Lots of twists and turns to keep you flipping pages. Loved the secret society angle and the addition of many notable historical figures. A very enjoyable and uplifting read.

All Through the Night takes you into the heart of the War Between States. Washington is in turmoil because war had been declared with the intention to free the slaves. As a doctor, Joshua is in the midst of it, as an abolitionist--even more so.

Cadence, on the other hand, longs for purpose. When she gets the chance to serve as a nurse, she's ecstatic though the job is nothing like she expected.

The romance between Cadence and Joshua unfolded slowly over weeks of them working together and getting little insights into the other person's life. They made each other better and their relationship was fun to read.

This story explored some hard topics exposing the nefarious practices of those who benefited from the slave trade and didn't want it to be abolished. It also showed the people who worked to free the slaves sometimes fighting against their own ethnicity.

Through it all, the reader is reminded that we were all created by the same Creator who loves us with an everlasting love. We are never alone as God is no more than a prayer away.

Oh my goodness, if this book wasn't a masterpiece! This was my first time reading a book by Tara Johnson (although I have her others now shouting at me even louder from my bookshelf). Once I picked this one up, it was nearly impossible to set down until I'd finished the entire novel. Drawing on all five senses, Tara Johnson created a world you can't help but be enraptured in, experiencing the story as if you're a character yourself. The energy and mood of each scene was made tangible through the imagery and description weaved in through the narrative. The battle scenes were brought to life through the nauseating aromas of the warfront and the cries from the operating table. The author didn't shy away from the horrors of war. There were definitely some scenes that were on the graphic side, however it was intentional to show that the warfront was a terrifying place not for the faint of heart. It made the obstacles that the characters faced seemed ever more real and deepened the readers' appreciation for their heroism. When I closed this book I was left in a very real book fog, not ready to let the characters go. I'm SO glad I picked up this read, and can't wait to read more from this author in the future!

This was the first of Tara Johnson’s books I’ve read, but it won’t be the last! I can be a little picky when it comes to historical fiction, but this book had just the right balance of an intriguing storyline, historical detail, and engaging characters. I enjoyed the unique historical aspects, with a focus on the brave doctors and nurses who served the Union during the Civil War, both in Washington DC and on the battlefield. The added elements of Joshua's clandestine work were fascinating from a historical perspective, and made the book hard to put down!

I loved Cadence and Joshua as characters and thought they complemented each other very well, even though they got off to a rocky start! They brought out the best in each other, helped each other grow, and accomplished so much more together than they could have on their own. This multifaceted story even had some suspense mixed in that led to some tense moments at the end! This book is a must-read for fans of historical fiction, especially from the Civil War era.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I went in with high expectations for this book, as I’d heard only good things so far from other readers. Well, my expectations were exceeded. This was an excellent book and I really mean it. It was deep in so many ways. Tara Johnson puts her readers in the midst of the civil war. As you read page after page you can see it and feel it. It takes a good author to make readers feel as though they are in the midst of their story. Faith was approached boldly which I so appreciate. It really hits home in a truly touching way. The characters were superbly written and I enjoyed getting to know them as I worked my way through the novel. The plot had plenty of twists and turns which left me reading late into the night. I can’t recommend this book enough. This is a must read. I’ve since added all of Tara Johnson’s other books to my TBR list.

I wish I could give All Through the Night six stars, it is just that good. Johnson's books are so well written that you become so invested in the book that you find yourself reading way past bedtime and up early in the morning just to see what happens next.

All Through the Night takes us into Washington DC when the Civil Rights War was underway. You get to follow the path of a young nurse and a young doctor who have a huge heart and want to serve others. Both characters in this book feel as if they have something to prove. One to a father who misunderstands her, and one to a doctor who knows what it is like to live among the streets. When the two come together, they make a great team and before they know it, they are in love. All Through the Night does a great job of taking you among the streets where slaves were horribly sold and makes you feel the joy of a young child who is finally free. I don't want to say too much so that I won't spoil it for others, but this is a must read book. All of Johnson's books are but this one is terrific. Her God given talent shines through.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

I am enthralled by Tara Johnson’s writing style in this civil war novel following characters that one would not commonly expect to be the hero and heroine.

Cadence Piper grabbed my attention right away, she had been through so much yet she wasn’t down about it or whiny about her past, she was sweet, and wanted to serve others. As I read I found more behind her pretty voice than a pretty face of a girl who was looking for love in the wrong places.

Joshua Ivy is a somewhat gruff character that nearly put me off at the start until I got to know a little bit about him. And, I find after reading the last page that he is a character I love, and his secrets weren’t hidden just to be kept but to protect, and I appreciate that the secrets were not what I expected.

The backdrop of battles, wounded, and the soldiers that the characters saw gave just the right setting to give All Through the Night a well-paced story while not being too slow in the calmer parts of the novel.

With intriguing secrets, frightening experiences, and dodging the steps of the people who would have them stopped this wartime romance is one I look forward to rereading again and again.

As this is my first read from Tara Johnson I was not sure what to expect and I am so very pleased with how much I loved the story.

Another jewel from consummate storyteller Tara Johnson!
This beautiful story touched me to the depths of my heart and soul on multiple levels—emotionally, sensorily, cognitively, and spiritually! Ms. Johnson has a gift for connecting you to the story in such a way that you feel like you are experiencing it in real life. The prose is fluent, clear, and effective with vivid descriptions and imagery that transport you to the scene. The well-crafted characters primary and secondary are endearing and memorable. The captivating plot moves at a steady pace twisting and turning with a few surprises along the way. The sweet romance is heart-warming and special. The strong faith element incorporated as a natural part of the characters’ lives expounds the truth of God’s unconditional love and care. The historical aspect of the story is amazing. The real-life characters are seamlessly meshed with the fictional ones. I especially enjoyed Candace’s encounter with Fanny Crosby which so wonderfully captured the essence of Miss Crosby’s personality. Also, I love how the significance of the power of music is woven throughout the story. This book is now at the top of my “favorite books I have read this year” list, and I highly recommend it!

I received a complimentary copy of this book but am under no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Tara Johnson has done it again and penned an emotionally gripping and uplifting Civil War tale in her latest title, All Through the Night. This page-turning gem has all the ingredients for a fantastic reading experience: historical detail, drama, suspense, love, and an uplifting inspirational message with the potential to bring tears to your eyes. Cadence Piper developed a stutter in her childhood, the ramifications of a doctor’s diagnosis leaving a scar on her psyche and a desire to prove her worth. Dr. Joshua Ivy’s difficult life as an orphaned child became a driving force in his quest to improve the lot of those with similar experiences. The chemistry between these two was palpable and the dialogue engrossing and inspirational: “For the first time I realized that just because people had told me all my life I was worthless didn’t mean it was true. Jesus died for me, and that made me priceless.”

In addition to the captivating storyline, the various secondary characters added a rich background tapestry to the novel, including Joshua’s friends, Maisey and Moxley, the hospital staff, Cadence’s brother, as well as the lovable children. I highly recommend getting yourself a copy of All Through the Night! The hero and heroine, heart wrenching and suspenseful plot, swoon-worthy romance and incredibly uplifting spiritual message make for a riveting and compelling book you will not be able to put down. This is a book that will leave you better off for having read it!

A moving Civil War drama rich in history and inspiration! A well developed plotline with some intrigue, danger, and action kept the story moving along at a steady pace. It felt quite authentic as real people and events from the early Civil War years are included along the way. The author reveals in the interesting end notes that she has also loosely based the main character's profile on a real person who really did sing to soldiers and worked as a nurse during the war.

Perils of war, medical traumas, and difficult issues surrounding slavery made it a bit gritty at times, but added to the authenticity. The author does a good job of adding just enough detail to keep it real. I admire the grit and determination of both Cadence and Joshua as they put themselves in danger to help others. Their relationship was dynamic and grew into something solid. The romance was beautiful and tender. I like the faith moments that shaped them both as they struggled against negative voices from their pasts, and helped them grow stronger. We all probably have things that we need to let go of that weigh us down that way, and need reminders that "there is a God who sees and hears us, even in the darkest night."
Highly recommend for older teens and up who enjoy a story set in real history with grit, faith and romance.

With compelling dialog and sweeping imagery, Johnson transports readers into the early days of the Civil War. Dr. Joshua Ivy treats patients at the Judiciary Square Hospital and is taking on an important mission that can put him in danger at any moment. Cadence Piper wants nothing more than to become a nurse. Longing to fit in, she overcomes other people's perceptions by providing support in unconventional ways. Both Cadence and Joshua stumble upon secrets and evils that stand to put everything on the line, including their deepening feelings for one another. Richly researched, Johnson crafts a solid, unforgettable historical fiction featuring famous figures, expressions of faith and determination, and the pursuit of purpose and calling at any cost

With her stammering tongue and quiet ways, Cadence Piper has always struggled to be accepted. After the death of her mother, Cadence sets her heart on becoming a nurse, both to erase the stain her brother has left on the family’s honor and to find long-sought approval in the eyes of her father. When Dorothea Dix turns her away due to her young age and pretty face, Cadence finds another way to serve . . . singing to the soldiers in Judiciary Square Hospital. Only one stubborn doctor stands in her way.

Joshua Ivy is an intense man with a compassionate heart for the hurting and downtrodden. The one thing he can’t have is an idealistic woman destroying the plans he’s so carefully laid. When the chaos of war thrusts Cadence into the middle of his clandestine activities, he must decide if the lives at stake, and his own heart, are worth the risk of letting Cadence inside.

Everything changes when Joshua and Cadence unearth the workings of a secret society so vile, the course of their lives, and the war, could be altered forever. If they fight an enemy they cannot see, will the One who sees all show them the way in the darkest night?

This book was received as an ARC from Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

I absolutely loved this book and it was not what I was expecting from reading the description and looking at the cover. I was expecting a thriller but I got a romantic love story with some historical references which was even better. I loved the determination Cadence showed throughout the book even when she met Josh who kept pushing her away and discouraging her from being accepted and achieving her dream. Then on the other hand is Josh who has been hurt so many times has trouble realizing what is ahead of them if it's not his patients and the wounded soldiers. Then sparks fly and chaos erupts and this story just got a whole lot more interesting. So many unexpected turns that I could not stop reading. I know our community will enjoy this book.

We will consider adding this title to our Christian Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

All Through The Night by Tara Johnson is absolutely beautiful. I couldn't put it down. This book is set during the early years of the civil war. It is filled with history that revealed some of the awfulness of the war and the secret societies that existed then. There is suspense and my favorite part...love! Love for all people and also swoon worthy romantic love between the hero and heroine.

Sleep my child and peace attend thee,
All through the night
Guardian angels God will send thee,
All through the night
Soft the drowsy hours are creeping,
Hill and dale in slumber sleeping
I my loved ones' watch am keeping,
All through the night
These lyrics weave their way through this book in telling the story of the early days of the Civil War. Cadence Piper and Joshua Ivy are two very relatable characters who populate this plot. Joshua is a doctor at the Judiciary Square Hospital in Washington DC. Dorothea Dix is the head of nursing supplying nurses to the hospital and she has a prejudice against young, pretty, unmarried women as nurses and turns Cadence away. Cadence has a stutter and a singing voice that mesmerizes everyone around her, but her desire is to work as a nurse in the hospital.

Joshua has secrets that he has kept from his staff and from those around him. He is an abolitionist who frequents the slave market to buy and free slaves. He also provides a way north so that they will not be brought back into slavery.

Both Joshua and Cadence need approval, but they look for the approval from all the wrong places. In finding the right approval through God, they are free to work and to will their lives accordingly.

Cadence and Joshua cross paths several times in the early pages of this book: first, when Cadence encounters a small child crying in an alleyway. She sings a song to the child and gives her a memento to give her comfort. About this time, Joshua shows up to take the girl home. This seemingly meaningless encounter plays a significant part later on in the story.

This is one of the most interesting historical books about the Civil War that I've ever read. Tara Johnson uses historical figures in cameos throughout the book: Dorothea Dix, Fannie Crosby, Abraham Lincoln; and they only add to the story. Her research into the era, the people, and the times is impeccable. This is a five-star book, with two thumbs up, and a hairpin memento.

ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT by TARA JOHNSON is an American Civil War drama which takes place in 1861 and 1862 and in which the author deals with the horrors of war and slavery. We come across slave traders and abolitionists, dedicated doctors and nurses, corrupt government officials, and the traitorous Knights of the Golden Circle, a brutal secret society.
Dr Joshua Ivy is a dedicated doctor and abolitionist. He is driven and takes his work amongst the wounded and destitute very seriously. He first sees the beautiful Cadence Piper as she ministers to injured soldiers in song, seeing her a a socialite who is looking for attention. He finds out how wrong he is when she assists him in the operating theatre. She has a beautiful singing voice but sometimes stutters when she speaks.
Both Cadence and Joshua suffer from derogatory things people have said about them when they were young, which they believed. This drives them mercilessly until they each recognize their worth in Christ. Cadence, who is afraid of being rejected is described as "Terrified of being noticed while yearning to be seen, truly seen and loved, despite her flaws." Two more quotes that appeal to me, the first from Fanny Crosby when she was encouraging Cadence are, "Just do the next thing" and "Love the broken. Give Water to the thirsty. Feed the hungry."
I really enjoyed "All Through The Night" for the great story, which had me in tears at times, wonderful characters, and the really good Christian message. It is a worthwhile read and I cannot recommend the book highly enough for everyone who enjoys historical romance novels.
