This a series a head above the rest. I love how each new addition adds a little something to the character, and inches the narrative along. Like a good TV show. It doesn't just stand alone. I like the back story to Evan's life and would like to see additional appearances from his brother. And that cliffhanger. What a blast!

Prodigal Son by Gregg Hurwitz is the sixth book in his Orphan X series.

Evan Smoak, aka Orphan X, aka The Nowhere Man is back in his latest adventure. He’s gotten the call and is off to save the day.

Gregg Hurwitz adds another exciting thriller to this series. He expertly maintains the series continuity while making this installment a successful standalone. Characterization remains my favorite element of this book and the series. The characters, both new and recurring, are well-conceived and well-developed. The plot is complex and compelling, with hair-raising twists and fast-paced action. The ending is surprising, but leaves open the option for additional installments to the series. Prodigal Son is a 5 out of 5 star read, and I highly recommend it to all readers who enjoy action-packed thrillers.

My thanks to St. Martin’s Press, Minotaur Books, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However, the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.

One of my favorite series, Orphan X (Evan Smoak)! Action, witty dialogue, suspense make for a great read. A white knuckle read that will keep you interested. Never make it personal, until Evan gets a call from a woman he didn’t think existed.

I have been reading the Orphan X series since the first book came out and although there is a lot of violence, there is a humanity story below it. In #6, Evan Smoake, aka The Nowhere Man, aka Orphan X is trying to start a new life. He has promised the president that he will retire from The Nowhere Man persona in exchange for an unofficial presidential pardon. He really means it, until he gets a call from someone claiming to be his mother. Not only is that unbelievable to him, but the person she wants him to help is her other son, his half brother. Andrew Duran was in the wrong place at the wrong time, bringing him to the deadly attention of very powerful figures. He is now being hunted by a merciless brother/sister team of mercenaries. Who is behind this team? Can Evan and his computer genius "foster daughter" get to the bottom of the plot and not only save Andrew, but keep Evan alive as well.

This is an exciting, action packed series and this book is non-stop. We see a very human side to Evan in this book as it has become very personal. Not only does he meet his mother for the first time he can remember, but he finds out about his half-brother. He also becomes quite invested in Joey's life when she begins dating someone Evan is not impressed with. This story takes up into cyber technology that goes beyond anything the military expected and when a whistle blower is ready to speak up he gets killed. Now Evan, with Joey's hacker skills is in, and needs to escape with his life. Of course it seems like all is well and everyone safe, until the explosive ending. Once again, Gregg Hurwitz has written a story that had me on the edge of my seat, nails digging into my palms as I read the Nowhere Man's adventure. I definitely recommend this one to those who enjoy adventure, espionage type stories, but remember, there is a lot of violence along the way.

It took me far too long to read this great new entry in the Orphan X series. As always, plenty of thrills and chills. Fantastic action scenes. And, Evan Smoak aka Orphan X aka The Nowhere Man, continues to grow as a character. In this one, we find him receiving a call from a woman claiming to be his mother. Intrigued, he flies out to meet her and that decision will start a cataclysmic series of events that will once again put his life in danger. Hurwitz fuels this adrenaline-tinged tale with tender asides and unexpectedly breathtaking moments of humanity. I'm stoked for the next in the series, DARK HORSE, and thrilled to learn he has signed on for three more books in the series. Highly recommended!

It's on me that I couldn't rate this book higher; I received and ARC of this book, not realizing at the time it was part 6 of a series. This book was good, I really liked the writing style, the characters (what I was able to learn about them anyway) and the pace of the book were all terrific. It's just the entire time I could tell I was missing something. So take this review with a grain of salt and use it to start the series with Orphan X like I'm going to. I do think based on this book that the whole series is probably great so I'm going to start at the beginning.

This is a complex story of a son,a mom and the foster care system that this boy grew up in. I read half way through but I just couldn't get through the whole book.. Received from Net Gallery and it was emotional but kinda far fetched where one minute in foster care them trained as a killer and then the mom shows up needs help... I really tried just couldn't hold my interest...this is a series, the 6th book, didnt know when I started..

As the Nowhere Man, he helps those that can not help themselves. Then a person comes into his life that he never expected to, his mother. Can he help the man she needs to help?

This was another hit from Hurwitz!!

The sixth book in this exciting, action packed series. We learn a bit more about Evan's early life and how he eventually became Orphan X. The author always does a great job of filling in Evan's back story for those who haven't read the series (I highly recommend reading them in order though).

Ready for the next installment!!

Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy.

Thank you to NetGalley and publisher for my review copy for my honest opinion.

Prodigal Son is book 6 in the Orphan X series. As this was my first book by this author, I had no idea this was a series. Knowing this now, I don't feel like I really missed out on too much. The author did an amazing job of being able to read this as a standalone. I did go out out and buy the rest of the series.

Evan Smoak, is given a once in a lifetime offer. Go straight and leave behind "The Nowhere Man" and be forgiven all your crimes. As a do-gooder assassin, living a normal life seems impossible. Then he gets a disturbing phone call, that has him taking on one last case, all while facing childhood memories.

Prodigal Son is an action packed, adrenaline coursing story. It never lets up, even when it dwells into Evan's childhood. I can not wait for the next installment.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. the action begins on page 3 and it is non-stop throughout the book. Vey well scripted and I particularly liked the ending.

Forced into retirement, Evan Smoak gets an urgent request for help from someone he didn't even suspect existed―in Prodigal Son, the next New York Times bestselling Orphan X book from Gregg Hurwitz.

As a boy, Evan Smoak was pulled out of a foster home and trained in an off-the-books operation known as the Orphan Program. He was a government assassin, perhaps the best, known to a few insiders as Orphan X. He eventually broke with the Program and adopted a new name―The Nowhere Man―and a new mission, helping the most desperate in their times of trouble. But the highest power in the country has made him a tempting offer―in exchange for an unofficial pardon, he must stop his clandestine activities as The Nowhere Man. Now Evan has to do the one thing he’s least equipped to do―live a normal life.

But then he gets a call for help from the one person he never expected. A woman claiming to have given him up for adoption, a woman he never knew―his mother. Her unlikely request: help Andrew Duran―a man whose life has gone off the rails, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, bringing him to the deadly attention of very powerful figures. Now a brutal brother & sister assassination team are after him and with no one to turn to, and no safe place to hide, Evan is Duran’s only option. But when the hidden cabal catches on to what Evan is doing, everything he’s fought for is on the line―including his own life.

Some people spend their whole lives working toward retirement—dreaming of the day when they no longer have to get up and go to work—only to discover that life with no schedule and nothing to do can be surprisingly boring. That’s definitely the case for the man formerly known as The Nowhere Man in Prodigal Son, the sixth Orphan X novel by author Gregg Hurwitz...

Prodigal Son by Gregg Hurwitz

Release Date: January 26, 2021

Fiction (Adult), Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, Action, Adventure, Espionage, Secret Agents

Evan Smaok is an orphan. Not just that he doesn’t have any parents, he is an agent in the government Orphan program. He has been pardoned by the President as long as he stays retired. He receives a cryptic telephone call from Argentina from a woman claiming to be his long-lost mother. She wants him to help Andrew Duran, a man that saw something he wasn’t supposed to see.

This is the sixth book in the Orphan X series. Evan reminds me of a combination of the Jason Bourne and James Bond rolled into one. He is a man that just wants a quiet normal life but because of his work, he may never obtain it. The book is fast paced, full of action, and shoot outs. The characters are well developed, and it is written in the third person point of view. There are also flashbacks from Evan’s childhood. I highly recommend this series and look forward to the next installment.

Evan had just gotten out of being a bad guy and was getting back to some normalcy when he gets a shocking call that he never thought he would get. How can Evan say no to helping this person out now.

When Evan finds out who is after this caller he never thought he would hear from, he knows that he has to try and help. I don't want to give away any spoilers because this book is action packed and it is best read as it goes along instead of maybe know what some of the unexpected's are going to be.

There is a lot of backstory about Evan and we learn how he became the person that he was. From The Pride House Group Home to the occupation that he had for years, there is a lot to learn about Evan.

This book ends in a cliffhanger so if you are not fond of waiting very long for the next book, just be aware of that. I thought that this book was very well written and kept you on the edge of your seat throughout the whole story. I can't wait for the next installment of the Orphan X series.

I voluntarily read and reviewed this book for an unbiased review. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for a copy of this book.

Absolutely FANTASTIC! I freaking love Evan Smoak and his adventures. He’s retired from being the Nowhere Man but he can’t really relax without a mission.

Loved this book, great twists, secrets and suspense. Evan Smoak, foster kid turned government assassin is one bad ass character. His entanglement with a woman who claims to be his biological mother leads you on a crazy ride filled with equally crazy characters and tons of action. Definitely want to read more in this series.
Thank you St Martins Press for allowing me to read this book.
