This is a story I haven't seen before, which is unusual. While the ending isn't exactly happy (losing a parent to addiction never is either) it's an ending that could help a child come to terms with a difficult experience. I would definitely recommend this book for a child who has lost a parent to addiction, or even who has temporarily lost a parent due to incarceration.
