction.

Perfect for fans of Alfred Hitchcock, Night Gallery, NCIS, Criminal Minds, and James Patterson.

A haunting melody that continues playing long after the curtain closes, a phone call that could be all that stands in the way between a mass murderer and innocent victims, a grewsome idea for bringing home the bacon, an overhead conversation on a train....a perfect, satisfying variety.

Thank you NetGalley and Suspense Publishing for my digital advance copy of this wonderful anthology.

A great collection of short stories involving all sorts of characters, some are hillarious, in crimes that end after midnight. It´s really easy to read because the stories are obviously not linked to one another and you can stop reading after a short while if you need to - although it´s difficult because they keep you hooked till the last one! Loved it!

Thank you Netgalley forf the opportunity to preview Nothing Good Happens after Midnight. This is a series of short stories by several well known authors.
I am not a huge fan of short stories but have enjoyed Stephen King's short novellas and have read a few others.
This is a mix - some i liked better than others - but all in all, a fun and quick read. Good for bus rides and quick reads at lunch time.
3 stars.

This is a darn good collection of short stories on the theme of nothing good happens after midnight. Actually, in the last story, "ATM", good things do happen after midnight. The other stories involve various crimes, criminals, and law officers. I'd only read Jeffery Deaver before, so this was a nice introduction to the other writers. An enjoyable gathering of stories for the crime reader!

Stellar Storytelling.....
Stellar storytelling from a stellar line up of authors in this anthology of thirteen shorts exploring the mystery of midnight from a number of genre perspectives. Enjoyable reading across the board and thoroughly entertaining. A worthy read.

I like mysteries and crime stories in any format - full-length novels, novellas, and short stories, so this book caught my eye. The benefit of an anthology like this is the chance to read a variety of authors all in one book. This collection has thirteen short stories with the common theme of “midnight”. I was introduced to some new authors and also was able to experience some familiar authors in a new way.

All of the stories in the collection are well-written, but a couple are too dark for my taste. Some of my favorites are by authors whose novels I really enjoy. Jeffery Deaver’s “A Creative Defense” is clever and creepy, and Linwood Barclay’s “Night Shift” has a twist ending I didn’t see coming. I’ve read cozy mysteries by Jon Land but his story, “ATM” showcases his writing in a whole new way. Another of my favorite stories in the collection is by an author I hadn’t read before. “The Sixth Decoy” by Paul Kemprecos is about a part-time private investigator who ends up in danger after taking on an eccentric wealthy client. There is something for all mystery lovers in this well-rounded collection. The title is clever and the stories are well-written and entertaining.

I received this ebook from NetGalley through the courtesy of Suspense Publishing. An advance copy was provided to me at no cost, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.

This is a collection of short stories. As such there are several authors which makes the review a little more challenging.
I can only give this 3 stars as it’s based on my opinion. That being said I have determined that short stories are not for me. I like to develop a rapport with the characters and that development was missing.
Some of the stories were very well done in such a short period of time and I wish those had been longer. A couple i really disliked and found lacking.
If short stories are for you, or you like to read in small bits and blurbs you will probably really enjoy this book.

I always find short stories a good way to find new authors and this collection is no exception. Lots of really good things centred around the theme nothing good happens after midnight. My favourite one was called The Cell, about a man who invents a device that gives the phone user a shock when they are using there phone rudely.......like talking loudly when in a confined space, or using the phone in the toilet. Great stuff.

Wonderful collection of suspense stories.

The stories fit the theme of Nothing good happens after Midnight.

As a reader of many mystery novels, I got an introduction to new authors whose stories I had never read before. And I read stories by some of my favorite authors, who wrote in a different genre from their usual genre.

The stories are as dark as expected.

Recommended for Halloween Reading.

And I received a free digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

Thirteen stories by widely known writers with the theme of midnight. The genre falls more into crime fiction than horror. With thirteen different authors, there are jarringly widely diverse styles. Not all the stories were great, but all were readable. The standouts included "12:01 a.m." By Alan Jacobson, a serial killer at midnight, "Cellphone Intolerant" by Kevin O' Brien, which draws a direct link between technological progress, magic, and anger, and ATM" by Jon Land, which crosses grittiness with redemption.

Nothing Good Happens After Midnight is a compilation of thirteen short stories by thirteen different authors. All the stories are tied together by the theme that nothing good happens after midnight, hence the title. However, each of the stories are completely different, and even vary in the time they are set in.

This is a hard book for me to rate and review as I liked some stories better than others and for different reasons. Some ended abruptly, some were odd, some were really good, and others tied up nicely in the end. However, I would say that overall the book worked well. I was only familiar with one of the authors and the story they submitted is not their normal style. Some of the other authors have me intrigued and I might be seeking out more of their works. Thank you #NetGalley for allowing me to give my honest opinion on #NothingGoodHappensAfterMidnight.

When NetGalley posted "Nothing Good Happens After Midnight", I knew I had to grab it because the authors are all so great. I had read most of the authors before and the new to me authors were just as wonderful.
The short stories all happen around midnight and they are quick, captivating and interesting reads. I went from one story to the next without slowing down. If you enjoy short stories, new authors and new writing from some old favorites, this is the book for you. I loved it and have already gone back and read it a second time.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for a fair review.
