I was granted a copy of this book by Netgalley, in exchange for my honest opinion.
I don’t know anything about the original tale of Wuthering Heights, but reading this retelling, was very enjoyable, at least for a retelling lover.
The narrative style felt a little too young, it seemed directed towards teens. Half of the book occurs when the characters are young, leading to a long throw their growth, but the development of the plot was slow at times. I found the book to be a bit repetitive as the characters didn't evolve until the very end of the novel. I liked this book, but I felt that it could have been better done, overall I liked the concept and to see Scottish mythology, it definitely encouraged me to read the original story.

it just wasn`t for me, it was very boring and just overall ..meh? I thought it was going to be epic, romantic and cute..but again..meh.

I was excited to read this because it was a retelling of Wuthering Heights, one of my favorite classic novels. However, this was a loosely based retelling and was not faithful to the original. It was also slower moving. Still, it was a good try. It’s just hard to pull off the original novel.

Wuthering Heights is one of my favorite books in life, so when I saw this book was a retelling I was very intrigued to read it. The language is a bit simple but it was fast paced to read. This wasn't a retelling super close to the original one, but the story was still engaging. I did really love the mythology created by the author and all that surrounds it.

*Read the arc from Netgalley*
While I haven't read the original tale of Wuthering Heights, I did like reading this retelling. One thing I didn't like was how young the narration style seemed for something marketed towards teens. 40% of the book occurs when the characters are tweens, leading to a long buildup that didn't match what was expected. I found the lore of the Dwellers to be repetitive as the characters didn't learn any new information until the very end of the novel. I liked the concept of this book, but I felt that it could have been better executed, especially for its target audience.

"Something inside her fractured, and she was not a strong little girl anymore but a broken bird with hollow bones." K C Lannon, Tempest Cursed.

I'm squeezing in a final review for my last title finished in 2020.

Tempest Cursed is a story inspired by Wuthering Heights. It has magic and old, forgotten sea gods. It has curses and dysfunction, but is not quite as dark in tone as the original tale can be.

The story plays with fairytale elements, as the stories surrounding the sea gods clashes with the reality of the beings.

While Wuthering Heights is a tragedy, this story is more a romance. We follow the two main characters from childhood into their late teens.

The story has some beautiful imagery and descriptions and thought provoking explorations of friendship and family. Give it a read!

I really enjoyed this book! The plot and characters were both quite engaging. I loved that it was clean- no language or anything beyond a few kisses. It told a story over a period of time and it was interesting to watch the characters develop and grow. It was a bit slow at times, perhaps due to the nature of the large period of time covered, though not nearly as much as the original Wuthering Heights. Also, the ending felt a bit rushed. However, I really enjoyed the book overall.

Wuthering Heights was one of my favorite romantic novels/classics and when I saw that this book is a retelling fantasy version, I knew I had to read it.

Tempest Cursed is a young adult fantasy book with Scottish mythology. I have to say I didn’t know a lot about it therefore this novel was a very pleasant read. The relationship between Pearl and Hake is really well written and the way how Hake’s nature was it reminded me life isn’t easy.

I would personally say that Tempest Cursed is more inspired by than actual retelling.
Did I enjoy it? Yes.
Did I love it? No.

Tempest Cursed had a wonderful blend of Wuthering Heights and the selki myth. The beginning of the story started rather slowly, but it gave readers a necessary insight into how the two children meet and how their friendship developed when they were younger. The pace picked up a lot once the children were older. This story had a great blend of folklore, mystery, and suspense. Fans of Wuthering Heights will love this imaginative retelling.

I received a copy of the book from Netgalley to review. Thank you for the opportunity.
A great read with plenty of gothic atmospheric writing. The writing is good and the plot is OK as it is based on Wuthering Heights but I think the authors own additions were pretty good too
I look forward to this authors next book.

I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Wuthering Heights is not one of my favorite stories, but if you add in Deep Dwellers and selkie type creatures, like K.C Lannon did, then it turns out to be a pretty good book! I do wish there had been more history about the Deep Dwellers though instead of tantalizing hints here and there.

The chapters switch between the views of Pearl and Hake. I must admit I preferred reading from Hake's point of view because Pearl (to me) was really annoying at times with her switching back and forth with liking Hake or thinking he is a monster.

The ending got really exciting and made up for the slow parts earlier in the book. I think the ending tied everything up nicely and made it worth it to read this book.

The plot was good only it's a little bit tad slower, with many intricate words that confused me. But I'm pretty sure readers who love gothic will love reading this book as well despite the slow burn read. I couldn't touch on the retelling part since I have yet to read Wuthering Height.

A huge thanks to the author and NetGalley for this e-arc in return for an honest review.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and Netgalley for this ecopy in exchange for an honest review.

This description of this book is what drew me in. Gods. Check. Cults. Check. Selkies. Check. Wuthering Heights retelling. Count me in. This book really drew me in. The setting in this novel was phenomenally written and made you feel as if you were there. You definitely get alot of Gothic seashore vibes. This novel definitely was its own book and not one of a million retellings that are out there. Does it follow the basic plot as Wuthering Heights? Yes but it is definitely its own story and written in a different style. I loved how we got to see Hake and Pearl grow up together and enjoyed the 2nd half of the book more because they were more relatable. The only thing I didn't enjoy about the book was how the plot moved slowly at times. There were some parts that were repetitive and it ended up slowing the book down instead of adding to it.

- plot, setting and writing -

Before I get into the actual review I must say that Wuthering Heights is my all time favorite classic book and I feel deeply attached to it, so I had high expectations for “Tempest Cursed”.
As soon as I’ve read that “Tempest Cursed” is a retelling of my dearest Wuthering Heights I knew that I had to request the ARC and I was so happy to have chance to put my hands on it.
Now, sadly I didn’t recall many similarities to the original novel; Tempest Cursed has a somewhat original plot and is surely well written, but saying that it is a Wuthering Heights retelling is an overstatement.
The plot was good, yes, but still not really entertaining and kind of confusing, this is really strange because I like the prose but it was still a perplex to me.
I tried so hard to like it.

- characters -

The characters were one of the most confusing part of the novel.

- final thoughts -

I see the idea behind the story, but it probably should have been put in a different way.
Not one of my favorite “retelling”.

2.5 stars

I have to admit that I was very intrigued by the idea of a Wuthering Heights retelling. I've always thought Bronte's book needed a little more magic in it and so with that in mind, I started Tempest Cursed.

I did get that extra hit of magic with the curse on Moon Tithe and the prevailing threat of the Deep Dwellers, which I absolutely appreciated. Unfortunately, the rest of the book got too bogged down for me. It tries to keep the epic romance of Cathy and Heathcliff alive, but the fact that an additional plot had been added left both the romance and magic portions of the book rather underdeveloped. By the time the major conflict came in at around page 145, I was already not invested.

I think that this was a really good effort to update a somewhat problematic classic that was ultimately not for me. I know that there are others out there who will love this and to them I say, read on!

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review!

This story is divided into two sections. The first section takes place around pre-teen years (10-11) while the second section takes place during mid-teenage years (15-16). I have to say I enjoyed part one more, but part two was also good, just different. More action and less relationship building, which makes sense as the relationships have been formed already, but I always enjoy a good arc. This story had that but not as strong as I would hope. In sum, part one is character driven while part two is plot driven. Both good in different ways.

I love Hake and his wildness. And I love Pearl and her fierceness. All the other characters lacked a deep development. They fit their roles but I would have enjoyed knowing them a bit more.

Overall, the book was done really well. The writing is fantastic despite the minor complaints I had. I recommend for fans of Jane Austen retellings.

Tempest Cursed: A Wuthering Heights Retelling by K.C. Lannon is the first in a two-part young adult fantasy series that completely engaged me and had me rapidly turning pages.

This eerie story takes place on the island of Moon Tithe and Tempest, the home of young Pearl and her father. Pearl is mourning the loss of her mother. Her mother's death is mysterious; it is believed she drowned, although her body has yet to be recovered. Before her passing, Pearl's mother imparted several stories of the Deep Dwellers to her daughter. The Deep Dwellers are sea gods who accept offerings of silver and gold treasures to keep their fury at bay. Holding onto her mother's magical stories of the Deep Dwellers is Pearl's way of coping with her loss. When Pearl herself makes an offering to the sea gods, she comes face to face with Hake, a boy who is half-Deep Dweller. Hake and Pearl form an unexpected friendship, and as they become familiar with one another, it becomes clear to Hake that Pearl's stories of the sea gods are far from accurate. Will Hake show Pearl the terrifying truth of the Deep Dwellers? How will Pearl and Hake's bond evolve over the course of the book? And, perhaps the biggest question of all, is Tempest cursed?

K.C. Lannon has done a stellar job of taking the classic Wuthering Heights and transforming it into a unique Gothic retelling. The descriptive nature of Lannon's writing style flows through the pages, bringing the magic and mystery of Moon Tithe to life. The storyline unfolds from the point of view of both Pearl and Hake, rotating back and forth throughout the book. Each point of view provides the reader with a different perspective surrounding the events that occur. The result is in-depth character development and eagerly anticipating what is to come when the point of view once again changes.

I would highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy young adult fantasy, Gothic storylines, and suspense. It is not necessary to have read Wuthering Heights to enjoy this book, personally, I would say the book is inspired by the classic rather than a retelling. While classified as a young adult fantasy, this book will appeal to adults who appreciate the genre. Readers who are deterred by multiple points of view may wish to preview the book prior to purchase to see if the writing style appeals to them.

The fantasy element combined with suspenseful events was spot on for me. I enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to the second book in the series. There wasn't anything I didn't like about this book. I gladly rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
