Sophie loves books that feature a collection of short biographies on a theme (check out some of her previous posts for proof) and Scientists Who Dared to be Different by Emily Holland provides exactly that. This fully illustrated book includes profiles of sixteen scientists who all faced challenges in their lives but made huge accomplishments regardless.

The challenges faced by the scientists in the book are wide-ranging and include disabilities, religious persecution, and poverty, as well as people who were dismissed because of their gender and race. She was happy to see autistic individuals included along with those with mental health disorders such as schizophrenia. She was also grateful that the book didnโ€™t just stick to the usual few names often included in these types of books but also included many new faces to her such as Susan Laflesche Picotte, Chien-Shiung Wu, and Rita Levi-Montalcini.

Scientists Who Dared to be Different is far from the best one of these biography collections that Sophie has read and could have benefited from a few more people of color among its pages, however, it is still a good introduction to many new faces and will hopefully help to show young readers that they are capable of great accomplishments no matter what challenges they may find themselves facing.

A wonderful art book for kids. It is a collection of scientists who did a lot for the humanity. It describes in detail with associated illustration how a particular scientist stood against all odds to reach the peak of his scientific exploration. A book full of wonderful knowledge and reminds us of eternal heroes of science.

Scientists Who Dared to be Different // by Emily Holland

What a fun book! This very much reminds me of the Rebel Girls books, just without the focus being on just women, and I loved it just as much as those! This book covers 16 courageous and resilient scientists without whom the our understanding of the world would be much different that it is today. Accompanied with great illustrations, we get to learn about their lives and adventures. Some examples are Susan Laflesche, Valentina Tereshkova, Stephen Hawking, Temple Grandin, and Abraham Nemeth. This book would be excellent for your own children, as gifts to other children, or even to just learn some fun facts yourself. It goes into a good amount of detail without going on forever, so it can be used as an early chapter book even by focusing on one person each sitting. Share this book with the little leader in your life!

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Great visuals and anecdotes! I appreciated learning something new. The text was presented in easily digestible segments. I would recommend this text for my middle school science classroom!

I love that this book does not stick to the regular scientists that we have heard of a million times. (although a few of them are in there as well), but gives us ones we might not be familiar with.

Good middle grade book of short bios with images to show the said scientists. I know that at that age I was eating up stories of famous people.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

As a house of scientists, we truly loved sharing this book with our daughter. We loved showing her how important it is to be yourself, and that being different can lead to some of the most important things in history and in your life. In a time where people are afraid to be different, we loved having this book to show Ada that being herself is important and perfect.

Scientists Who Dared To Be Different is a collection of short anecdotes of 15 scientists who changed the world. From Stephen Hawking to Rosalind Franklin it shares with the young audience who they are, and how they influenced science, and people today.โ˜บ๏ธ
ใ€‚
This was fine, and I can for sure see how young people could get a lot out of it, but I did have some annoyance while reading it. My frustration sparked as I was reading about hugely popular scientists such as Albert Eisenstein, or yes, even Stephen Hawking, and even the Italian renaissance man Gaileo Gaile. I feel like if the author maybe narrowed down her number, and really focused in on those scientists, that are not as well known due to their gender, or for someone else taking their credit, by making their segment in the book much longer. It still was a nice quick read, but would have much preferred the element of the โ€˜unknown.โ€™๐Ÿ˜•

Scientists Who Dared to Be Different by Emily Holland is an illustrated nonfiction book that tells the stories of 16 pioneering figures of strikingly different backgrounds. People of varied ethnicity, nationality, gender, lifestyle, and wealth. What they all have in common - other than their genius - is their bravery, their resilience, and their ability to think beyond the bounds of established convention. The scientists talked about include Valentina Tereshkova, the extraordinary first woman in space, Marie Sklodowska Curie, the great pioneer of radioactivity, and first person to win two Nobel prizes. Galileo Galilei, the great physicist who bravely stood by his cosmic theories in the face of the Roman Inquisition. Katherine Johnson, the "human computer" who played a key part in NASA's space program and Stephen Hawking, the world-famous physicist who overcame physical paralysis to transform our understanding of black holes.

Scientists Who Dared to Be Different ๏ปฟis a well rounded collection of ten to fifteen page biographies of these sixteen scientists. I liked that the scientists chosen were a blend of well known individuals and those that do not receive much recognition. The scientists profiled here also have a good deal of variety. They are from different genders, races, background, and so on. Mental health and society obstacles they faced were touched on, and I think the book does a good job of taking these names (both familiar and not) and making the people real and relatable. While those topics can be hard, the author did a good job of keeping the important aspects of these scientist's lives in the narrative while being completely age appropriate and accessible to young readers. The book can be read as a whole, or by taking it a scientist at a time. The illustrations are crisp and add visual interest to the page.

I think this would be a great addition to a school or classroom library, or for a child already interested in science or reading biographical material.

Scientists Who Dared to Be Different is a shortened biography compilation of several well-known scientists. This would be perfect for middle grade students who need to learn about an array of scientists, as the passages about each scientist are relatively brief. Filled with the right mix of information and illustrations to keep younger students read and retaining basic information on each featured scientist.

Emily Holland has created an interesting book based on sixteen notable scientists. Scientists Who Dared to Be Different contains biographical information about significant people such as Marie Curie, Stephen Hawking and Katherine Johnson. There are some pictures within each chapter and a glossary at the end of the book. I would recommend this book for children aged 8 plus and adults. In my opinion, if there had been different features (fact boxes, labelled diagrams for example) it would engage younger readers too. This is an important book to remind and educate the reader about the astounding work and legacy of these amazing people.

This book shares the stories of sixteen different scientists. Beginning with their early lives and describing the discoveries and accomplishments they made to their chosen scientific fields during their careers.

Each scientist had a stunning portrait illustration and there were a few other pictures of significant details which add to the overall appeal of the book without detracting from the information. The scientists included and their achievements are from a range of backgrounds, eras and scientific fields making the book diverse and interesting to read. The background story for each scientist was well researched and detailed providing interesting biographical information in a well organised and accessible way. This is a definitely a book I would recommend to a school, library or classroom.

Extremely biref bios of 16 scientists including some who dared "to be different." Many are well known names and relatable stories of challenges met through persistance. Includes glossary.

A great resource for a somewhat diverse group of scientists throughout time who changed the world. I liked the illustrations and found myself learning things about scientists I thought I knew lots about. my only complaint is that the e-book read kind of weird, I believe it will be fixed in a print version though.

This title features scientists.ย They range from the well-known including Albert Einstein, Galileo Galilei, Mari Curie and Stephen Hawking, among others, to scientists who were knew to me, for example, Mary Anning and Geerat Vermeij.ย There are sixteen biographies in all.

This book has very appealing illustrations and does a good job of telling each scientist's story.ย It deserves a place on children's bookshelves and, hopefully, will inspire them.ย It did me!

Scientists Who Dared to Be Different is the perfect addition to the science classroom. This book in particular is great because it is extremely inclusive. This little book includes both male and female scientists of various ethnicities. "Scientists" is informative without being over complicated for young readers. The chapters are brief but intersting and are paired with illustrations of each scientist.

Overall, I think this is a great and inspiring read to all young scientists in the making.
