I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

This is such a funny and bright picture book for children with a fantastic message - always be yourself.

Milly really wants to go to unicorn school and disguises herself as a unicorn to fit in but Milly is in for a surprise when she goes on her first day.

We loved this book and had such a giggle when reading it - this would be a fantastic book to share with a class too.

The only reason I marked it down to 4 stars is because the ending confused me as to why the school name was changed - it would have been more understanding for children if the animals would have papered something over the original name of the school so visually they could understand it.

Very cute story with beautiful bright illustrations and a good message. I was a bit disappointed in the ending however and thought it needed something more. My kids were confused as to why the 'unicorn school' name was changed and why there was not one unicorn in the story. Overall it is a good read with a great message.
My thanks to the publisher for an advanced copy.

Millie is really excited to go to unicorn school...and nervous because she’s actually a donkey in a party hat! At first I wasn’t really excited about the fact she fibbed on her unicorn school application. I didn’t want to have to explain to my daughter and young storytime patrons not to do that. As I read on I realized the other animals were doing the same thing and the bigger message is acceptance one another for who they are. I’m not sure how it went from being a “unicorn school“ to a school for “all animals”. Maybe Im taking it too literally. It was a cute story and lovely, bright illustrations.

milly is about to start unicorn school. She is excited, but also worried- she didn't want anyone to discover she is really a donkey! This book is absolutely adorable. It's a great story and has gorgeous illustrations. I'm positive this will be a favorite of many.

This books is so adorable. The pictures are really cute and colorful. And the plot was really funny. It was one of those rare children's book that would appeal to both children and the adults who are reading the book to them!

My daughter loves unicorns and we found this book so much fun. The first thing she noticed was that there was no horn on the donkey. She loved pointing out what each animal was. It was so much fun to read with her. This book was great.

Milly is starting unicorn school and is nervous, but excited. There is just one problem: she is a donkey. After she arrives she notices that the other “students” are all special in their own ways.
A short, simple book to share with young children just starting the school year. Bright, colorful pictures that will keep them engaged in the story. Perfect to start a discussion about what makes each child special.
Thank you to NetGalley and Jess Hernandez for an early copy of this e-book.

Adorable book! My unicorn loving daughter giggled all throughout this story. We loved the humor & the different animals. I would’ve liked a little more info on the unicorn school with mismatched applicants (but that Is just my adult perspective). The illustrations were very cute. Great little bedtime story or beginning of school book!

Unicorns are all the rage right now! So I know my students will eat this book right up. The First Day of Unicorn School tells the story of Milly, a donkey who longs to be a unicorn. So she fakes it until she makes it! But when she finally arrives, she notices something a little off about all the other unicorns at the school...

Milky, who is a donkey, starts unicorn school and is full of worry due to the fact that she isn’t a unicorn. She feels terrible while she is there and believes she shouldn’t have perused her dream. She soon realise however that other animals are also concealing something and they too share similar feelings. A lovely, bright book to explore with children the complexities of school life and peers.

A deliriously colourful, but very intelligently put together, look at a sort of modern Ugly Duckling variant. Milly our heroine wants so much to get into the Unicorn School, despite not being a Unicorn, and perhaps not having any of the qualities needed to be one. But you know what, she'll find out on her very first morning that a humble donkey can fit in, and that she's not alone in being determined enough to fake it to make it. The immediacy of the artwork in all its detail is matched by the simple portrayal of the story about acceptance, you're-not-aloneness, we're-all-in-this-togetherness, and suchlike. A strong four stars.
